Played this over and over on Canberra radio, and still rate it one of the most sublime songs of its decade. Easter has never received 1/10 of the recognition he deserves.
My brother is in the last stage’s of his life. I played this for him because he loved this music and always wondered why it wasn’t mainstream. Great stuff.
When this came out it became for me an anthem for our extended group of HS friends “the ups and downs of 15 people”, “I jump in and hope for everyday”. “When we look back we will never see how lines got crossed”, that song choice was the right one.
Freshman year, Ann Arbor, Little Ways and Badger. My fantastic roommmate from Flint introduced me to them. They opened for REM at the Nectarine. I moved to Chapel Hill four years later but never saw them. Beautiful melodies and timeless beautiful indigenous alternative music. Just effortlessly subversive while humane. I loved a lot of stuff that was not humane as well. But this kept me in equilibrium, saving me for many rainy days.
Came for the song and was delighted to see Pilot Mountain which I've passed many times between Mt Airy and Kernersville on my drive from the Midwest to Raleigh!
So everyone on the Pyloric Waves CD I have from back in the day. ;) One of the many band members was even my roommate for a while. I don't even remember which band, there were so many great ones. But he introduced me to Mitch Easter one night at The Turtle club in Greensboro, and we had a fantastic long conversation.
Remember buying this LP the week it came out I believe, and playing the hell out of it on my reasonably new Sanyo rack system. Kept playing Still Dark Out over and over I recall.
Equally as much as I was about the album, I was about this video too. I hadn't seen it in a loooong time. I was thinking about the band and happened to come here...and WOW...much to my surprise!! FANTASTIC!!
Una de las mejores canciones que he escuchado en mi vida. En Perú, jamas la escucharás en una radio. Verdaderamente una master piece. Mucho talento. Una pena que sea un grupo infravalorado.
Sadly, we lost Sara Romweber this week to brain cancer. For anyone who never got the chance to see her play drums with Mitch and Faye in the original lineup of Let's Active, she was something to behold. This video was filmed in 2014 during the Be Loud! Sophie benefit show at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. Of course, Faye had also passed by this time, but it's the first time Sara played with Mitch since she left the band in '84. That's Suzi Ziegler from Game Theory on bass and Missy Thangs from The Love Language on keys and vocals. Also, Lynn Blakey makes an appearance on vocals. She sang in an incarnation of the band, too. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/A1kji1lj6nk/v-deo.html
I've watched this so many times, but only now noticed that the drummer is playing on logs. (I guess a drum set would've been hard to lug up a mountain.) And I never fully appreciated how heavy, pulverizing, and CAN-esque the drum beat is, nor Mitch's possible Prince homage with his purple accessorizing and fallopian guitar. This goes in a time capsule of the best the '80s had to offer. To those who like this song, I would recommend "Ephemeral (This Is No Heaven)" by The Lucy Show from around this same era.
We're really living Now, the ups and downs Of fifty people Condensed in time Some barbed wire And thrown at my love I need you When we look back We'll never see how lines got crossed Don't think they weren't So wait for me I am waiting for you I stand outside the room Missing is so new Is it warning Could be true Well I jump in and hope For every day I will not disappear In little ways Hey From clear to all outlines To colored in wrong information Every time Another song I've worked up now It all runs down now When we look back We'll never see how lines got crossed Don't think they weren't So wait for me I am waiting for you I jump in And hope for every day We cannot let it go In little ways
Many thanks for posting the lyrics. Mitch had this casual brilliance as a lyricist that is sui generis. Such a unique inner perspective, with language that is conversational yet beautiful.
Never heard of this band before but they’ve got a great sound. Video was shot just north of Winston-Salem, NC around Pilot Mountain. Is this a North Carolina band?
Im sure you've read all about it by now but yes, and lead singer Mitch Easter is also a record producer who did a lot of work with REM, Game Theory, the Connells etc.
probably not, from what I understand this was a one time charity thing, everybody is doing their own thing these days, here's what the N & O said about it: www.newsobserver.com/2014/08/07/4052640/lets-active-reunites-to-play-for.html
At the video's beginning, Mitch is heading north (from Winston-Salem, N.C) towards Pilot Mountain State Park (probably on Highway 52). In the background is the Big Pinnacle of Pilot Mountain. Beautiful views of the Winston-Salem area from here, as well as nearby Hanging Rock State Park.
I could see the mountain out of the sliding glass doors of my apartment deck back then. Also got to see some of the guitars in this video when they were hanging at Sam Moss' shop at 825 Burke St, in Winston. God, what a great time that was to be in that place...
I bought this LP back in 86 and still have it. Great record!!
Played this over and over on Canberra radio, and still rate it one of the most sublime songs of its decade. Easter has never received 1/10 of the recognition he deserves.
It's always slightly chilling when you come to UA-cam and stumble upon something you haven't heard in 20-30 years ... hard to describe the feeling ...
I was thinking the same thing
It feels great

I'm baffled this band never became more popular. Such catchy songs!
I’m 61 and I turned my late older brother on to a lot of alternative music and he would always say “ Why isn’t this music more popular! “ … got me.
@@michaelgreenwood2351 I'm 65. They were my favorite band for 2 or 3 years (after U-2). Then nothing, till Nirvana came along...

What an absolutely perfect song.

OPIE!
Citizen's arrest! Citizen's arrest!
Great road tune for North Carolina natives 👍🏻
Possibly my fave Let's Active tune. Fantastic melody and the production is amazing. More please.
Wow, Mt Pilot....I could see it from many points in Yadkin co , where I grew up. ..and the music is fantastic
Destroyed the front forks of my Schwinn Varsity coming down the switchbacks on that mountain. But hey, this music is indeed cool!
I read recently Robert Plant was a big fan on Let's Active
Two facts:
Life is just so unfair.
Let's Active were/are so awesome!
one of the most un-noticed, underrated artits(s) ever... if you want to make everyone in the room relaxed (esp. your pets! ;)... play this album...
Another reason I can't stop loving everything about Let's Active.
One of North Carolina's finest....Dillion Fence,SuperChunk,Archers of Loaf..and more
Polvo!

Dude, brilliant, don't loose this footage. AWESOME.
Such an amazing song from a fantastic album

My oh my what a talented band led by the legendary Mitch Easter true indie talent indeed
You are a legend for putting this back on UA-cam!
Quintessential Let's Active forever.

This is so 80s take me back

Mitch Easter and the brave bards, 3:18 to the End- piano is powerful and gets us there.
Wow - so happy to see this - thanks for posting!
Pure pop genius
Wow! Had never seen this before. Thanks!
I love this song so much and it’s so upsetting it’s not on Spotify.
I've hiked up that mountain many times
Hope they go on tour soon
We're really living
Now, the ups and downs
Of fifty people
Condensed in time
Some barbed wire
And thrown at my love
I need you
When we look back
We'll never see how lines got crossed
Don't think they weren't
So wait for me
I am waiting for you
I stand outside the room
Missing is so new
Is it warning
Could be true
Well I jump in and hope
For every day
I will not disappear
In little ways
Hey
From clear to all outlines
To colored in wrong information
Every time
Another song
I've worked up now
It all runs down now
When we look back
We'll never see how lines got crossed
Don't think they weren't
So wait for me
I am waiting for you
I jump in
And hope for every day
We cannot let it go
In little ways

@@humboldtgift5128 Well said!
wonderful sound on this track
I'm here because Robert Plant said he liked them. Thanks Rob
I miss those days
Sensacional,Linda,linda!
2024.. October.. time to bring back this energy in.. little...
I loved let's active...I made a video for their song Lowdown a few years back.
It's criminal this song has less than 10,000 listens
No. It's a verdict...if you can accept that verdict over the echo used in this song.
Let's Active reuniting August 9th at Cat's Cradle

Wow...never knew this video existed
I love this song so much. It’s not on Spotify :-(
I love the simplicity and beauty of the footage/concept - and on FILM
Epic piano outro.
Sauertown Mountain, NC, standing on the "whip-it seat"?
Haha I spy Pilot Mountain
Brilliant song from a brilliant
I can see why they're a favorite of Robert Plant.
I think whoever designed the video for Ryan Adams "So Alive" has seen this.
I would have definitely thought they were from Australia, turns out they are from North Carolina.
In the dictionary under most underrated band of all the fucking time
Almost like Mitch is channeling the Three O'Clock here.
does anyone know what happened to Big Plans for Everybody? it just got removed from pretty much everything, just like the dBs' Stands For Decibels
I don't know but I'm equally frustrated. Same thing with The Smithereens' Especially for You too. What's going on?!
It's so stupid. These albums need to be on all the services, racking up millions of listens. Big Plans is timeless.
remember your roots mitch..Moravia!
Watching this for the first time from Northern Moravia, believe it or not!
Will be a great hit once he’s made it through puberty 😉
This was the closing credits song on some movie soundtrack, but i can't remember/figure out which one! Help!
What was the movie?
Sigh!
Such an underrated band, thankfully Mitch Easter and Suzi Ziegler are still active hopefully they can collaborate on something in the future…
The byrds and The church
I Comment - The Byrch indeed
do you think they will do a tour after tonight's reunion?
probably not, from what I understand this was a one time charity thing, everybody is doing their own thing these days, here's what the N & O said about it: www.newsobserver.com/2014/08/07/4052640/lets-active-reunites-to-play-for.html
the News & Observer on the reunion: www.newsobserver.com/2014/08/07/4052640/lets-active-reunites-to-play-for.html
Remember when they invented MTV2 to show videos ! ha...that didn't last long
The area I lived in got it for free to test it. I raced home after school. So good. Sometimes felt like 120 Minutes but for hours.
September 2018???
Does anyone know this is filmed at ?
I'm guessing around where he lived in North Carolina.

Benjamin Duke It's at Pilot Mountain, NC, near Mt. Airy.

Album "doh"
I love you!
Is that Angie Carlson?
Believe so. She's credited on the album.
Not even 500 likes, criminal!
Has it really been 38 years since this album was released? It sure doesn't sound like it.
