The engine is a 78 L Cummins engine with 12 turbos 3500 hp and 10,157 pounds of torque the engines are overhauled in Denver Colorado at the master rebuild center they usually do about 75 engines for the mine a year I work there now and they been a long customer of ours

Mark, there is an old abandoned Kennecott Copper mine in south east Alaska outside of McCarthy. I believe it was abandoned around in the 1920s and a lot of it is still there. Now if you and Sue were to drive up there and record the adventure, I for one would enjoy watching those videos. Yours and Sues' take on the adventure and views of what is going on around you is spot on. I truly enjoy your videos and your sense of humor is outstanding. Rock on and stay safe

I was in the Mining Shovel Development Engineering department at Bucyrus Erie, and the Dragline Development Engineering Department at Harnischfeger. Those were my first two jobs in a 42 year career. Very fond memories indeed. I loved working on the giant, big stuff!
When you see how enormous this "hole" is, but realize operations like this exist all over the globe, you start to get a real feeling about how much man can really change the planet when he or she puts their mind behind it!

The biggest mine in the world is the kennicott copper mine(Bingham canyon mine) in Utah,USA and I live by it. It also has the tallest tower at the kennicott smelter in the u.s. western hemisphere! You can still go to the mines overlook! 100% recommend it is beautiful. Those big huge mine trucks are amazing!
Mark, The small rusty loader on rails you were talking about it still made and used in underground mines around the world. It runs on air and I helped rebuild one in the '70's that was going to South America. I also rebuilt an electric "locomotive" that was used to pull strings of the small ore cars that the loader loaded. jack
Been going to that place since 2005 , hoping this new visitor center is as nice as the last one that got damaged in the slide ! It had some much information, and a theater explains the history. We moved in 2017 so looking forward to our visit back .

My father in law works in the tire shop there. From June to October you can drive up either Butterfield canyon or go around to Tooele and go up middle canyon and there is an overlook on the opposite side of that platform.
I ran one of those shovels and we easily put on over 400 tons. And also a cool side note is that lots of silver and gold come out of there too they are considered by products of the who operation. The Olympic medals are made from the gold and silver that come out of Rio Tinto mines, and also the Super Bowl trophy is made from Rio Tinto silver. Also, Tiffany’s is contracted with Rio Tinto for their silver and gold.
When I working in the engineering department, I came really close to being able to operate a few movements of a 295B mining shovel in a mine in Arizona. I never had the opportunity, but I did design many of the "big boys" for 9 years!
Really cool. I worked with the guy in charge of that product line at Bucyrus Erie. He basically retired when all that series of machines were mothballed and retired!
A new tire for a 240 ton truck is currently about $65,000. I worked for US Steel and currently volunteer at the Hull Rust / Hibtac Mineview in Hibbing MN. The equipment is very fzmiliar.
Great video. I remember going by the Bucyrus Erie plant in Erie PA. when I was young. I use to thing it was a neet place because they had a big yard where they got to play with all the new toys as the came off the assembly line before shipping them to the customers. Or just because they could.

Forget about the mine's tires Michael! I just got a quote for my RV tires, with FET, new valve stems, installed, disposal fee, and balanced. I have (8) tires, and need (6) new ones at $872 each. OWCH! Sue and I are thinking about renting out one of our recliners and 100 sq. feet when we are in Ft Myers for four months...............we do have and extra 1/2 bath,......?
As a copper miner , the drill diameter is most likely not larger then 12 inches. I think the bench height of this mine is 50 feet. The holes are filled with Anfo, or heavy anfo based on the hardness and water content of the area. In 2013 the main stay failure happened . They knew that the failure was going to happen but didn't know the size. The next part he is looking at is a total station and prism system. Total station shoots a light beam at a reflective surfers and measures the change from the last scan. These are very helpful to show trends over a long time. Busieris was bought out by Cat. The tooth and adapter weight 54 lbs.
The whole mining businesses of copper, coal, taconite, gold or silver have fascinating behind the scenes processes and system infrastructures. I loved my years working at Bucyrus Erie.

All the upper trucks are hauling uselly just dirt so they can widening the bottom.. and there the ones making the hills out side the mined.. and all the trucks in the bottom of the mined are the trucks with copper and minerals
The bottom half of the visitor center was not supposed to happen but they had me go and build some firms up and it was just supposed to be a lookout for kind of hot employees but I did such a good job they said we could do something more down there and they just wanted to spend more money and make the experience a lot more fun and I feel very it's still very great the track marks on the hill And stuff like that that was me tracking in the slopes but I but I feel really proud to be part of that
Not really. I would be better off trading the 2014 for a 2016. I am OK with just taking a little bit more precautions. If I win the lottery I will by a Foretravel FS6.

Hey thanks! We have already moved on quite a distance east, but are SO HAPPY we were smart enough to spend 20 days in SLC. Only a handful of cities truly leave a "wow" factor in our memory. SLC did it to me on my first visit in 1969. I'll be dipped if it didn't do it again in 2019!
Too bad the visitor center isn't there anymore! Half the Mountain slid into the mine about 4 years ago it was a big thing on the news here in Salt Lake.
Sue gave me my card back after I fixed the kitchen slide in the 90 degree heat in a Medora campground, while under the gun to get out of the spot. All is good!

I had read an article about Kennecott Copper mine and wanted to look up video of it and I stumbled across this video. Did you say you got your start at Bucyrus Erie? In Erie, Pa? I am from Erie, Pa. I was a kid when Bucyrus closed, I think it was the 80's.. It was like the first in a long line of manufacturing plants to shut down here. The building itself reopened and it is now PSB. I'm a welder, I've been in there a few times, most recently, last January to take a pipe welding test. Are you originally from Erie, Pa? Huge coincidence that I clicked on this video.

I showed my brother-in-law the your video, before you responded, he actually owns a shop here in Erie, PA and is 10 years older than me and he told me that there was a couple of branches of Bucyrus Erie outside of Pennsylvania and that when they closed here, he thought that they actually moved to a different state, that they didn't close and go out of business, at least at that time. Shoot. If you would have worked at the one here, I was going to ask you for your email and I'd go take a picture of the building now and send it to you. The side of the building that used to say Bucyrus Erie has a huge American Flag mural painted on the side of it, but if you get up close to it, you can still see where it said Bucyrus Erie. The mine operation itself is off limits to the public. With today's geological science, I'm sure the mine owners know exactly where the bottom of the mineral seam is!
Hard surface welding is the one "job from hell" you are referring to in case someone is wondering what Mitch is talking about. Another job from hell is air arcing off the steel input "pipes" going into castings after they have cooled.

I work there, haul trucks haul about 370 tons every load, the tires apparently cost around $70,000 each.

R63 is the rim you know like a regular tire would say somthing like 235 75 R 16 And the R 16 means 16 inch rim

My last job at Bucyrus-Erie before the mining recession was working in the Blast Hole Drill Development Department. Those were the days!

I had read an article about Kennecott Copper mine and wanted to look up video of it and I stumbled across this video. Did you say you got your start at Bucyrus Erie? In Erie, Pa? I am from Erie, Pa. I was a kid when Bucyrus closed, I think it was the 80's.. It was like the first in a long line of manufacturing plants to shut down here. The building itself reopened and it is now PSB. I'm a welder, I've been in there a few times, most recently, last January to take a pipe welding test. Are you originally from Erie, Pa? Huge coincidence that I clicked on this video.
Thanks for stopping by. I worked at Bucyrus Erie Mining Division in South Milwaukee, WI from 1975 to 1981-ish, with a 13 month stint at Harnischfeger Corp. Some of the most interesting and fun beginning years in Engineering. Merry Christmas Jabber Jawz.
@@OurJourneyInMyles - Interesting. See, I was like in grade school when Bucyrus Erie closed here in Erie, Pennsylvania, early to mid 80's. I showed my brother-in-law the your video, before you responded, he actually owns a shop here in Erie, PA and is 10 years older than me and he told me that there was a couple of branches of Bucyrus Erie outside of Pennsylvania and that when they closed here, he thought that they actually moved to a different state, that they didn't close and go out of business, at least at that time. Shoot. If you would have worked at the one here, I was going to ask you for your email and I'd go take a picture of the building now and send it to you. The side of the building that used to say Bucyrus Erie has a huge American Flag mural painted on the side of it, but if you get up close to it, you can still see where it said Bucyrus Erie. Anyways, nice talking to you. Merry Christmas and nice video of the mine. Must be so cool seeing the whole country like you guys do.

The mine operation itself is off limits to the public. With today's geological science, I'm sure the mine owners know exactly where the bottom of the mineral seam is!

Yes, we learned the old center got wiped out. I am sure the Covid thing has put a new visitor center plans on hold, if it ever was even in the plans.

Hard surface welding is the one "job from hell" you are referring to in case someone is wondering what Mitch is talking about. Another job from hell is air arcing off the steel input "pipes" going into castings after they have cooled.
