People don’t realize how big of deal this is and it’s a testament to what the buildwitt guys are doing. Suncor doesn’t let anyone in to film and document their operations. Instead of vilifying them like many publications do he actually shows a positive picture
Proud to say I work there! I'm so grateful for this video because I finally have something to show my family. We aren't allowed to film or take any pictures so this is very special. Thank you for this!!!
Worked at base plant for almost 6 years, always told my family it was a big operation but couldn’t put it into perspective. Thanks for doing this so I can show my family what it was like working around these monsters and the plants!

Facility in Decatur is something like 125 acres, and theres also a huge Dozer plant 2 hr away in Peoria IL, along with a Komatsu plant in Peoria as well
Thank you Aaron for showing my great province of Alberta's life line. We are the back bone to our country and to a large part of the worlds economy. Oil and Gas; Petroleum industry is the coolest industry you could ever work in 💪
I visited the Syncrude mine back in 1984. At that time they were mining the bitumen with massive draglines and windrowing the bitumen in to large windrows. The windrows were picked up by a large wheel excavator, much like the ones you see in German coal mines, and placed on to a conveyor belt and taken to crusher and the processing plant. That method fell out of favour due to the corrosive nature of the sand on the conveyor belt. Syncrude changed to the shovel/trucking method seen here sometime in the early 90's. Great video!
@@AHomelessDorito Dispatchers use a program to essentially tell the trucks where they need to go. The dispatchers goal is to optimize the amount of trucks they need per each shovel to never have a shovel waiting without a truck being there. They also need to make sure the hoppers/plant is getting the correct blend of material so they can optimize how they extract the oil from the sand. So when Aaron went into the truck and shows off that panel that said the operator had 19 minutes left of their lunch break that was the Modular dispatch panel (Modular is just the brand of panel and the makers of the dispatch program there are also others such as WENCO). On that panel the operator will get a message telling them to go to X shovel or X hopper/dump.
@@philipwallstedt5685 I worked in the manned operations so i am not an expert on the topic, but Suncor uses Kamatsu's AHS system the way it works is essentially there are 2 different programs running Modular Dispatch and Frontrunner. Frontrunner being the system used to actually control the AHS trucks. But the trucks are pretty well fully autonomous the way it works is by supervisors in the pits drawing lines for the haul trucks then the haul trucks using their super precise GPS systems will stay exactly on those lines. They also have a whole array of cameras and lidar on the front and back of the truck where they will sense nearby objects and stop if needed. But they fully back up to the shovel and dumps and will dump off on their own. @Aaron Witt just released a video on them as well that talks about them a little further.
Oh my God I'm so excited to share this with my family!!! FINALLY an in-depth, high quality video that shows EXACTLY what my job is!! I've been driving truck in Millenium for over 8 years now, and this is the BEST video I've seen about the trucks and shovels. Thank you!!!
I work in a shop building the beds of these trucks (I saw some of our logos on a couple of the trucks), and it is really different to see them on the trucks instead of on our shop floor or up on stands. Really made me realize how big they are. Also the bucket on that EX8000 looks like it came out of our shop as well.
I have a video from the port of Long Beach of when we loaded out the small arm of a EX8000 loader. 110t crane could pick and set maybe 25 feet out. That machine swings it around at about 38 foot with a bucket and load all day. Wow
This was awesome to see, thanks for doing this video. I worked for North American at fort hills for a while and I thought my 793 was a big truck lol until I saw the 980’s running around haha.

What people don't know is that millions of years ago that Bitumen layer was the ocean floor. The Bitumen is what's left over from the organic matter left behind. The water sand he's talking about is actually million year old sea water trapped under ground. Before they can open up new ground and remove the over burden they drill deep wells and pump the sea water out for months sometimes year before mining!
Yeah I worked in a coal mine in the Rockies so like a more extreme version of this with more big Ramps and easy places to slide out in the trucks . The shovels were massive and the d11s seemed small . The wheel loaders are huge to . Laterneu 2350 is what we had for wheel loaders . Just massive

They've had Autonomous Haul Trucks for over 10 years. They put Cabs on the Trucks so you can go with or without a driver.
