Most of the comments I receive on this video are positive and I really enjoy reading them. However, it should be noted that if you plan to post a comment that is political or negative in anyway towards Bakersfield, it will be removed without warning.
I traveled thru this area a lot when I was kid on are way up to Kernville past lake Isabella into the upper Kern river into Johnsonville to trout fish. My dad and mom were obsessed with Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. So after four or five days of hardcore fishing we would always spend the night in Lamont or Bakersfield depending on who was playing where. They would meet up with my Aunt and Uncle who lived in Visalia. Pretty cool, I was a kid on the side of a bar with my cousins in these Hillbilly joints kind of hanging out on the side of the bar drinking Coke and 7-UP with other kids of musicians from the bands and elsewhere. I saw Buck Owens countless times and Merle Haggard plus many others. I remember a lot of guest musicians walking up and Joining in, one in particular was Roy Clark. He played everything, never seen anything like that. Wow what a great time to see these folks inventing and playing the Bakersfield sound! Will never forget it. LONG LIVE THE CALIFOINIA SOUND OF THESE PIONEERS!
Loved this. I grew up in Bakersfield around this music and the history. My parents and grandparents listened to it and watched the Cousin Herb Show. They were from Oklahoma. Kay Hall
So glad you posted this. Noticed it originally aired in 1991. Everyone featured in that video has passed on, I'm sad to say, just about every vestige of that era in Bakersfield has faded away and disappeared from view. Sure, there's a public street still named Buck Owens Blvd but the streets of Bakersfield are long gone.
Used to watch Cousin Herb Henson ( Fuzzy on fiddle)on KERO channel 10 on black and white T.V. (we could only receive 2 stations..😁) sad to see Bakersfield Inn torn down..
When you remove a negative comment find out who they are and lets REMOVE them, they will be easy to find since they probably live in Nashville, haha. I have watched this documentary numerous times, its a bygone era in music. I loved it but I could have heard a little more about Red Simpson. Well done and thank you.

Great documentary series
nicely restored too!
Great piece of music and CA history.
Thanks for presenting this video. Gold...
I was born in Oklahoma and have been here most of my life. It's fascinating to hear remnants of an Oklahoma accent from the 1920s in California.
Is there anything left of this epoke in ca today?
I got to meet Rose when I was in high school. I was in awe! 💘
Aww-yeah!
The only country music for me, is the Bakersfield Sound!!
No Hank Williams?
I live around the corner from the old lucky spot.
Wish someone would restore the lucky spot. Surprised it's still standing
Real and thank you for a great posting.
Merle Haggard NEVER recorded a bad song.

Brilliant! Bravo!
Great History On Real C&W Music
I still miss the barrel house
What song is Merle Haggard playing from 9 minutes 50 seconds to 10 minutes 9 seconds
I believe it's the California blues
@@HootNightowl well sure as heck sounds like it but the words were different. Not like we haven't seen that songs before.
Or California, California? One or the other.
@@HootNightowl unfortunately those two titles didn't come up in the UA-cam search for the songs
California Cottonfields
