- These little milk pies our grandmothers used to make are a simple and delicious way to use up leftover pastry! Many thought they were better than what grandma was actually making for the adults, LOL! I also share what my grandma made and that was simple pastry chips! Never let anything go to waste!
PA DUTCH MILK PIE -For 2 small tarts
Left over pie crust dough (Video for my pie crust here - • The Queen's Pie Crust
Filling-
1/4 C milk
2 tbs sugar
1 tbs flour
pinch of salt
Mix all together well.
Bake crusts in ramekin dishes coated in butter for 15 min. @ 350F.
Fill the partially baked crusts with the mixture evenly.
Sprinkle cinnamon on top.

It will deflate a little and set while cooling.

Oh my! I’m loving the scenery of snow falling and trees through your window! You lucky lady!
Thank you, I do love my 4 seasons!
My mom would take that leftover pastry, butter cinnamon n sugar, roll n cut into one inch pinwheels n oh my heaven..when she got older she used canned dough. Still yummy..thx helga👍✌💜😊
Oh, that'd be a nice way to do it, too!
We had this to do. I do this with store bought dough. So good. Mom calls them Kissies.
Memories of both of these recipes from childhood.😍 Without your channel, I'm not sure I'd have ever remembered them again. Thank Helga!😊
My pleasure 😊 Glad it brings good memories!
My grandma always makes us kids the cinnamon pie crust with leftover dough. It was always such a treat!!!
I always thought so too. My dad loved it and always made it for us, too, and taught mom to do the same!
My mom and grandmother made something similar. They called them milk flappies. In the bottom of their pie shells...a layer of flour, then sugar (mix with fingers), then lay pats of butter, cover with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
Yup, I think every family had their own little way of doing it!
oh Helga this brings back such beautiful memories Thank You! Also thanks for the holiday card....You were the only card I got thank you.....
You're so welcome! I'm glad it found you, I'm still getting Christmas cards! LOL!
We used to have strips with cinnamon sugar . Good memories. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome!
Helga, you amaze me with your wonderful creative family recipes. I just love all your beautiful stories about each recipe. Thank you so much for sharing all your memories from your family heritage. I truly enjoy your wonderful channel. God Bless You. Love Tamson 😇💗
Thank you so much! Blessings!
@@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😘😇👍👍👍👍👍🙋
Those little ramikins were such a cute idea. Most people will have all the ingredients already for both recipes. Thank you for sharing. 😊
You are so welcome!
My Grandma from Philadelphia always did the butter & cinnamon thing with the dough scraps, I didn't know about PA Dutch milk pie at all till now! Glad to see some winter weather thru the window, brings back memories too.
Glad it brought good memories! Thank you!
Look so good. I truly believe some of the best food is also the simplest food!! Thanks Helga. Just love your stories too.
Glad you like them!
So much fun. My grandmother made both of them. The milk pies, she made full size pies. Sort of like an egg custard pie without the eggs. She made the cinnamon/sugar treat also, but she rolled them up like a rugelach. Great memories. Thanks.
I've made them full size too, in the past. I love these so much as does Mike. So simple and so good! Thank you!
Yum! Surprisingly looks delish even without an egg & milk only, will try! Thank you for sharing!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you Helga...I had forgotten all about these! My Gramma used to make them for us and they were so good! Definitely going to do these again 😊. Take care!
You are so welcome!
I love watching you tear into your creations, lol. It makes me feel pretty sure they are yummy and makes me wanna make them right away!
Thanks so much 😊 I always felt is important, I am always suspicious of people who don't really eat the food they make, LOL!
These look great. Never seen them before. I’ll definitely make both in the future.
Thank you!
Helga my friend, those look divine 👊like all of the food you create!! I’ve been extremely tardy in my video watching lately. So happy this one popped up on my feed 👍Hope you are doing awesome Helga ✌️cheers.
Welcome back, Jeff! Hope you're staying warm up there! Maybe getting some ice fishing in?
Such a great little treat! As an adult it looks like comfort food to me! Will be a must try Thank you Helga for this one!!
It's totally comfort food! Thank you!
My Mom would roll out the dough....put butter, brown sugar and cinnamon on half and fold it over to a half moon shape. Makes like a thick syrup in the middle! So good! I may try the milk pies...looks yummy!
Sounds great!
I remember making this with my Aunt when I was little. Can't wait to make it now. So glad I found your channel. Used to have family in Kulpmont & spent a lot of time at Knobels. Keep the recipes coming!!
You are so welcome! I will!
My mom used the left over pie dough and fill it with jelly. Basically a jelly turnover. They were so good.
Yummy!
What a neat little thing to do! They both look yummy!
They are wonderful little treats!
That looks sooooo goooood
Thank you!
Basically an eggless custard pie. Looks good to me. I make the chips too, but i cut them into strips with a pizza cutter. I got some pie dough in the freezer to use up, so maybe these will be on the list. Thank you for the recipe, Helga. Stay safe and stay warm
Yup, pretty much! Thanks and stay warm up there!
Thank you for sharing. I added it to my list!
Thanks for watching!
Tonight’s dinner... Cabbage steaks, kielbasa with fried green peppers and onions, and for dessert blueberry cobbler ala Helga. Thank You. Wish we had a blueberry plant, tree thing, just awesome.
HA! Sounds good to me! Glad you're eating well!
Hi Helga, that reminds me of my mother who was from Dauphin County, PA. She didn't make milk pie but she rolled up the left over crust, buttered it and dusted it with sugar and cinnamon, rolled it up, cut it in pieces and baked it like lots of other mothers. I don't know if you've ever made buttermilk pie, but I promise you'll like it if you like milk pie. Thanks.
I haven't had buttermilk pie in a long time, but yes, I love it! Thank you! Good memories!
My mother always took the left over scraps of pie dough and sprinkled cinnamon sugar on it and bake it delicous! I’m from Lebanon county PA home of Lebanon bologna
Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it!
Yum!!!💖
Thank you!
HELGA 👏♥️👏
THANK YOU FOR SHARING “PRECIOUS” MEMORIES FROM YOU & YOUR HUSBAND MIKE’S CHILDHOOD 👍♥️👌😀 I LOVED LEARNING THIS…I AM A GRANDMA OF A
6 & 7 YEAR OLD & I THINK THEY WOULD LOVE EITHER OF THE TREATS ✔️
I LOVE SIMPLE TREATS THAT MONEY CANNOT BUY ♥️ IT MEANS LOVE ♥️
TO ME ❗️
I APPRECIATE THAT YOU KEEP IT REAL AND TO THE POINT ON YOUR CHANNEL👍
GOD BLESS YOU 🙏♥️🙏
:) Diane
I'm sure they would, we did and have remembered them all our lives!
My grandma made milk pie's a lot, and she also made cinnamon flop's. O how I miss her good Cook'n.
You grew up with the good stuff like we did!
Yes, and it's the best Cook'n you can get, right here in central Pennsylvania. My Mom and generations back on both of my sides, we all cooked Dutch food's. My dad, he's 77, and to this day still calls it (fill'n in the Turkey). A lot of ppl still ask me what's fill'n, the same with pot-pie.
Thank you for the Milk Pie recipe Helga! I have always wondered how my Great Grandma made those and they really do bring back a lot of memories. I don't know why, but I always assumed she just made these as a custard with eggs, but after watching how you made them, I think she must have done them the same way as you did! ....and with the cinnamon on top of course
You are so welcome! Are you down in Hershey?
@@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot Hi Helga, my name is Thomlin, it's nice to meet you. Thank you so much for subscribing to me as well, I really appreciate it! I'm just starting out with my channel so it's tough right now to make friends! Yep I'm right on Chocolate Avenue, across from the new Iron Hill Brewery. Chocolate Avenue Baking Company isn't open yet though, and I'm still testing out all my recipes. So I figured I would make videos on all of my recipe tests!
@@SmallTownFudge Let me know when you open, I'd love to visit! I'm not a pro like you but appreciate what you're doing! You're only 45 min south of me. :D
@@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot Well thank you Helga, that's very kind of you to say! I'd say you're pretty professional and successful yourself, and people really seem to love your channel! I'll definitely stay in touch with you. I'd be honored to do a collab. video with you sometime on a PA Dutch dessert! In my humble opinion, I'd say Pennsylvania Dutch (and German) Bakers are amongst the best in the world!
Look delicious. Helga, grabbing those little pies like that remind me of my mom. We called her asbestos fingers
My mom made these and we called them “Mom’s Simple Pies”.
That works!
Good morning Helga ☕😊...Simple and yummy 😋
I'm behind but good morning to you! Hope you're doing well! Thank you!
@@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot Yes l am thank you. Hoping that you & yours are well too 😊💜
Hi Helga, your milk pie looks so flaky and delicious, my Mom used to make something like this.
It's good memories for sure!
A bit like baking custard Helga, only much simpler. Will try those
I hope you like them, they are delectable! Thanks, Gaz!
This recipe seems like my husbands mom (from Iowa) called poor man's pie back in the 60s.
I'm sure most folks had their own version! You didn't waste anything!
@@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot I'm sure you are right (I didn't think about that).
"screw the fork" 🤣🤣
LOL, my bad!
Of course you know I'm about to raid something here now LOL
😂😂
alll loooo min ee mum
If you're from the land down under. LOL.
Could you make them with half and half instead of milk?
Absolutely!
How long do you pre-bake the dough?
You don't blind bake them to keep them from proofing up
Understood, but I personally like them better this way, LOL.
