Heh as a cellist, you just map out your entire finger board, and learn your instrument. And it allows you to play more notes, and slide. Idk I’m not an expert but it’s a lot of just knowing and playing your instrument.
Oh to be a guitarist. Its purely muscle memory and sometimes you have to just listen if youre new to that position/havent played it in a while (a violinist)
fingers are always spaced the same way for every position (first, second, third). you orient the position based on where other elements of the cello are. the neck, body, etc. it takes a few seconds to get used to every time, but that's what warmups are for!

As bass (electric and upright) you learn by hand positions throught the fingerboard. Similar to a trombone player learning their slide positions.
