Great video my friend and great advice. I like your showing people how to become a handyman. I share your video with some of my friends who are younger than me who want to do this work. Oh so very funny about the comments about sneakers. In my days it was PS flyers. They were supposed to make you jump higher and run faster. When I got mines I thought they were broken because I didn't jump higher and it all ran faster.lol😂

Having that business license can make a big difference. I've gotten a lot of business just because the side of my truck and my advertising always says license and insured. Look into it, it's not as expensive as you might think. Good luck

Great video Daryl. Keep them coming. Things are slow up here in PA. My local Sherwin Williams store said a lot of people are buying paint and doing their own painting work instead of hiring someone. Looking forward to spring.

This is definitely one of those seasons that'll test your heart. Things have historically picked up by the end of February so we'll see. The big box stores always consider their hottest season to be from spring break to 4th of July.

1:41 I am so envious of this trait! It’s been something I’ve struggled with for years.
When I was younger I genuinely cared what people thought and would obsess over it. My self esteem was pretty low.
Now I have a lot better self esteem, and logically I don’t care what people think. I don’t spend much time thinking about what other people think. Still, when it comes to making decisions, I find myself people pleasing as a default. I avoid confrontation. Even though, logically, I can think my way past it….emotionally, it’s still really hard for me to live life on my own terms.
Your videos are encouraging, I appreciate them so much.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I went in on this one first because it seems to be what most people have trouble with. It's good to hear that you're doing better with it now. There's nothing wrong with being a people pleaser until you start living your life based on others while they get to live however they want.
I really hope you are taking charge, enabling yourself to do the things that you want to do or at least try to do. Small wins add up!

Sometimes is money the problem, for example I started my business in 2020, and still have my 9 to 5 just because I'm scared not to make the same money I make in my 9 to 5. From my business my rings for 2 weeks straight than it doesn't for 2 weeks. I need to be making about $6000 monthly to be able to quit my 9 to 5. I live in Maryland and everything is so expensive here.

You're right, you got to be your own biggest supporter. If you're lucky, somebody will have your back in the beginning but everybody doesn't have that luxury. A lot of people out here are talking just to have something to say even about things they don't know anything about. Even worse, some people can't do it so they project their feelings about themselves onto you. We can't let that happen. Thanks for watching and good luck in whatever you're trying to do!

Clearly you’re skilled and have plenty of experience with the drywall and paint. I think it’s a good time to go back and check out some advanced videos to take it to the next level. Switching up a few things would really save you time. For drywall check out Vanceouver Carpenter and painting Idaho Painter. Just some tips: no need to cut in that thick (takes more time and will also leave more paint on the top portion of wall) and also your brushing backwards. With joint compound you start with your existing material and move away. Cutting in you want to go ahead 12”-18” and come back to your work. Same with trim it’s the only way to keep it consistent. That way you don’t keep messing with the paint you already have on which thins it out sometimes, it also makes it easier to run your brush strokes together. Leaving 1 smooth continuous stroke at the end. It feels weird at first but trust me, there’s a reason ALL painting pros do it. I was taught to do it like you are by a guy that was good but no straight up professional, when a paint crew came in I asked dude “why is he cutting in like that?” And he said “they’re left handed I guess” lmao he didn’t have a clue. I went to work with the best painter I’ve met (knew only how to paint, couldn’t hold a drill but we did custom build multi million dollar houses) a few years later thinking I was pretty solid. He tore me to shreds and I realized I had no idea what I was doing. I was definitely legit and had painted nearly flawless walls with last crew. There’s just different levels to it

Nice video. I’m putting this to the test. I’m picking up steam to go from PT to FT. I’m doing a marketing blitz next weekend (waiting on door hangers & flyers) to help ramp up.
    I got a job this weekend - $575 + materialsI “think” it’ll take me 6-7hrs over 2 days. Really hoping not 10😂.
Curious - What do you think you’d charge for:
Tile repair around tub- just 1 row. those old 4x4 80s tiles - full length around the tub
    Re-caulk tub
    Shower head install
    Diverter valve install
Shower bar repair (it’s on the old tile)
A quick railing repair - secure screws
I think I easily should of charged more … like my full day rate - $750+ but trying to get off the bench consistently. The client is not ideal. Need richer people :)

    • @DarylTheFINISHER
      @DarylTheFINISHER  9 місяців тому +1

It's good that you're getting out there. Pricing can be difficult, especially when you don't know how long some of the jobs take. My minimum on any tile work is $400 because regardless of how small I still have to use all the same tools as I would for a large job.
If you were replacing the shower cartridge then that may not take too long, but if it's the actual diverter then that's a major job that I would charge hundreds of dollars for.
Honestly, I probably be closer to 1500 for everything you listed, but I don't know your market. Jobs like recaulking tubs can be very time consuming. Make sure you keep records on how long the jobs take you for future reference. Good luck!

      @@DarylTheFINISHER appreciate the feedback,
Confirmed I was being too generous with my time. The diverter is just a cartridge… praying the shutoff valves don’t give me no issues. Sounds like $1,000 would’ve been fine, damn!…but she should be giving me more jobs. Older lady, that has some money. I got her trust now, will see. If not, I learned. Thanks again man

That's okay. When I started out I took less just to get some of the jobs , just so I can get the experience and have before and after pictures for the website. My current boss is trying to intimidate me out of doing my handyman business. She saw it all over Facebook and started telling me I had to do this and had to do that bc she could get sued by my work if the customer tried to sue and found out I work for her. I’m trying to to get started but I’ve only been able to complete one job 2024.
