    Awe hell no. Man I had a similar. This lady was hard to deal with from the jump. I had 10k of roof marerials in the driveway ready to go and she wanted to play games acting out and had also been drinking.
    I handed her check back and said mam im having the materials picked up immediately.
    I walked. It was tough as she was a referral too but at the end the one who referred didn't care and felf bad and sent me more jobs lol.
    Good vids man!

    I've had customers like that, and you're right Daryl, when work is slow you don't have the luxury to fired a customer and that really eats at me for a long time.
    It's a terrible feeling,
    Thanks for the lecture sir.

      I appreciate you watching. Sometimes you got to do what you have to do but eventually you build your business to the point where you don't have to deal with certain people anymore.

    I recently learn if your first estimate is a lot more than what the client was expecting and wants you to reduce it by removing certain projects from the estimate. It's best just to move on and say you're not a right fit for their project plenty of guys that do it on the side and can do it cheaper than me. Nine out of ten times they are not going to accept the new estimate either and if they do accept it they are most likely still thinking they are paying too much and will try to add more work once you start or have an over high expectation like your work is going to look gold plated.

      Agreed! Some people complain about the chuck in a truck but there is definitely a place for them. Everybody can't afford professional work and lowering the price is no longer an option.

    Found your channel about a month ago. Watched every video. Loved them all. Started my business as a side hustle about 5 months ago. I’m getting very close to turning this into my full time job now. Love setting my own schedule and only answering to my wife. Keep up the videos. Awesome job and very helpful/informative 👍

    It is good to have solid principles. Good for you to recognize and stay away from flaky folks! I have had some folks like those as prospects, even clients for some time, trying to play me for cheap, push me around like their servants, until I quit.

    A customer asked me to repair her window screen. I quoted her $100 plus materials to which she agreed. I showed up with the materials and she had a roll of adhesive screen repair tape. She wanted me to put the tape on for $10. I just left…

      That's the best move you could have made. I stay away from people who want cheap work done as well. For instance, I refuse to install peel and stick tile because in 3 months when it starts peeling off they'll be calling me to come back!

      Always always always take a deposit for the job no matter how big or small that servers as a lock In Also more importantly it puts to bed any cheap labor or material ways of getting things done out side of what you quote @thepittsburghtoddy @darylthefinisher

    Glad you’re back Daryl!
    My very first customer ( just started my business a month ago) was a nightmare, and in addition to that I under bid it. So when he asked me to come back for the same type of work and give him an estimate, I tripled it this time and he lost his mind🤷🏻‍♂️. needless to say, it is my responsibility to vet personalities, it was a learning moment for me.
    No regrets…moving on!

    • @DarylTheFINISHER
      @DarylTheFINISHER  Рік тому

      That's how it goes sometimes. I've done the exact same thing, under bid the first job and then came back with the sledgehammer the second time. Was crazy is that people will know that they got to steal the first time and just expect to keep getting the same steal...

    Dude you speak the truth! I don’t know where you’re from brother I’m just north of Boston mass. I’ve been doing this for five years and there’s only two people I wouldn’t work for ever again because they were just so hard to deal with but you’re absolutely right you need to fire a customer sometimes I love your videos. I love your content keep it up brother do you have a fan appear in Boston I wish you were local maybe you are? I buy a cup of coffee or a beer. I’d love to pick your brain.

      I appreciate you bro! I'm on the east coast but not that for north. I'm in the area where Pennsylvania/Delaware/Maryland are close together. We'll get that coffee one day. To me, not having to work with people I don't particularly like is a huge benefit to working for myself.

    Dear Daryl,,,you are one badass Handyman and Teacher/ UA-camr! You dah man Daryl!!!! Congratulations !!!In this here video of yours just shared your experience dealing with a DHA ,,
    yes i repeat Daryl ,,I'll say it again a DHA!! And what pray tell does that mean ? A DHA is a DOWN HOME ASSHOLE !!! I must admit Daryl , and I take my heat off to you,, you sure as Hell handled this situation well! Out hear in California particularly in Los Angeles , we gotta lot of DHA's running around asking me to do worlk for them but I refuse. I screen out and dismiss my DHA's over the telephone! I know in five minutes time whether or not I can work with them . If I dont have a "MEETING OF THE MINDS" in the first 5 or 10 minutes conversation I won't even make an appointment.HELL NO , I WONT GO!!!! You mention this dude was in the military , maybe some king of officer,,,REALLY??? Can you imaging what this dude would be like as your commanding officer? That would be a real picnic wouldnt it? LOL!!!! I am a big Blues fan Daryl ,,,and I love the old Blues singers like BB King and Howling Wolf,,and in one of his songs called "The Killing Floor" He talks about "not listening to my first mind". What he means is he didn't not listen to that intuitive self talk , ,that cautious instinctive common sense voice we all have in our heads that says "dont do that". Now keeping that thought we do do that and then get into a Hell of a lot of trouble. OK Daryl , I'll get off my soapbox now. Again thanks for all you great videos and commentary and keep up the GOOD WORK! and OH YEAH ,,watch out for them ther DHA's!!!!! LOL. DD in L.A.

    • @DarylTheFINISHER
      @DarylTheFINISHER  2 дні тому

      Thanks for the comment DD. I'm out here on the East Coast and I've ran across quite a few DHA's. After years and years of having jobs dealing with customers though I've been pretty good at picking out which ones aren't going to work out before I even meet with them. I wasn't really feeling the guy I was talking about at first but he was a referral from one of my best customers so I figured I would give it a chance. I should have listened to my 'first mind' lol. I appreciate you watching!

    I have done work before when the customer has been VERY adamant about me doing something i tell them i can't guarantee the long term outlook. In other words it might not hold up for reasons outside the scope of my job. i explain thoroughly you can't guarantee it. They convinced me to do it. When that job fails long term, they will conveniently forget all of the conversation, and act surprised.
    I also turn away a lot of new referrals because of smokers. I have 2 employees, they make a good appearance, are polite to my customers, and do good work. None of us smoke, so we don't work in houses that smell like ash trays. Plenty of fish in the sea

    • @DarylTheFINISHER
      @DarylTheFINISHER  Рік тому

      I'm with you on the smokers houses. I put together a bed in a chain smokers house last year and could hardly breathe. They called me about a week later and I turned them away. It's great to have that option.

    Daryl man this video helped set my mind at ease a bit. I had to fire a customer today in the middle of a project due to lack of trust and professionalism.. I’ve been in business now going on 5 months and this is the first customer I have ever had to let go. I went back and forth with myself for days debating if I should finish or just part ways. Long story short the customer violated personal boundaries and I had to let them go. I feel it was the right decision.

    • @DarylTheFINISHER
      @DarylTheFINISHER  11 місяців тому +2

      I'm glad it helped you! Believe me, you only need a small percentage of all the customers out there to make a great living. Walmart has to try to serve everyone that walks in the door, you don't have to.

      @@DarylTheFINISHER Thank you for replying to my message. I was stressing the situation a little while back but I feel a weight off my shoulders after handling my business. We closed the job out proper and added another lesson to the books.

      I had a job early on where we mutually agreed to part ways. Originally I had given them a detailed estimate with every little job I was doing broken down as a line item with a price attached. They cherry picked that estimate to death. Lesson learned. Even though it's a headache at the time, it all pays off in the end as long as you keep going. Congrats!

      @@DarylTheFINISHER We just moved on to a bathroom remodel which is right up my alley. I closed out that other job and sent a detailed Receipt to the customer and settled all debts and credits. I too learned my lesson from delivering overly detailed estimates, it works from some just not everyone. But I gain a lot anytime I watch your videos Daryl, thanks for putting in the extra time to reach out!

    I fired two of my customers too. Started off nice. Tried to get me for my paper. I lady I worked for her for 5 years
    Always calling me to do I gave a price and she told me that she could not afford 50 .00 I said ok when she call I don't answer
    On flip side I gained another customer.

    Yes, not all customers are your customers. Its difficult but we have to accept it. I recently turned down a needy customer that was from out of my work area. From that I learned to just tell them I don't service the area from the start.

Unfortunately, I fired my family from promoting my services!They mean well but when potential customers call and say oh uncle so n so said you could do this! And i give them a price and they again say oh...well you know i know uncle blah blah. I used to try real hard to please but man oh man its like pulling teeth. But Unfortunately, i had to shut it down and tell them my uncle doesnt pay my bills! This is what i can do it for and if it doesn't work for you thanks for thinking of me and good luck.
