I’m still at a thankless job, and realized a couple of years ago that I preferred working with my hands. And had the opportunity to briefly work with a handyman.

Been a maintenance worker for a company making $22-24 hourly in Indiana. It’s not bad for a single person, but I know I can make a way better living doing this myself instead of helping someone else’s dream. I’m decided.

Recently transitioned out of a telecom/network engineering career and started my handyman business:
    - established an LLC
    - created my website
    - setup my CRM
    - tied CRM to website
    - picked up commercial liability
    - passed the general contractor exam (Res C) for marketing purposes
    - got licensed in the counties for my service area
    - created logo and ordered cards, t-shirts, hat
    - created a business plan (Don Miller’s flight plan model)
    - LOTS of SEO related work
    - lots of other things I’m forgetting
    - did my first job (whole house water filter - Pex-A). Got a 5 star review.
Now I need to pull in more customers.
If I were to do this again I would probably just pay for Allen’s website/SEO service. I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time on this.

Build your business by making yourself known to Real Estate Agents and Locksmiths. People moving in or out often have a list of tasks that are a perfect match for a handyman. The Real Estate Agent will appreciate having a name to provide them. I include Locksmiths because often when people move in they change all the locks and ask the Locksmith if they can do their tasks. The Locksmith will be happy to be able to send them your way.

I've become naturally handy when I became a homeowner about 3 years ago. Nothing crazy, and I outsourced some things I coulda/shoulda done myself. Do you think this basic skillset I've acquired would be enough to kick off advertising myself as a handyman for things like running replacing fill valves, mounting TV's, clearing clogged drains, gardening basics, etc.? I trust myself to learn along the way and go slow.

This video, and this channel, are geared towards someone becoming a Handyman as a full time job. Note that it can be a satisfying part-time job, especially for a retiree. In any town there are a lot of people who need ‘small’ jobs done. That’s a better match for a part-timer than someone whose whole income depends on it. If you’ve owned your own home for a while you’ve probably already acquired many of the needed skills and tools.
Speaking as such a part timer I can say I do it for 3 reasons; it gets me out of the house, it makes a little money, and it helps people who have no other resource.

TN is maximum $25,000 believe it or not.. which means I will not have to get a Contractor's license..yeah! The city and counties I will be operating in are the same. Also starting this year there will be no personal property tax on any business with less than $100,000 gross, which is awesome. All I need is a basic business license and insurance. I am trying to clarify if I have to carry worker's comp on myself?

Great info! Thanks so much. I have been watching your videos for a few years now and have been apprehensive about moving forward with starting a handyman business because of so many unknowns. I am 50 years old and would love to do this kind of work but all I have ever known is a steady paycheck by not being self employed. I would love to get over that fear and take the chance. This video sure helps with knowing exactly the steps to take. Its helps alleviate some of the fear on moving forward. Thanks again!

Gotta be honest, If you're starting a handyman service you should already have the tools you need. How can you claim to know what you're doing if you don't even have the correct tools to do the job before hand?

    • @handymanjourney
      @handymanjourney  5 місяців тому

A lot of people don't have all the tools that they need that doesn't mean they don't know how to do the work! Everyone starts in different place and people who come from a different trade background or a different job altogether may not have all the tools that they need for the specific tasks that a handyman does but that doesn't mean that they don't know how to do the work. Buy the tools as needed and grow from there

I’m an 18 year old with 0 experience in anything considering getting into being a handyman and starting a business. I’ve been watching a lot of UA-cam videos about it but I can’t find any that talk about how to start the handyman aspect rather than just the business aspect. Is it an apprenticeship kind of thing or college or just get out there? How do you start to be a handyman? Also great video! Thank you !

Your figures for the revenues of the handyman business in the United States are inaccurate. I just googled it and it said something like 270 billion a year.
