Meet Jason 'Cheese' Goldberg, one of today's busiest rap vocal tracking engineers. The LA-based audio engineer has developed a minimalist tracking setup that allows him to record modern rap anywhere. A Mac Mini, an Apollo Twin interface, and the Sphere L22 are all he needs. With a no-nonsense approach that always puts the talent first, Jason keeps cranking out chart-topping tracks at breakneck speed. In this video he deconstructs his philosophy to record rappers such as Rich The Kid, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and BEAM.
Inspired by the current trend to record modern rap and pop vocals in the control room and on-the-go, Jason developed a mobile setup that he travels with. Turning everything from tour busses, Airbnb lofts, and hotel rooms into makeshift studios, recording in actual studios is an exception. The setup allows Jason to cut professional records with the utmost flexibility. His streamlined recording rig gives him the consistency, speed, and quality that his clients demand.
Jason tracks with the UA Console in record mode to print the sound of the Neve 88RS Unison preamp and the Sphere plug-in. His favorite choices for mic models are the LD-800, BP-251E, and the BP-67 (both from the UAD Bill Putnam Collection). But he also loves the 414 models based on the iconic condenser mics from Austria.
The setup with the Sphere L22 was instrumental in capturing the vocals for Rich The Kid's latest album 'BOSS MAN.' For several months, Goldberg traveled around the United States, following Rich The Kid's busy schedule. In the video, Jason recounts the session with Rich The Kid and YoungBoy Never Broke Again for the song "Racks On."
    Chapters:
    00:00 Introduction
00:20 Why did Jason develop his own mobile rig to record anywhere?
01:59 What does Jason's modern rap vocal tracking rig consist of?
02:23 Why did Jason Goldberg choose the Sphere L22 as his vocal mic?
02:49 How do artists react to the Sphere L22?
03:30 What was the recording process for Rich The Kid's 'BOSS MAN' album?
06:24 What's it like to work with the mobile rig?
07:03 How did Sphere's polar patterns help get a tight sound for BEAM?
08:48 Dropping in on Rich The Kid's "Money Talk" with the Sphere L22
11:15 Why is having your own setup important for up and coming producers?
12:54 Was Jason skeptical about the L22 at first and why did he go with it in the end?

I can vouch. I have a c800g and I couldn’t hear a difference between the mics. My clients prefer the Townsend after hearing it action. This mic is amazing, it’s now my go to microphone.

I've had the same experience in all but one situation. In blind comparisons, the artists and producers I've asked to pick between their [insert classic/vintage/pricey mic model here] and the L22, they think the L22 is the "real" mic because it always sounds more like how people feel the mic should sound than the actual mic does, so we used the L22. Most of these mics are well past their expiry date and there are often no replacement parts. Townsend Labs are not just innovators. They are curators of musical history. And let's be honest, who of us would ever have had a chance to use the Tracy Korby U87 mod or the Soyuz 017? I'm finding these emulations are some of the most versatile and sonically pleasing tools ever made. Plus, being able to mix a TK U87 and a 017 is heaven. FWICT, the Soyuz is the least accurate model to my ears. I've never actually used one, and never heard them side-by-side, but there is something truly magical about the sound of the real 017 that I don't get from the emulation, and maybe that has to do with the mathematics they used in designing the body, but I think it may be that I've heard the $4K tube version and TL (wisely) modeled the FET version. It creates these glorious harmonics that make a C12 sound shabby and a c800g sound painfully brittle in comparison. Other than the 017, I'd assume the L22 is outperforming the mics I don't know just as well as it is those I do!

I bought one and I am excited about this microphone and the quality. Many people come in the studio and say, what the hell kind of microphone is this, man I feel like I’m in a high end studio. The choices are unmatched to say the least, is beyond words. Great Product!

Hi Jason, Thank You for doing these videos and explaining your process. Question, how are you setting up console and protools to get the least latency possible? Are you using virtual channels in console ? Or low latency monitoring in protools?

Where can I get one, it seems the mic is only be ordered online and it is out of stock in any where now due to the pandemic. When will it back in stock?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

It's a combination of strong demand and the pandemic that has caused production constraints. We are shipping mics, just not at the speed that we'd like to and we are in the process of catching up. How long it will take to be back in stock depends on your location, and when your preferred dealer has placed an order. I would recommend talking to your dealer to find out when they expect to be back in stock. - Julian
