The type of paper used for the manga original is called a coquille board. In America editorial cartoonists like Paul Conrad have used it. It has a surface pattern that creates zipatone -like dots with charcoal or litho crayon - and what makes it different from something like rough textured watercolor paper is you can still draw on it with brush and ink too without the lines breaking into drybrush all the time. It's fascinating that a paper can have both of those qualities simultaneously, I've never been able to find anything like it so I haven't been able to try what it's like drawing on that.
Paranoia agent is a 13 episode anime composed of ideas that Kon had over the years that he couldn’t fit in his other works. To me, it is his best work. The storyboard book has the boards Kon did himself on the show. He did not board every episode so don’t expect to see the boards for the majority of the episodes. Ohayo was a short film Kon had made.
It's actually an anime as gar ad I can tell (I'm a huge weeb) not sure that Kon ever did comics about it from what I can tell but I'd agree that it's his masterpiece. As much as I love his body of work this is the one that sticks in my mind. Even including that end song for millenium actress that lives in my head rent free.😢
The first comics in woo magazine is drawn by a french artist Georges Pichard, Paris in the 60's and 70's. He is absolutely one of my favorites from that time.
Thank you very much for attending the Brave and Bold event and I hope you had a blast. The original page you picked up is from "Chichi no Tamashii (The father's spirit)" by Hiroshi Kaizuka. The manga was actually serialized in Shonen Jump magazine back in the late 60's. You really got yourself a piece of Japanese manga classic. so congrats to you.
Thanks for the Plug , Waiting on another order from Japan Book Hunter !! shipping is expensive so I make the books I grab count but very worth it , expanded my knowledge further than I ever imagined , the horror stuff is something i have to grab soon
Visiting Takayuki Takeya's studio!? Grand wizard for damn sure. If I'm in Japan and I see an action figure designed by him, I scoop it up. That's my rule.
That Ninja cover art was also used (but not exactly the same) in the album jacket of the punk rock band The Stalin's "虫" (insect). ua-cam.com/video/jHTta1apUJE/v-deo.html
They don’t mention it in the video, but the series that Ed got (that was released by Viz) is actually a sequel/spinoff to the original Kamui Den, which went by the name Kamui Gaiden but was published under the name “Legend of Kamui”…which is what the original title means. Confused? That’s only because it’s needlessly complicated. 😅 The original is what just got licensed by Drawn & Quarterly, not the spinoff.
Matagi Gunner i think you guys mentioned the artist that does it in an episode from a month or so back? I went and looked at that young guys art and its GREAT hes so good at so young. Itndoesnt feel like a manga thats for sure, but it definitely feels interesting and i could see it as a movie series
You opening that new shonnen jump blew my mind the paper quality in the Japanese version compared to when it was published in America is strikingly different. I had to grab one of my copies to make sure I wasn't tripping lol

These manga haul videos are my favorite Cartoonist Kayfabe episodes. Such cool books that I would never see otherwise!
19:59 That's Georges Pichard artwork
Paranoia Agent is a 13 issues series, Satoshi kon´s master piece IMHO.

and it's written by Wolinski, who was murdered in the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
Great haul, Ed. As someone posted, these episodes are Cartoonist Kayfabe favorites / highlights. Can't wait for Jim to join in on the quest.
In Woo #4 the cool as F art "Paulette" is by Georges Pichard (1920 - 2003) a French artist

Yo flipping through the 1st book 🤣🤣🤣
I’m loving the older manga. 8:00 and 18:00 really nice acquisitions.
The book with the cartoonish black pup at 8:00 is one of the _Norakuro_ books by Suihō Tagawa. Beautiful stuff.

Kamui English printing also recently announced

Whoa this is great news! And someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the original has a scratchier, more iconic style than the sequel.
RIP Ed
That Woo magazine needs its own episode
Damn... the blue ink and faded newsprint of the spiderman manga... awesome stuff!
This was a great haul and has me rethinking my approach to my own art.

27:41 on the first page, it looks like there is a message for Ed. As it reads To Ed-san. Sorry, but that is also as far as my translation skills go.
