- We've opened our house, gardens and Wildlands for the season and wanted to share an update of how the first month went! Plus, a very cool Mapperton Baseball Cap offer (Julie will be wearing one during this LIVE) and our plans for more restoration work.. because it NEVER ends when you run a Historic House!
The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Viscount and Viscountess Hinchingbrooke 👑👑
I really do enjoy all your Mapperton videos. My family, Stockton (Stocktun) originally came from the area of Chester and owned a manor house with the villiage of Malpas. Our family migrated to the US during the Civil War because we support Charles 1. In essence we escaped to America. When Charles II came to power we were asked to come back but my ancestor declined. His son, Richard Stockton, was the signer of the Declaration of Independence for the state of New Jersey. Anyway, our manor house near Malpas has disappeared but when I was in England I was able to visit the beautiful Chapel that is still maintained/preserved. It was quite a hike through fields. Thank you for allowing me to live the aristocratic life through your videos.
Hello Richard Stockton descendent! I live in the town of your ancestors in NJ which boasts a Stockton Street, home to the colonial era historic residence, Morven.
Hi Marjorie thanks for the comment. Last time I saw Morven it was under renovation.
I LOVE our old families. I'm glad you stayed. God Bless.
If I only had half of Julie's energy 😂😂😂
As an American, it’s hilarious to me that the British don’t want to drive an hour for a day trip! We’ve regularly driven day trips that are 3 hours one way. People in my area in commute 2.5 hours one way to jobs in DC. It’s just what you do. All that said, I’d totally drive an hour to visit Mapperton were I fortunate enough to live in an hour’s proximity especially for the opportunity to meet its lovely caretakers.
One, country size and road type. Two global warming.
Very true. Sadly, most of the US infrastructure was built in the post WWII years with an emphasis on rebuilding the economy through shoring up the automotive industry that was instrumental in the war effort. Most of Americans live in the rural and suburban areas that lack sufficient public transportation to get anywhere. Unless you live in NYC or Boston or one of the other large metros that have strong train systems, you are relegated to car travel. It isn’t good for the environment and we are slowly moving toward electric vehicles but that support infrastructure is sorely lacking in most places, too. So, in the US, most people drive…out of necessity. PS…I meant no disrespect to the UK, it is one of my favorite places. I was just pointing out the contrast in habits. 🦋
Oh my gosh, Julie you must come and talk @ the Lake Forest History Museum. Alberta’s family home was once on Lake Rd in Lake Forest. The residents would love this Julie. Jen & I live near by & would love meeting you as well. ❤️
How lucky you both are to have one another💙❤️
Your rewilding group covering 4000 hectares is tiny compared to some of the Outback cattle stations in Australia which are over 4000 km squared! But well done Luke for starting the group. Our earth needs to have lots of rewilding done to repair the damage we've done to it. Do you have a wildflower meadow in the mix or is that not right for Mapprton's landscape? I love watching Mossy Earth's videos! It's so encouraging to see what is happening to repair landscapes around the world. A rewilding video would be excellent!
Julie I love seeing you pop up on historical documentaries I watch! You are so incredibly knowledgeable and your enthusiasm shines through every time!
I love watching your videos repairing the house and what's going on! I love history and nature repair as well as architecture so watching you guys being so positive about it all is incredibly encouraging. Thank you! Fiona in Sydney.
Luke and Julie a rewilding podcast would be awesome. My love for Animals knows no bounds. I will definitely be watching from South Africa!! Julie you never talk about your parents or family or your childhood, what created your interest in old buildings. What do your folks think of what you're doing at Mapperton, they must be really proud. Looking forward to your next video 😊 Need another one of your Italian house too 😀
Loved you on The Ladies of London! So very happy to have found you here and I am obsessed! Spent 4 years in Woodbridge, England at RAF Bentwaters and have never stopped loving England!!! Still friends with all of our British neighbors !!!! So impressed how you are marketing your astonishing lineage and castle! Wow!!!!
a wedding venue at mapperton must be just gorgeous - and pictures in the gardens would be incredible! you look so cute in your new baseball hats.
I would be watching it as I love watching nature videos along with gardens, old houses, but I do enjoy it when you do videos on the outdoors.
Huge YES to a rewilding channel!😄🎉🙏👏👏👏❤❤❤
I remember Hello magazine from when I lived in Germany for many years! So congratulations to you both for the great ways you are bringing Mapperton to the forefront!🌟❤️🌟
A live look at the house would be worth an hours drive alone. It looks like a movie set. My cousins 600 year old English cottage with a thatch roof attracts the same feeling and comments .from visitors. Luckily her dad updated all the plumbing and wiring when she bought it. This was no mean feet since the walls are six feet thick in some places! I enjoy your different presentations and I will try to drag her to an activity at Mapperton next time I visit her. . I know she will love the history..
I think you both have been amazing custodians of Mapperton implementing so many different ideas to make an impact on keeping Mapperton alive for future generations. You each have your strengths and abilities to make these ideas become reality. I love every vlog you post and your enthusiasm for every project. You both exude genuine passion for Mapperton . Luke your parents must be so proud of all that you & Julie have achieved especially during some of the world’s most challenging time “The Pandemic “ . Out of that you’ve created a whole new way of spreading the word of Mapperton around the world 🌍 Bravo to you both. You make a remarkable team! Thanks for everything you share. From me in Australia 🇦🇺
I think one way to support the rewilding project would be to have low cost subscriptions to wildlife cams ❤ And again - best thing that ever happened to this family - the get up and go of this family! Oh yes more cottages please! So more people can come and stay and use your property as a jumping off point ! 🎉 and wedding parties can rent out the whole kit and kaboodle 🎉
Julie I love your turtle neck jumper. Returning the land to it's natural state is a massive task, and absolutely brilliant.
I love it too, pearls are great with it too, but I now what that same jumper
Hobbits - low tech lifestyle humanoids can help revive the wild.
I would love a tee with the portrait behind you on it. Could have lettering “Hanging around at Mapperton”. You could make limited editions of art Tees and put out quarterly so we could collect them.
What is better than watching the two of you laughing together? Nothing! Love you both so much! Continued success and many blessings to you and your family.‼️
Julie has done so much to enable her husband to get self confidence😊
For a rewilding channel, have this West Dorset group do it on the group, all the participants, what everyone is doing with this wonderful grant. Of course, keep us up to date on Nestor's tortoise, Woody + Twiggy, piggies, ponies, and such on Mapperton.
It surprised me to learn that people could only marry at church or Registry office until the 90s! So many people are not affiliated with a church but want a pretty venue in which to celebrate their wedding. So nice you can offer this.
You two are just dedicatedly adorable!!! Can’t stop watching your channel. Good luck and hope to visit one day!!! From SUNNY Florida😂😂😂.
Yes, to “wonky” and rewilding.
If it’s going to be doing a lot of raining, find some lovely cozy activity that can only be done in the rain and advertise that: Rainy Day? Come to cozy Mapperton and spend the day.
If you have Luke the viscount and Julie the American viscount, your magazine has made it. They're lucky to have you.
Luke I for sure would love a rewiilding blog. Bravo on all your achievements. Your a gift !
Is really cold in the house - noting Julie in a woolly jumper and gloves on! Btw it was only in England that the law changed about weddings - in Scotland we've always been able to get married wherever we like!
Hi Julie, yes we say the word wonky in America. I like your sofa and the color of the velvet cushions. They’re beautiful. Your sweater almost matches.
Sorry a little early down under here, so we missed the live feed, however it is always a great pleasure Luke and Julie to be able to watch your episode(s) as you are always so cheerful and full of energy for the work you do for the community and the Manor. Thank you once again bringing joy and laughter into our lives. Gob bless, take care 👍😇🏰

I’ve noticed that the word “wonky” has started to be used in the last few years in the states but years ago I never heard the word unless I was listening to a British movie, etc.

Will do!!
Wonky is commonly used where I live in the mid-Atlantic area of the US 🙂
Hello from East Tennessee
Love the show
It would be wonderful to have a tour of the gardens and ur greenhouse. I was on the Google maps and looking at the pictures and seen the gorgeous greenhouse that I've never seen in any of the videos.
I don't know if you will see this but the Biltmore House in NC would be a perfect place to host your Alberta AI project. It's the largest privately owned house in the US located in Asheville, NC.
I've said "wonky" for quite some time now, probably nearly three decades. I may have picked it up from "Changing Rooms" on BBC America, but I don't know. I think part of the joy of an old home is that nothing squares up. The only "old" homes I've lived in were California wood frame homes from the earlier part of the 20th century, but even then nothing was square anymore. Delightful, though. I forget what this Mapperton room is called, but it is absolutely beautiful, and so homey and comfortable looking.
One British expression I've come across often (In British Novels) is "Shut your Gob"! It gets me every time I see it 😋 I wonder if anyone says that anymore?
@@dragonfly9209 😆😆😆 Such a good one!!!
The lamp shade is eavesdropping
A dedicated rewilding channel? Yes, please!
Love an update thank you 😊
I’m off to get a copy of Hello ! Can’t wait to get it.
Fun Quiz night!
Julie, things have changed since you moved to the UK. WONKY is a large part of the vernacular now. At least in my California circle. Luke, could we please have an update on the beavers?
Yes!!! absolutely start a new channel on re- wilding !,, You will have many subscribers… Will you also feature your own farm animals? I was wondering about Theo your new , little, baby, goat whose rejected him 😔.
You should bring your Alberta exhibition to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. They love that kind of thing at the museum.
Oh my goodness! I would go to that!
I completely agree! Biltmore does a lot of collaborations.
In Boston we say things like wonky, dodgy, wicked….some of those very British descriptors.
Enjoy your videos!! From USA.. New Hampshire ..I would love to be a patron but I'm on a fixed income and barely getting by!! Thank you!😊
The hats are absolutely brilliant! I enjoy being a Hogarth Patreon and always look forward to your videos. You’re so creative with your ideas. Kudos to you from Plattsburg Missouri. I have just watched your AV video and can’t wait to support you on buy me a coffee. The AI with Alberta is absolutely AMAZING!
Philly in the house
Yes I’d be up for the pub quiz night. Already do weekly Guardian quiz averaging about 30% and NYT’s where I do better. Perhaps if you started at about 2PM your time here in NA we’d be able to attend at 10PM?
(what you did in your garden yesterday Dug)
I enjoy the videos about the recovery of the environment in Mapperton. They are very informative.
I'm with you, Julie. Nineteen degrees is chilly. What is perfect? Twenty-two (71.6 F for the unconverted). Lovely update as always. 💖
From Eureka town on the northern california coast.
Watching from SE Texas. We recently had too much rain here.
I was wondering if you could make some of your special videos free that we can all enjoy them? I hope you can make a few new foraging videos also? I'm so happy for you both and your family! Congratulations Julie on your new ventures🎉! Luke, great job with rewilding! So happy to see the beautiful eagles back!!!!❤🎉Julie, I agree with you regarding temperature! I married a Canadian and I'm always cold, too! ❤I hope John and Caroline are doing well!!!! Hugs to all of you! So happy to see the Alberta exhibition!
Love the rewilding! I would love to learn more.
Hello from Wixom Michigan, I’m back home from North Carolina . The wisteria is beautiful and so are your eagles back in their perches.
Love the map idea!
Volunteers as tour guides- garden help etc
Wildlife cams would be awesome. There is an Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald TN that has cams set up everywhere. No one can visit it, but it’s fun to watch the Elephants go about their day. You could do the Beavers, Ponies, Cows and pigs!
Love watching your show from Daytona Beach, Fl.
Definitely use wonky in Canada!
We have Hello Canada and it’s pretty popular here
I say wonky ALL the time! 😂. And I am an American living in Montana. 🤠
We have Hello in Canada. Look forward to seeing it. Love this episode
Hello from Katy, Texas! I so enjoy all your videos. ❤ And, yes we say “wonky” here. 😊
