Stood 3ft in front of Hooky in a small Aussie Pub on Sydney North Shore back in 85 as New Order played a secret warm up gig for their Tour ... place was packed - they played all the early New Order songs and a few Joy Div tracks ... there was no stage riser so the band were on the same level as the punters ... classic night.
I am so proud I own the original 1st press vinyl of PCL, it is an absolute treasure in my record collection. I really do understand Peter Hooks pride and would agree with his comparisons against Lowlife and Brotherhood. PCL is easily one my favourite albums of all time.
true, those two tracks stand out a mile, the rest of the album isn't great. In fact, even though they are one of my fav bands, they have never been an album band for me
I love those two, too. But my favourite is 'Leave Me Alone'. Maybe because that's the least 'Power, Corruption & Lies' song on the album... well, dunno. Vocal, guitars, bass, drums and a modest synth. A great Dance of Melancholy.
the bass guitar is great on this, such a simple song. his singing is all out of tune but somehow it doesn't matter. The version of 586 live at Bestival sounds great
@@LegPuppy Same feeling here. They've recorded some fantastic stand-alone singles and have had an equal amount of great singles lifted from albums. But New Order haven't released one album that I can listen to from start to finish. "Low-Life," "Brotherhood" and "Technique" come closest to perfection, but each one of those have at least two, probably three songs I can't sit through.
Just about done with his New Order book. Superb stories, can't put it down. Amazing how he can recall such detail. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.
The more humble beginnings and demise of Joy Division being able to bank that jump to expensive synths made the New Order sound and sincerity that much better than many of the other bands at the time.
I don't remember being that impressed with Power Corruption and Lies when it came out, after the Temptation 82 remix and Fac 73 hype it seemed more introspective and didn't have the atmosphere of Movement, will need to listen to it again with new ears. Nice interview
Considering the direction New Order took with the electronics, and the influence they've had on dance/electronica i love that one of Hooky's tattoos features the word MIDI !!!
Movement a Joy Division album with New Order singing, hmm maybe that’s why Movement to me is their best album as a piece. Not saying that their later albums did not have moments of excellence, they did, but as an album I don’t think they ever bettered Movement. Right will whip out my copy of Power now and have a listen.
By Hook or by Crook, Blue Monday was touched by the magic wand of genius. Indeed that music tech was way out of reach of many normal people in the 1980's. I could afford only one item, an Akai S612+MD280, I think the LM1 was £7000 which was price of a house. I think even Jim Kerr of Simple Minds said the music tech they bought at that same time was huge money, jokingly he said almost making them bankrupt .
I need to sleep otherwise I'd bang it on & go jogging, invigorating album. Dunno about the Low Life comment, overall I may like LL more than PC&L which is a toughy because they are both stellar, timeless albums.
o_0 iii That would have gone against the whole Factory ethic: never be businesslike; never make money. A sad state of affairs, because their aesthetics and A&R were exceptional.
Not my fave record. But Age of Consent, Your SIlent Face and Leave me Alone are amazing to this day and IMHO are the true breeders of what NO would become right after. And 4:56 the voice he makes when he quotes himself tho xD
Hooky goes into detail in his book about how little Gillian contributed until they got to the making of Republic. Even then, many of her contributions were axed by Barney. If not for Hooky’s bass pieces, Blue Monday would have been entirely a Barney and Steve creation.
@@No-to4id Hooky would forge Ians Signature but he only did it when signing new order albums i.e. albums made after Ian died. You gotta be kinda stupid to think that there's a copy of power, corruption and lies signed by Ian Curtis
He obviously feels very deeply about the band and his contribution. In some people, their upset (loss) surfaces as seemingly endless negativity towards the people involved, but it's an expression of loss. He has every reason to be very proud of his achievements.
Why the fuck don’t the original members of new order do a new order plays joy division songs tour? I’m sure Ian and Debbie wouldnt mind.people can be stupid
New Order sounds bad live. Even if Hooky came back, it wouldn't fix Summner's drunken pirate voice. he is done. They'd sound better with a spot on karaoke singer.
Hooky is a great bassist...but was very immature in the early days...like when Ian died..."id rather go to the pub!...err? And he got blown out by his mrs...and left the band but wants to go back??? Sounds like Roger ego trip Waters!!!
When he says " it's a fantastic record "
He isn't being conceited, arrogant or lying. It is a fantastic record. Peter Hook=genius
probably the best new order album.
@@pusanghalaw it is
@@warpdag best earlier album. I think Technique great too
Information, not validation
It took me 35 years to realise that PC&L is not only New Order's best work (by some distance), but one of the best albums of all time.

The Velo In The Vale You lucky, lucky chap.
You ucky ucky basterd- Monty Python
Were you two years early? Place was packed...a few Joy Div tracks ....? lol
100% spot on regarding description of Power, Corruption & Lies... Best overall record from the lot
buddy belk I mean he had a very important part in making the damn record so I'd think he'd know the best way to express his thoughts on it
@@chrissie9865 lol wow
I can’t help but love Hooky. He’s just such an interesting person to listen to.
great musician too
Great interviews with Hook. The whole series is insightful and fantastic. Thanks for posting.
Digital and Ceremony are my favorite songs by this guy. Music was never the same after they came.
One of the greatest albums ever made
He's so right, it's their best album. Beautiful, liberating and wildly exciting.
I MET HOOKY IN 1996 IN THE HACIENDA. I WAS ON E AT THE TIME. GREAT NIGHT.
Of course u were lol

My favorite New Order record. Definitely.

J. Montrice Ceremony is a Joy Division song

Absolute brilliance!
Actually when I think of the album I would suggest to someone just experiencing New Order - I'd pick P,C&L it is a perfect album.
Almost funny. The more copies they sold the more money they lost. Sad but true.
Their financial mismanagement is a wonder to behold. Wait til you get to how they were locked into the Hacienda.
Life is Ironic!
Its worth 50k for the story. True (piss) Artists
My favorite New Order record for sure...

once "Blue Monday" became a reissued hit, why not charge 20p more for the vinyl record? Factory "lost" money on purpose, as "art".
