Don't use cotton makeup pads, use A4 paper trimmed into strips. Excess cotton makeup pad can clog the heads. A4 paper won't burr or snag on the coiled heads. Rotate anticlockwise as well.
They don't use cotton because the fibers will get trapped in the heads, this can cause irreparable damage to the video head.
You can use cotton on everything in the VCR, but the video head, use either a small cut of printer paper or a microfiber cloth with a few drops of IPA.
If you go through the trouble to disassemble and clean it you want to do it right so your VCR lasts, don't be so rough with it.
Some people suggest using printer paper and alcohol. Some suggest chamois swabs and alcohol. You can use cotton in the rollers. Just don’t use them on the video heads.

Omg I brought a vhs player yesterday and I was wondering on how to clean it people say do not use cotton buds on the vhs hed but It works thay say it fucks up the vhs hed I don't believe that
Any cleaning will work...until you bugger it up by snagging it. It's not exactly difficult to get a piece of paper anyway.

Yeah for real. This is also too much work. I just watched another video half the length of this one and the guy just put in a VHS cleaning tape and that’s all you need to do. This guy’s video turned me off immediately for the same reason.
