I swear... a single 917 is louder than an entire modern-day F1 starting grid. God I'm almost crying. That is the best sounding car that has ever existed, and will stay that way forever.
+CookProductions1 dude... it's hard not to when I fell in love with f1 during the monstrous V10 era. Those were I'm my opinion the greatest ever. And hey, if you want I'll also bash on modern day LMP cars. The previous comments applies just as well to the LMP1 Category
+CookProductions1: F1 crashed & burned a long time ago. It started when drivers got stupid behind the wheel & more changes to rules and circuits (chicanes and long time European venues dropped off the calendar for dictatorship countries). I'm glad in my day, the only stupid things were the Caesar's Palace GP, Detroit GP, Dallas GP and the Jones vs Piquet/Reutemann soap opera. Unlike all this 'handbags at dawn' stuff the media has hyped up like a bunch of Hollywood gossip columnists.

As a teenager at Daytona, just after the 24 hours finish, I had a 5 litre Gulf Porsche 917 roll by me in the pits. The sound and vibration of that motor were like no other. My entire body resonated from the low frequency growl.
Hi Bill! Was there too when I was a teenager. Such an exciting race!! At the time I didn’t realize the history I was watching. We’re you at Sebring too? I loved that track because I could get so close to the action.
No rev limiter , no paddle shifting , no computer onboard, just good engineering , with raw brutal hp. And a driver that knows how to make it all work.
+Im a Fox That's all manual, heal-toe shifting you're hearing. Unfortunately, manuals are much slower than paddles and now even automatics, and both do the rev-matching for you, so there is no need for heal-toe, therefore no amazing downshifts. It's slower, so that's why it is not used anymore. However, the most raw downshifts of modern racers hands down go to the Maserati Trofeo MCs.
Can't figure why downshift so early, under heavy braking. Does no good, only beats on engine. Back when, with iffy brakes, common practice to "stretch rods" like that.
Cars nowadays have automatic and sequential or semi-atumatic gear boxes etc etc. Back then gear boxes were pretty rustic. The revving helped speed up the cogs when down shifrting and save exploding the gear box and shredding the clutch. Cars aren't all about engines and noises like the marketing people would like to have you believe.
Spooling up the synchro's with a blip from the throttle, good old engine/trans communication, right? Something sorely missing to some extent today, obviously. - no comment needed for Formula E! -
I hung on the front straight fence at Daytona and watched the likes of Pedro Rodriquez and Jo Siffert turn up out of the infield and take their Gulf Porsche 917s up through the gears, through the banking, and down the back stretch. The ground shook. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I could listen to this sound all day.
Lucky you Gil! Living nearby I practically grew up at Daytona, but sadly the 917(my absolute favorite) was before my time 6 or 7 yrs. But DID get to witness those glorious 935's making cool noises of their own & spitting flames like angry dragons! 962's as well. For so little noise God they were fast - zooming around Daytona like a Jetsons cartoon!
Heard one last year going full throttle at a classic car show. The sound was just insane. You could feel it in your body and that thing accelerated like a rocket. Unbelievable
That engine makes the meanest, most evil roar I've ever heard. I mean, it's so bad it actually scares me. It's alive and it's pissed. What a fantastic machine, which only Porsche could build.
Raiden HQ The original comment is about the sound, not the displacement, the horsepower figures, or number of cylinders. “Alive and pissed” definitely describes the BRM too. Who cares how you make the sound?! Also, you’re probably thinking of the Can/Am version horsepower figures, the NA version was probably half that.

The sound of the 917 has had me enthralled since 1969. The Ferrari's of the era had great sound too, but the 917 just hit a guttural, masculine note. It is a sound unique to the 917, regardless of motor (though the 12 cylinder motors were the epitome). I'm fortunate to have heard them all in the glory days.
I’m 64 and this thing makes things tingle down under…. without a doubt, the greatest race car ever created by humans, nothing even came close for the period that it was made, it was 20 years ahead of its time!!!! Porsche!!! by the way, it’s a two syllable word!!!!

I'm not a Porsche fan but this car is unbelievable, engine has the perfect muscle sound but with some high rev tone to it as well. Props to the camera man
The world probably won't run out of fossile fuel anytime soon (or if it does, they will make petrol from crops or whatever) BUT if one day, the sad thing does happen, and our grandchildren run out of fuel to burn, I want them to do this: Use the last 100 liters in a 917K! Seriously, there is no better way to celebrate the internal combustion engine!
Let's just agree to disagree and say that if we ran out of fuel, there would be chaos at local race tracks housing classic cars and airfields with vintage aircraft, because there is no one right vehicle to burn it in...

I was lucky enough to talk with David Piper at the Porsche OPC in Bristol UK and see his two 917's and " baby" Porsche with the 996 style headlights. Amazing man with some great stories
My goodness gracious! This just does something to a man...ya know you feel it deep within your loins. It’s just a beautiful thing here, folks. Mans love affair with highly tuned internal combustion engines.
The 917 made the best sound to ever leave a tailpipe. It is my favorite Porsche. That is saying a lot since Porsche has all of my favorite cars...Porsche just magnificent!
Oh my freaking God. Amazing sound. I want more!!! Thanks to an owner that will push this car to close to the limit. Others won't even think of pushing it this hard.
Racing and Porsche test drivers used to get out of this car and say their neck hurt for 2 days afterwards because the acceleration was so brutal and savage. Thanks again for posting this video of a classic racer. Great to see the rarely seen Porsche heritage on the track in all its glory.
This needs to be sent to Bernie Ecclestone as F1 is a disaster this year. Hybrid V6 turbos are a joke. You will never get the sound back of the old transmissions where you had to heel-toe and double clutch in order to downshift into the corners, but they can make the engines sound great once again. There is nothing that sounds better than 12 cylinders (or 10) at full song. What an incredible car and motor!!!! Thank you for the upload.
Hybrid is the future buddy. And forget about proper H pattern manual gearboxes. Paddle shifters with automated clutch is what all modern 2014 race cars have.
Just imagine, the drivers feet and legs sit in front of the cars main suspension. Any frontal impact would result in possible serious injury or death for the driver, but still an amazing legend.
Guys; get your facts straight before you post. This is the 917K which produced 580 hp in 1970 and about 620 in 1971. It is not the 1100 hp 917/30 CanAm car. The 917/30 never raced in Europe.
+TheThirdMan, I think the 917/30 (917/30 TC from what i've read/heard) raced in the interserie (Europe) along with the 917/10 in 1974 for example. I could be wrong but i think they did for a few years.
The main reason it dominated racing wasn't because of it's great horsepower. It dominated because it was darn near unbreakable. Endurance racing is not just about going fast. It is also important to go long time.
I swear... a single 917 is louder than an entire modern-day F1 starting grid. God I'm almost crying. That is the best sounding car that has ever existed, and will stay that way forever.
+Juan Alvarez I love how even on a video that has no relevence towards f1, you still find an excuse to bash the engine sound.

Racecars today don't have that small nuclear explosion on up shifts anymore
Tyler Russell They also don't drop the atomic bomb anymore when they downshift. So sad :'( ...........................RIP Golden Era

Absolutely AWESOME. Probably the greatest race car ever built. Thanks for posting.
Deceleration sounds glorious with the throttle blips. ngh...
The Gulf 917 and Rothmans 956 Le Mans monsters...surely this was the best decade to be a race car driver in...
Those gear changes are glorious!
This is fantastic! Thank you.
Good sound ,good editing ,That's what a Race Car sounds like !
O.O that fucking gear shift eargasm
Ok, I'm calling it: this is the best sounding car I have ever heard.
Just imagine, the drivers feet and legs sit in front of the cars main suspension.
Any frontal impact would result in possible serious injury or death for the driver, but still an amazing legend.
The 1960's and 70's was the best era in racing, never again will we see the cars and racing venues like that again.
TheThirdMan its every year at Jim Clark Revival/ Hockenheim Classic. I saw it two times.
The main reason it dominated racing wasn't because of it's great horsepower. It dominated because it was darn near unbreakable.
Endurance racing is not just about going fast. It is also important to go long time.
Down shifts sound like they’re gonna tear it apart, brutal and wonderful
