  • On this Mac McAnally Interview: Getting his start singing & playing piano in the Baptist Church in small town Mississippi, and then suddenly playing honky-tonks... at age 13! The serendipity of how his first record got made, at age 17 because the studio artist booked for the day never showed up. His affinity for Muscle Shoals, music as “joyful noise” & why “joy records as well as sharps & flats”... Playing with Jimmy Buffet (GREAT story), Levon Helm, Roy Orbison, George Straight, Hank Jr., Keith Whitley… Living in his “bonus round,” a horrible business contract story, the backstory of tracks on Once In A Lifetime, food, friends, family, music and more. AWESOME convo!

As a Parrot head, I had known Mac for his work with Jimmy...but have just in the last two years (perhaps because of his humility and non-self promoting attitude) learned how prolific his career is and am totally blown away at the songs he had wrote that other artists made famous and the cavalcade of stars he worked with. His work is phenomenal! Thank you Mac! 😊

Saw Mac at Fulton Chapel at ole miss as a student. He was solo and I was fatigued. When I walked out of the chapel, I recall thinking 'everything thing is gonna be okay '. It was such a beautiful performance and sincere sharing of love. A moment of change as regarding to what's this 'life' thing about. Clearly the life thing question was quite a bit answered by this amazing human. Seriously grateful is the spot we reside in due to this guy and his offerings. What a gift he is.

I'm from MS about an hour south of Belmont and u didn't know about Mac until I told my dad I was going to see JB back in 2010. Dad was excited about me seeing Mac more than JB. My dad was a huge music lover, but he loved John Prine more than anything. I grew up with him playing the guitar and singing all the john Prine songs. I learned then that Mac was another artist that he loved almost as much as he loved John Prine. Thank you, Mac, for being an inspiration to my dad and sharing these amazing memories with us. And thank you for your part in so many timeless songs by our our most loved artist. I'm sure you helped make the what they are.

I ran across this interview/podcast and all I can say is, "Wow!" My knowledge of Mac was only from digging into Jimmy Buffett's catalog after his death earlier this month. I knew he surrounded himself with great people/musicians, and Mac is just 100% proof of that. He's so down to earth and honest; humble, and yet one hell of a musician! What I'm learning about songwriters is that they're excellent storytellers. Mac is no slouch, that's for sure. And that has to be what brought him and Jimmy Buffett together. It was just meant to be. Thanks for a great interview, and for opening up my mind a little more.

What an amazing man and talent. Like a lot of people I became aware of Mac because of his association with JB, but his talent was always something that made me wonder why he was a sideman. His story is truly crazy. His charm and humility is something to behold. Love his stories about his family and upbringing. I hope he continues and as a side gig maybe continues to keep the spirit of Jimmy going. Literally the universe ordained him to play.

What an outstanding interview! I'm now a huge fan as of about September of this year! My car blew a gasket and fried the motor. Little Mazda 2 I'd had for 10 years so I got railroaded into a high karate Buick with Sirius radio. I was testing it out and said, "play Margaritavulle" in honor of Jummy. I was so sad he passed! Lo and behold there's a whole radio station dedicated to it! I been listening to all the concerts ever since. I hate I missed out on Jimmy. I had no idea. I'm 48 but man I love Mac and all the rest! Especially knowing he's that honest! I once called the police on myself!😂Have a great day and God bless!

The stories about his experiences of working with Artists and with his family and friends reminds me of my youth when I was in the mountain with my Granda cutting the Turf in Ireland and the people would gather around a fire to make the Tea, boil eggs and just tell stories, wonderful days except when the midges came out.

Gentlemen this was one heck of a Cool and great Interveiw i’m laughing because i come from a very big Italain Family and we do have some very talented Musicians that have had individual levels of Success that deserve it all but they all have had the Rock and Roll Dream of making It then i listen to this story he is like oh at best i’m a mediocre Piano player got shoved into a studio at 13 and Bam the other guys. force me to cut a demo that Skyrockets like it did then later on he is playing for and with one of the most Successfull Groups i this Country and one of my favorites as well. Jimmy Buffett. that’s Success in the music Industry ! not just forthe hits he has had but more importantly damn. talk about Longevity incidentally It’s My Job is one of my all time favorite songs i honestly. did a job i worked my Ass off for over 35 years which was Commercial Woodworking and honest truth i loved what i did but kept that song playing looped in my brain for years. it helped that i did graduate highschool in Hollywood Florida and then lived for 30 something in Maryland raising my children and working plus having a boat on the Chesapeake Bay where even my Boss used to shake his head in Wonder. all you Boater guys and Fishing Buddies stick together don’t YAwl ? he used to say i’ll never. get it how much money you guys throw into that Hobby and Pastime just to have a Fish you can buy at the Grocery Store. i was always that’s not the Point it’s a Lifestyle i lived on a 48 foot Sailing Yacht in the Bahamas and we had Sirius Radio one weekend we had to swing on the Hook for a few extra nights to let some weather get ahead of us to cross the Gulfstream back over to Florida ! i did contact my Boss via Satalite phone we had on loan and i called to update him i may be a few days behind getting home he was like are you guys okay with the weather and i’m like Dude don’t get me wrong i jumped into the Carribean Ocean with a bar of soap this morning scrubbed up and pulled a pair of swimming trunks on to sit on the swim platform to rinse off with fresh water and i’m sitting in a Hammock watching Women riding around us on Rental Jet Skis in Bikinis and i’m sucking on Rum drinks. listening to Margarittaville radio yeah we’re good. i got a case of Kruzane rum hidden in the engine compartment to thank everyone at the Shop for letting me do this !

Wow. $250/week. My one and only pro job back in 1982 was $50/week (which I've never actually been paid) and required me to be at practices for the current set and to practice on my own for the next two weeks' sets of songs. I was ONLY paid for the performances and not the practice time which represented at least three times as much. Whatever, it was cool to be paid to play music. Y'know. Or to have been promised to be paid to play.

It was odd to me - years ago now- to ‘discover’ Mac was so much bigger than the most available optic of him being longterm with Jimmy Buffett. And Jimmy did his part to expose that- true.
But what interests me most in this interview isn’t that big presence in the music business but rather the undertone or theme of intent. The deeper aspects of morals seem reflected by his philosophy or his societal context. However, when one observes his humility and gratefulness with even a little bit of intellectual contemplation you realize that his anecdotes, quotes, and comparative analyses are merely a means of explaining that his character and moral compass is in fact reflected by his composure and philosophy.
In a day and world where it is often said that “morals change” and ‘old’ definitions of cultural norms are outdated dogma or outdated constraints on freedom it refreshing and very up to date to see one of those standout successes defy contemporary thinking and continue succeeding in later life without adjusting his underlying moral compass.
Many in the younger crowd could benefit from that example; thinking deeper than the moment, eschewing moral liquidity, and being others-focused would bring some hope and aid in the healing our shipwrecked post-modern culture.
