  • Homeowners in Altadena are worried that their insurance coverage will not be enough to ensure their homes are safe to live in after the devastating Eaton Fire. Residents said their insurance only covers debris removal but not cleaning expenses.

    If my home survived a fire and needs to be cleaned. I'm cleaning it.
    I'll buy a respirator and get the things out. If my family and friends want to help thats great. If not, I'm still doing it.
    New mattresses, Get clothing washed. Fans, open everry window. Have a carpet cleaning company come in and clean the carpets. Wet vac the sofa's.
    Replace the roof insulation if needed.
    Respirator. Shop vac's.
    Damn, crying and complaining is not how things are done.
    GET TO WORK !!.

    We were out of our house for 2 months after the Thomas fire. Fighting AAA insurance was a PITA (they covered 50k of 80k damage). Do NOT attempt to clean this on your own. All surviving homes needed a deep clean and attic insulation replacement.

      @lorrainespear1210 8 днів тому +8

      @keemburrleh Yes we ended up fixing the last 30k over time. Weird things like insurance was only going to pay to paint the worst 2 sides of the house even though all of it was bubbling/falling off. The front door was damaged but we couldn't prove the stain failure was heat related (it was). Everything was a fight, 500 dollars to replace insulation in a 2,400 sq ft house 🤡. Right after the fire they offered 1,500 if we'd sign off. We had windows that the frame shrunk and the glass shattered, 1,500 barely covers cost of a window. We lucked out and SCE removed 2 giant burned eucalyptus which would have been 5k...though SCE equip started the fire

    Here in the Carolinas, we are only now seeing the insurance and state adjusters, 6 years later, finally agree to fund repairs for prior events. The Ashville NC issue is stuck in the House with huge underfunding and insurance companies arguing if your house missing from the property qualifies as damaged. Katrina, Fort Mayers, Puerto Rico, etc... Should be a clue to how long it takes! Don't hire a cleaner or clean yourself, WAIT! The community will take months if not years to re-string poles, re-pressurize the water, gas lines and finally inspect sewage. They need to cap-off any leaking to prevent hazards. You will have vehicles coming and going for years lifting the dust back up from the construction cleanup and disposal while re-dusting your home inside and out. It may suck, but pay your mortgage and wait about 18 months to 2 years? I would empty the house and Ring camera the place to prevent squatters. You need the environment to be safe before returning, unless you want to sleep with a breathing mask. Your cost will be crazy for remediation of your home, once the supply issue is realized, also, the vultures who want to low ball you for the property my stop hounding you by then.

    So you're paying for a mortgage on a home you can't safely live in, and you have to pay rent to live elsewhere until your house is cleaned up. In California, it kind of makes more sense to just be a renter and get renter's insurance.

    People are funny. They're worried about the ash. One woman says the insurance is going to cover the neighborhood air quality! Meanwhile, they don't understand why insurance companies are pulling out of California. here was extensive flooding in low income neighborhoods in San Diego a couple of years ago. The water had all sorts of contaminants in it, including raw sewage. People were shoveling out their own homes and cleaning them up. If my home was full of ash and soot, all I'd need is for it to be wiped up very thoroughly with damp rags. California will keep setting absurd requirements and the cost of everything will grow out of control. More insurers will pull out of the state. Pretty soon your dog will have an accident on the carpet and you'll have to bring in a hazmat team. Just wipe down the surfaces with damp rags and get on with it.
