Living in Portland Maine myself, I actually rarely eat lobster out due to the prices. I'm apart of this Facebook group with local fishermen that sell their seafood directly to consumers at $4.99-$5.99/lb without buying from a market. Making your own lobster rolls are so much more satisfying without breaking the wallet. You can also make so much more than just lobster rolls. We just made lobster mac and cheese this week. I think poké bowls with lobster meat is next for us to try!
I have some distant relatives that work on a lobster boat. They supplied the lobster for a family reunion up there. Anyhow, I can’t put a lobster in boiling water and then eat it. Not yet, anyhow.
You would think lobster would be cheaper in Maine but I guess it's controlled by the lobster cartel. Here in Los Angeles restaurants are charging as much as $34 /lb. I am thinking if you travel to Portland and stay at an Airbnb you can buy from the fishermen and cook it yourself, saving a ton of money.
I'm a strictly mayo-based lobster roll person, but Bite Into Maine's picnic style lobster roll changed me forever. I never thought I'd say it. Moxie forever!
I lived in Maine for 14 years and always passed Becky’s Diner, but never went in. After seeing this video, I’m finally going there next time I’m in Portland.
Eventide lobster roll is my favorite in Boston. Never had any other lobster roll in Portland other than J’s Oyster’s and it was the best lobster roll I’ve ever had.
Portland? You might as well be in Massachusetts. Come up to the Mid Coast and ride up and down Route 1. Portland does have a lot of spots along Commercial Street and all of the wharves and piers. I have been meaning to check out Portland Lobster Co.
Quest for the best, I love the catchy title! I appreciate your review of the different styles of lobster rolls. And thank you so much for including the prices! I'm surprised at the large amount of lobster meat in those rolls! Maybe because it's in Maine where they catch it that they can offer so much meat for such a reasonable price... Total YUMMM!!! Now, go take a nap!
I never noticed the prices were on the bottom of the screen bc I was only looking @ the food! Hahahaha!!! I think it looks like a lot of lobster meat bc those buns are so small with the exception of Becky's version. [mouth watering while typing.]
I was going to ask if a lobster roll was essentially a snack to hold you over until the next meal. Any place I have ever been for a roll comes in a bite size option. I get it bc lobster ain't cheap, but still! Lobster is so delicious. You just always want more!!
Lobster rolls go back to the days lobsters were cheap. Later seafood stores made them to use up excess lobsters. You can do the same with any fish. These days fish is too expensive to add mayo and stick it in a roll. Maybe I’d do it with leftovers.
You ranked Portland Lobster Co. number 5 -- but I think that place has the best setting and backdrop off Commercial and against the water out of the restaurants that you mentioned.
I had the burger with lobster on top of it at High Roller. I thought it was crazy spending that much on a burger; But it was the best burger I ever had.
I went to Maine Portland a few months ago with my husband and baby! I wanted to go for the lobster roll, so I finally tried it, but I didn’t like it because it was the food type 😭 I tried it at the Lobster shack at Cape Elizabeth, mannnnnn I wanted a nice and warm one ! But I didn’t try another one at another place since it was already soooo expensive, anyways I can’t wait to go back and try it at these other places ! I’m glad you guys made this video :)!
I lived in Cape Elizabeth for 14 years and the Lobster Shack ones aren’t very good at all. You gotta go to one of these places. Highroller is my personal fav.
Cinema Lights that was on my list also! But after spending so much money on a. Little lobster roll , we didn’t wanna waste more ! Next time fer sure ! Thank you 🥰🥰
For a fair comparison one should NEVER tell the manager/owner ahead of time about reviewing their place. Owner can always cheat and put extra free lobster, condiments, etc just to get a better review.
Eventide was the best lobster roll when this video was made but now there is one even better at Twelve. There is a caveat with Twelve, its part of a four course prix fixe dinner so if you are looking for a roll by itself then Eventide is still the best bet.
OffbeatLook - Beauty and Lifestyle with Camille there’s a mushroom that tastes just like lobster! Expensive though. Check out julien solomitas lobster roll video. He’s a vegan cook 👌🏻
I think it's really funny that vegans won't eat meat but want so much of their foods to taste like meat. And that absurd mushroom has neither the taste nor texture of lobster.
I have enjoyed Eventide's lobster sandwich, it's definitely delicious, I just wouldn't call it a roll, to me if it's not traditional and the restaurant changes the ingredients to make it their own then it's a sandwich. There are soo, soo many great Lobster rolls and sandwich's in Portland, I'de suggest trying them all but my favorite is at home just because I get more for my buck😉
yes, that's the BEST. My son and I did that in Maine. I need to check if they still do that! I cannot afford Portland restaurants. I have never gone to one myself ever and I live here. My son gave me a Panera gift card and I am going to eat their Mac and Lobsta'. That must be great!
Yum. Only been to Portland Maine once and been to the Portland Lobster Co. I also went on the Lucky Catch boat and knew where the lobster came from and they cooked it up over there. So good, can't get much fresher than that.
I’m from Maine and have to say that I’m horrified that anyone would put lettuce or any type of seasoning on or in a lobster roll. They should be simple and let the lobster shine....New England style hotdog bun, lobster and just a tiny bit of mayonnaise to act as a binder THAT’S IT!!!!
Eventide has an excellent reputation; however, I would have disqualified it from the Lobster Roll competition because of the petite size. A LR, in addition to being of excellent quality, should have a minimum of 4 ounces of meat. Nonetheless, it is a fine restaurant.
+1. Eventides is delicious but I feel like it's a different food. Needs 5oz of meat, toasted split top bun. Sincerely, a seasonal lobsterman in Cape Porpoise
I love food reviews, but Dakota needs to understand that when you're doing them with another person, they're entitled to their opinion. Calm down dude! Stop trying to run the show--or do your own show, solo. He comes across like a know-it-all.
The Portland Lobster Co has been around for 12 years. How has that name never been taken??? Seems like a pretty basic name for the area. And putting mayonnaise on it makes it a salad, not a roll. It’s too bad that you got a lobster. Roll at Eventide. Their New England clam bake is the best thing on the menu and the assortment of oysters there are to die for. I would never even think of getting a lobster roll there.

Nods, gotta give the hardworking fishermen some love.
How can I join your lobster group to buy lobsters directly from fishermen?
@Darren Lieu what is the name of your FB group. I want to join and buy me some fresh lobsters. They are so easy to cook at home.
I have some distant relatives that work on a lobster boat. They supplied the lobster for a family reunion up there. Anyhow, I can’t put a lobster in boiling water and then eat it. Not yet, anyhow.

From someone who lives in Portland, all those places are awesome. What a tough choice to make!
Well, I live in Maine and I can confirm that lobster is love, lobster is life.
Yeah, just don’t get pinched
Ken’s has the best lobster rolls by far. Or clam bake
yassss thus is life for us Mainers :)
I will be heading there mid April are most eateries opened?
I'm a strictly mayo-based lobster roll person, but Bite Into Maine's picnic style lobster roll changed me forever. I never thought I'd say it. Moxie forever!
I lived in Maine for 14 years and always passed Becky’s Diner, but never went in. After seeing this video, I’m finally going there next time I’m in Portland.
Yep. When they got to that diner, I said to myself, this is it. Now I'll watch the end of the video and see if I'm right.
So refreshing to watch a video which is about the food instead of the hosts attempting to makes lame jokes and make it about themselves. Great job!
worth it but make it 100x more awkward
"butter is my best friend" Arthur next to him is like "what?" lol
This video was absolutely fun!! I’m on my way to look at more of your videos
I don’t like how that guy dominated the conversation “kindly” he was off putting, and I hate that people have to be like that
Who remembers back when going outside was still a thing
I do.
@Thomas Mcintyre man shut up lol
It is a thing now, but some people aren’t brave enough to do it.
maine is my favorite place ever it’s so beautiful and the food is delicious.

maybe they’re tryna do something similar since steven is leaving buzzfeed
@@aininrusli4211 he is?
They aren’t in Portland in the opener. They are in Cape Elizabeth. The lighthouse is called Portland Headlight, but it is in Cape.
They were right. I went over a year ago, and I never had a better tasting roll/bun..? but agree, should be bigger.
"This is gonna be the roughest night's sleep I've ever had...I live a very easy life" 😂😂😂
Great video . It was enjoyable to watch ! Headed to portland next week !!!!!
seeing them eat the lobster and the juices and butter dripping off- IM SO JEALOUS
I am watching this in December 2020 and I pray that all these lovely, quant, small businesses are still in operation. 🙏
Thank the liberals
Lol
We were in Maine and had the lobster rolls at Highroller and it was amazing. Now I have to go back and try some of these other places :) Thanks guys.
I loved this video. Thank you for making it.
I would so try the Bite into Maine picnic style lobster roll. Yum! 🤤
This was great!!!!! Thank you!!
I ate at Eventide in summer 2017. To this day, their lobster roll is the best meal I ever had in my life.
Its 2am and i feel hungry watching you guys

Rt. 9 Eddington, Maine has the best lobsta rolls around Central Maine. (possibly furtha) hahaha 😂
You two are great. I enjoyed watching this video and hope to visit Maine soon so I could too taste the lobster.
Put the napkins on your lap, gentleman. Etiquette never goes out of style.

A lot of places with good lobster rolls close when summer is over. Also that lighthouse isn't in Portland it's in Cape Elizabeth.
Treiviek 2 with the exception of Portland lobster co all of these places are open year round.
question: is a lobster roll essentially the seafood version of a hotdog
Sydney Kong yes.
yes
Eh, I’d say it’s more the lobster version of tuna or chicken salad but just happens to be served on a hot dog bun
I was going to ask if a lobster roll was essentially a snack to hold you over until the next meal. Any place I have ever been for a roll comes in a bite size option. I get it bc lobster ain't cheap, but still! Lobster is so delicious. You just always want more!!

Finally my hometown ❤️❤️❤️❤️
BECKY’S 😍
She seemed like a delightful woman. I cannot believe she has 6 children. Wonder what her ex is up to...considering she made good with her life.
I dream about the eventide lobster roll! Well deserved #1 spot.
Just got home from Portland ME, why didn’t I see this when I was there 😭

So Portland is like 15 minutes from Old Orchard. If you guys ever go back. Try Kens in old orchard, they have amazing sea food
I had the burger with lobster on top of it at High Roller. I thought it was crazy spending that much on a burger; But it was the best burger I ever had.

Best one is the one you make at home yourself, ayuh...
All of that lobster meat was fresh. I am not killing a lobster in my home.
@@CC-si3cr Yo don't need to kill it. You just boil it. The one in your roll was boiled as well....

Lettuce does not belong on a lobster roll, just my opinion. My favorite way to have it lately, is with a lemon, dill mayo sauce.

actually a traditional Maine roll is with Butter and Mayo.
A lobster roll on a bao bun is not a lobster roll.

As a Mainer I'm trying very very hard to not be bias.
It is hard since we take our lobster seriously and some places just do it better.
Knowing a place is better isn't biased.
Believing a place is better because it's 'your' place is biased.
@@recoil53 that's literally what I meant.
Forget the lettuce it just takes up more space when you could be having more lobster.
