I couldn't really see anything wrong with the original gearbox,,,no broken teeth on the gears,,,no loose bearings,,,splines looked all good,,,,maybe I missed something.
To me it appeared that the gears were sloppy during the tear down. This could have come from normal use. During the assembly of the gears, he paid close attention to how much slop before tightening everything down.
Those boys will know how to rebuild a gear box by the age of 14.

The clutch plates were probably worn...it was just time for a rebuild after a few hundred grand on the odometer.
