I took my son there on opening day. Al was so kind to take time to speak to me and my son. He signed my JL Unser Special. Toy car. I was so psyched. We had such a good time there. Very cool Museum.
Fantastic job videoing and commentating. The museum is 1st Class, just like the generations of Unser family members that it honors. Race In Peace Jerry, Bobby & Al.
Good evening Mike, I absolutely enjoyed your video ! A nicer job of videoing than you give yourself credit for ! I heard you say you are from Albuquerque, NM, and had never been to the Indy 500 before, I can't encourage you enough to try to experience the 500 at least once in your life ! I also highly recommend you try to experience the Hall of Fame museum at the Speedway as well, it is so worth it ! But, not during the month of May ! I am obviously writing this after the passing of Al Sr, I am SO glad you had the opportunity to meet, and spend a few minutes with him ! He is the consummate gentleman ! I was extremely blessed to have been able to spend a great deal of time with him, as we managed to have our motorcoaches parked next to each other at a number of IndyCar events over a number of years during the early 2000's ! Such an amazing honor for you to have been able to spend a few wonderful minutes with Al Sr. ! Would be very willing to help you with a garage tour if you have the ability to make the trip to Indy !
Looks like a fantastic museum. I hope I get to visit it someday. Al Unser was my favorite driver. His Johnny Lightning car of 1970 was what peaked my interest in Indy car racing. I remember his Johnny Lightning was the 1st car to qualify at 170 mph. I got to see Al several times at MIS when the Indy cars raced in Michigan. Also remember that Al introduced the Ford Cosworth engine when he raced for Parnelli Jones.
It was a great honor to meet Al Senior at the museum in 2015. He would not let me leave without trying his Indy car simulator. That thing was plenty challenging, but the pressure rose exponentially with Senior watching over my shoulder. Suffice to say, I was pretty terrible.
Amazing racing pedigree and history. Glad you got to meet one of your childhood hero's. It was cool of the musium to let you stay after hours to meet him
Great video Mike, I have not been there in over 10 years...I drive by it multiple times a week...Need to go check out the changes! It's sad driving by the Unser's old home on Rio Grande (north of Montano) now that the past many years the land has been divided up and made into a small home development for the rich.
Ok Mike well done my friend. We definitely have a lot in common. Bikes, hot rods, race cars,trains........a lot of common interests. I drove around the "Brickyard" back in the eighties. Pretty impressive standing on the start finish line. Anyhow once again very well done enjoyed it very much.
Great video Mike. The next time I am in Albuq. I shall go see it. I especially liked seeing both of the "Johnny Lightening" cars. Watched the on TV back in the day. When I worked at one of the Chevron stations back in the late 60's and early 70's, Al Sr. used to come in quite frequently with a car. He was a good friend of Bob Hall who was the dealer. Carl Sowell
I've always thought about stopping there on my way back east. Now I will make it a point to stop by. I remember watching them battle AJ Foyt.
Thanks John, It is really worth a look see.
Thanks , Mike
