Rest in Peace, Bob Jenkins and Uncle Bobby. Two of the great ones!

My earliest memories are being outside the speedway around 67' or 68' and hearing Indy race announcer Tom Carnegie saying Bobby Unser and 5 seconds latter hearing the roar of the engine. I'm not sure if it was a ford Cosworth or a offy but it got me so excited to get inside and watch my childhood hero's, Unser Andretti, Foyt, lone star J.R. as well as many more Indy legends. I thought at the time Mario Andretti was two people, Mario and his riding mechanic Dretti because my day told many a story's of the riding mechanic back in the day.

Grew up loving auto racing because of Bobby, when he retired, latched on to Al Unser, Jr. What great memories...The 1989 Indy 500 still breaks my heart, watched it so many times, and Al Unser, Jr. still loses in the end...great race, great commentary!

Always loved to hear Bobby 89 was a heartbreaker. But isn't that what the Indy 500 is all about. That's why winning it brings some tough grown ass men to tears. S*** talk about bad luck look at Mario andretti 😂🇺🇲

Just came across this. Bobby Unser has been one of my favorite drivers, since I was young. He hasn't changed one bit. Got to love him.

As a pilot I loved Bobby Unser.. Al Jr. grew into a great diverse racer. But Al Sr. Al jr and Bobbie are the best.. I love AJ and Rutherford the old guard is gone.

I met Bobby at Willow Springs many years ago. His son was racing in the ARS series. Robby just lost the race and even so, Bobby was very gracious when I asked him for an autograph.

It is so good to hear Bobby Unser talk like this, the knowledge he has and the stories...I could just sit and listen to him talk.

Bobby remains one of the best story tellers in Indy car racing and age has not taken anything away from his wit. Irreverent and brutally honest.

I can now agree with you. When I was young, I used to get a little annoyed with Bobby Unser. My Dad never liked him, so I just kinda went in that direction.
But now that he isn't there, I really miss his stories and insights.
      God Bless him!!!

While the Unsers are always awesome, I thought Sam Schmidts comments at the end totally stole the show. I always knew he was a good guy, but when he talked about how his younger drivers earned their spots and how it would be unfair to remove them, that was awesome. Plus, it was really cool to see how things operate from a team owner perspective.

I was there, it was a powerful moment... as nobody knew what was at play, I felt Sam faced mammoth pressure in that live discussion... pressure to NOT pursue some alternative avenue to get in the race.
It seemed as if it was decided right then... when faced with the situation live.

He was fond of the bottle. He was my childhood hero. If you take away his drinking, or the split, or the penske rules after 94, one of those.... He probably had 1 or 2 more 500 wins in him.
