Hi Mel, I'm probably being a bit over critical , I'm so used to using antenna's that are a lot more efficient than this, I'll play around with it a bit more.
I use mine with cheap fishing pole and the bnc with the long random wire, it's night and day compared to the little whip. The radio is very fascinating, how are you getting on with it after almost a year?
For my needs it's a very good radio, a very tough bit of kit with a good front end that equals that of an elecraft kx3 and ICOM ic-705 I've had both of these radios it sips power on receive out of all three radios it in my opinion the most energy efficient, if you're out in the field it's a very rugged radio that you don't need to buy any additional hardware to protect it enabling you to operate in all weather conditions without worrying water ingress with a monochrome screen that doesn't get washed out in bright sunlight so you can see what's happening on the radio, with it's slim footprint it packs away very well, the speaker mic is very loud preforms the same as a built-in speaker, it's a good all round performer, the one thing that lets it down is six meters my tx-500 is deaf on that band but from top band to ten meters it's fantastic.
@@adam-g7crq I'm glad to hear its been a good reliable radio for you. It is high on my list for my next portable radio. Thank you for taking your time to get back to me. It is much appreciated.
Thanks, Adam. I have one of those works fine for me on the FT817 .

Hi there, the wonder wand has now been retired as a receiving antenna, the radio is the best portable HF set I've had so far.
How has the TX-500 been performing for you? I’m considering picking one up but there seem to be mixed reviews on reliability and likability.
