I'm trying out different auxiliary antenna's with the QRM eliminator to get better results out of it. Just using a random short length of wire won't be good enough to match your main station antenna to null out offending noises especially on the lower bands, I live in an apartment block of flats and getting a suitable sized auxiliary antenna up that's good enough to work in the limited space I ...

      Hi Jez, yes it works ok, it's used on the 7300 for the lower HF bands, it's ideal for me in a block of flats where you don't want the ground to be part of the antenna system, if you're at ground level your better off using a proper grounding.

    Well Adam, another enjoyable toboggan ride. Liked Church Lane. I wonder how far do you have to go for groceries if you lived around that area. I remember when we lived at 117 Upper Selsdon Rd , my Aunt took me and would walk to Sainsbury's on Addington Rd. (circa 1963) . The house is still there but per Google Earth, a little dilapidated. I still have a cousin and maybe distant relatives in other parts of England. The radio spot is fantastic , needs a bench though:)

      Glad you enjoyed the ride, I did 😁 re going shopping I don't live in that area but I think there's a big supermarket not to far away from Church lane in Caterham on the Hill, I don't know how it is in the US but In Europe it's not that car centric and most shops are normally in walking distance from home slightly more different in more rural areas where you might be more dependent on owning a car or rely on public transport.

      For my needs it's a very good radio, a very tough bit of kit with a good front end that equals that of an elecraft kx3 and ICOM ic-705 I've had both of these radios it sips power on receive out of all three radios it in my opinion the most energy efficient, if you're out in the field it's a very rugged radio that you don't need to buy any additional hardware to protect it enabling you to operate in all weather conditions without worrying water ingress with a monochrome screen that doesn't get washed out in bright sunlight so you can see what's happening on the radio, with it's slim footprint it packs away very well, the speaker mic is very loud preforms the same as a built-in speaker, it's a good all round performer, the one thing that lets it down is six meters my tx-500 is deaf on that band but from top band to ten meters it's fantastic.

    What do you mean Adam? Is it perfect, no ... they tend to overload a bit with large outdoor antennas. So what's wrong with it? You can hear shortwave, it has filters, it does SSB perfectly and does NOT drift, the BFO is fun harking back to the way radios used to do it so it's retro. Can you copy bloody sideband with it? Yes. And it does it better on HF than a cheap RTL SDR USB dongle without the massive overloading and images. It will copy everything an 80s desktop shortwave receiver will and even do it better on 10 meters. So what's the problem again mate?

    Ah, NDB frequency. Here in Belgium they are starting to dissapear since everyone uses VOR and GPS navigation nowadays. As I private pilot I have used these NDB's in my training 10 years back. You have an instrument with a needle that can spin 360°. You dail in the frequency and the needle will point to the station so you can turn the airplane and navigate to it. At this point you have an idea where you are on the map relatively to the station. All NDB's in Belgium that still work will continue to work until they break down some day at which point the station will be decomissioned. NBD intruments (working one's) are also becoming very rare in aircrafts. Mainly older one's still have one equipped but I doubt if anyone is capable of using it nowadays.

  • @flyer617
    @flyer617 10 місяців тому

    Catch these while you still can, they are rapidly disappearing. Very late at night, when most lights are turned off and their RFI is way down, with a long wire antenna you can hear 5 watt stations like this for over 1000 miles. The low band used to be full of these, now only a handful from where I am near Boston. Since they are obsolete, I was able to get a digitally tuned ADF receiver and antenna from an avionics shop for free and mounted them together along with the indicator and bring it out for demonstrations. The receiver will also tune the AM broadcast band and will DF those quite nicely.
