Frit Tutorial Part 1

Amy, a lampwork glass bead maker, gives an overview of what exactly frit is and what it's used for in the context of glass bead making. She shows off some of her beads that utilized frit as a component. The technique of making a "paddle" to experiment with different color combinations is demonstrated. Several usually-good and usually-bad base glasses are outlined with photographic examples. This tutorial features Val Cox frit blends.

Hi Amy: I love all your videos and have been trying the frit. I'm having a problem with it turning dark gray once fired. I have been slowly heating it and it's still happening. Do you have any suggestions.

I feel like a moron, but will you answer a question....I’m having trouble with terminology.
COE I know it’s about glass expansion, but what do the numbers mean?
What is striking?
What is reduction?

COE stands for coefficient of expansion. It relates to how much and how fast the glass expands when it’s heated and how much/how fast it contracts when it’s cooled. Generally glasses of different COE don’t play well together, but you can get away with a bit between COEs that are close.
Striking is when you let the glass cool a certain amount and then reheat it quickly. There is chemistry involved and I don’t know enough to explain it 😊 same with reducing - it’s a chemical reaction where metals come to the surface of the glass and it’s done in a flame that is less oxygen rich than usual.
