Goodbye Bugatti W16s: Veyron & Chiron Road Trip + 300mph Secrets
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2024
- It’s the end of an era - and that’s no understatement. On 20 June we’ll see Bugatti’s next hypercar, one powered by an all-new V16 engine, and that means the reign of the W16 is over.
And what a reign it’s been. The numbers from the unique 8.0-litre, quad-turbo, sixteen-cylinder leviathan might not seem all that remarkable in a world of 2000bhp electric supercars, but when the Veyron was unveiled in 2005, its 987bhp (1001PS) output was staggering.
Over the next two decades, power went up to 1200PS for the Super Sport model, the arrival of its 2016 successor (the Chiron) saw a rise to 1500PS, and its own Super Sport variant took us to 1600PS - and over 300mph.
Let’s not get lost in the numbers though, despite the Top Trumps statistics. The Veyron was the world’s first hypercar, it and the Chiron normalised four-figure outputs, and the pair remain the only true luxury hypercars. Nothing else has such a colossal breadth of abilities.
To celebrate the W16, we took the Veyron and Chiron on one final road trip. Together with Bugatti Chief Test Driver Andy Wallace, who shared a few secret stories - including one of jumping a Chiron at over 250mph!

What's your favourite Top Gear Bugatti moment?
Idk
The one where @dennisnoten takes amazing pictures 👌🏼
Uhhhh when the stig was trying to set a lap time in one of the original Koenigsegg and went flying off the track because it had no downforce! 😂🫣🤷🏽♂️
Lol... Every moment when Jeremy, Richard and James were in this show
When Jeremy Clarkson took the Bugatti Veyron across cities in a race against a train.
I'm always surprised when modern Top Gear references the Hammond Clarkson and May era, but this time it felt so very personal and fitting. It hit deeper than usual. Top Gear today is always trying to move on from what it used to be, to what it is now, but this time i truly connected with the presenters nostalgia here and i can truly appreciate this film because of it. The interview with Andy was super interesting indeed, i learned many new facts about both Veyron and Chrion too! Hats off to the lads here, well done!
Yea mate. When i saw those old clips ,I not just saw it , I felt it
When the Veyron was featured in the OG Top Gear it was an event. The episodes with the Veyron are some of the absolute high points of the entire series run. It's so cool that each of the original hosts got their own moment with it.
Thanks for taking the time to say this, I appreciate it! Glad you and so many others enjoyed the film, and you're right: Andy Wallace is a complete legend.
@@ollie_kew ayy thanks for replying too Ollie! Awsome presenting here too, despite the legacy top gear has to live with i still think you and the other guys are cracking presenters in your own right!

What a smart presenter, modest and truly experienced, only asking intelligent question, letting the other one talk and not irritating at all as a human being, and saying both cars names with a perfect English pronunciation on par with their French/monegasc names. What a true expert

Andy is an absolute legend. So humble. Loved hearing him describe it all. So engaging
He makes you feel like you were there. I could feel "the jump" as he described it.
Aside from the colossal power, what makes the veyron and chiron so special is combination of sheer luxury and sportiness.
I like how Jeremy put it back then,
It enables an idiot like me to go safely at 200 mph and way beyond and it will hold my hand while doing it, with no tuner car compromise.
Basically next level performance but made easy for amateur drivers to handle.
Those 2 are peak engineering, I am sure the successor will be Jaw dropping but nothing will be quite as unique as those 2.
That W16 Engines are so special in both. they took us to and beyond 300 MPH , much like the F40 / 959 back in the day.
Thank you Bugatti our childhood hero.
Apparently I'm old.
Mine was..
Ferrari
Lamborghini
1963-1967 Corvettes
..growing up.
I guess you were quite wrong. Going from W16 turbocharged to V16 N/A, capable of reaching 9000 revs.
But your comparison to the F40/959 is spot on. Both were turbocharged cars, and both successors became naturally aspirated (Carrera GT and F50)
@@horvathr95 Indeed I stand corrected! didn't see it coming !! I don't think anyone did.
V16 N/A??? in a times all companies kill off so many great cars , to say Buggati knocked it out of the park is severe understatements.
Also Mate Rimac is a true pertol head , he is the perfcect CEO for a legendery company like Bugatti , awesome person.
When the Veyron came out in 2005, I was completely blown away by the facts & performance figures, I had to buy every mag the Veyron was in, I watched that TopGear race a million times

Its crazy how Bugatti has kept the design of the successor so secret, seeing as many people have seen it at private showings
The 304 MPH NEVER VERIFIED BY GUINESS..
@@TechInfo-ul4xr 304 MPH verified and certified by SAAR TUV which is more valuable than Guiness specialized in book publishing. Andy Wallace, given his proven history (top speed record holder on both Jaguar XJR and McLaren F1) as presented on this video, did it and even briefly reached 502 km/h
No one has seen it there were no private showings . There are only for special models like super sport or pur sport but not for new models overall
@@Tetrathegodabsolutely not true. All previous multiple Bugatti owner clients have seen it already and have had the chance to book their allocation.

This is one of the best videos this channel has ever produced. And a fitting sign-off to an incomparable era.
Bugatti is a queen who has been on the throne of cars for a century
more like since 2005, i feel like ferrari and lambo had the throne from the 1960s to the early 2000's
From lightweight race cars to overweight status symbols - they certainly have all the innovation of a royal family today
Ferrari and Porsche maybe. Lqmborghini? No@@muhidnaveed2617
not really. Ferrari is the king of performance cars.
People usually think all Bugattis SS can archive 300+ but they don't know that the customers version cant archive those speeds but 274 mph only max.
Andy Wallace is so pleasant to listen to. You can clearly tell the passion is there and he enjoys what he does
1:47 the Veyron colors are just perfect.
I also love the whole look of the Gen. 1 Veyron, with the square exhaust and those wonderfull, shiny wheels.
For me personally i like the look of the 1st gen. Veyron more then the look of the Chiron.
I remember seing this car in 2002 in Berlin, when my family and i went into a theatre and on the way was a car dealer with big glass windows and this space ship just stood there.
It was absolutely unbelieveable to see this car when i was a kid. The friend of my sister was also stunned and told me it has 1001 hp and drives over 400 km/h.
Awesome day
Andy Wallace is the Chuck Yeager of test drivers.
Unlike Yeager, Wallace doesn’t have a massive ego.
@@rpc2210 He's the British Chuck Yeager also... More stuff upper lip than balls to the wall. For King and country, as opposed to yeehaw.
Ah no... Who is Andy Green?
763.035 mph is about 459 mph FASTER THAN ≈ 304 mph .
Andy Green is a highly trained fighter pilot and Chuck Yeager was - among many things - an astronaut and a test pilot.
Neither astronauts nor fighter pilots train at home and then simply get given a rocket or a fighter plane to fly.
Yeager took vehicles past their limits, into the unknown, as did Andy Green.
Both these men have/had many more skills and a lot more bravery than someone driving a VW on the VW test track...and he did not even take it to full speed. It is hardly testing the vehicle if it still has more to come, but he gave up.
Chuck and Andy were never quitters.
More like the Chuck Norris of test drivers
@@GuitarRyder11 Andy Green is also a British badass and he did it on the ground AND in the sky.

Memorable video of these legends
Bugatti made the only Hyper Grand Tourers.
The only negatives are maintenance costs and weight.
Hoping the Chiron replacement is quicker, faster and lighter.
The weight may reduce its agility, but it gives a reassuring sense of solidness and stability in the driving.
As pointed out, lighter cars tend to compromise in ride quality and comfort. The maintenance costs screamed aviation because of the materials and intense test for quality check. May in the future, that issue will get resolved with the advance of 3d printing and improved alloy.
The 2024 Rimac Bugatti car, should be faster than the 2020 Chiron Pur Sport and the 2022 Nevera. Thinking 0-62 in 1.7, quarter mile in 7.9 and 0-249-0 in 27.5 secs
What a legend! Thank you for including that interview.
🎉🎉🎉Chiron SS is the Bugatti that I personally think has the best appearance. The long tail adds elegance, and the sharper front adds domineeringness. In terms of performance, it is also a brand symbol with a speed of 490kph; Veyron truly revived Bugatti and made it famous around the world, so much so that many people only thought that "Bugatti Veyron" was a brand [laughing and crying]. The W16 still has about two years to complete final production (Bolide, Mistral). After that, there may not be another engine in the world that uses 98 gasoline and can output 1,600 horsepower. The new car will be released in 5 days. The combination of V16 and electric motor will become the new heart of Bugatti [call]
Veyron is more aesthetic body proportions and lines, very brutal look, and now with legend w16 engine. I think that all car fans crying during this video, and them hit in hearts memories with old TG. I’m very pleased that grown when this and more another car was produced! I’m 37 old.
Excellently timed. Both engineering marvels, their designs even looking better than in the past. I would always remember "Captain Slow" being happy for a second before Bugatti's chief driver goes faster than his iconic lap, glad to hear from this awesome bloke himself. Well done TG, looking forward to the next chapter.
I wish it was 2011 again, when I discovered the original Top Gear and had literally decades of episodes to watch back to back to back, so I could do that all over again.
Same 😅. And for the first time the presenter has recognized top gears history which ironically makes this video more top gearish and a sense of continuation . In the past its has felt like watching a movie franchise like fast and furious or marvel with a different cast and same storyline out of now where without recognition of the works and those who were before them. Completely alien feel. I Just watched last week Top Gear : The Perfect Road Trip one of their specials. Great times those were 🥲.
@joshuakalani590 I still had hope then, and even grossed 6 figures the next year. It was hell and all fell apart, but it took the hope of my future with it. I haven't been able to get it back, I just exist day to day now.

What an awesome video, Andy is a legend and a down-to-earth guy. And the legacy Veyron started will be forever :) TopGear team more videos like this :)
Although the Veyron started the legend, it's the Chiron that does it for me... The design is automotive perfection, pure art and they solved a lot of the usability issues with the Veyron.
If I were in that rarified air of the market and choosing one to own, I'd choose a Pur Sport in black with tan leather. It's a symphony of evil and beauty, that video Harry Metcalfe did makes me long for the chance to drive one. But I get the impression just driving it would almost break your heart, if you knew you'd never get to drive it again.
Ollie is Such A Nice Guy in a Car Never Drive It like a Mad Man ;-)
Thank you for paying homage to Hammond, James and Jeremy.
Im so excited to see what Bugatti graces us with next as well as honored to have seen the debut of both gorgeous machines
For me, the Veyron will always be my dreamcar. Yeah there are better, faster, greater cars these days. But there is nothing that will beat the feeling that little me had when I flipped through the car magazines of the early 2000s and coming acros that picture of the red and black Veyron and the impressive numbers that were alongside it. There hasn't been a single car over which that little boy shed tears when it didn't show up to an event where it was announced to come, except the Veyron. There hasn't been a single car that boy was so excited to see the following year that he ran across the field to tell his dad it was there this year, except the Veyron.
The Veyron hasn't been the greatest, fastest most powerful car for years now. Compared to the Hypercars of these days, some might even consider it slow. But it was when I was a young boy, it was a car that did things I couldn't have imagined back then.
I know I'll probably never be able to afford a Veyron, but deep down there is still that little boy that says "but what if we can?" So until I die or the day I'll drive a Veyron, whichever one comes first, I'll keep dreaming because What if i can.
Matte knows what he is doing actually exited to see what he comes up with
Legend never dies

The argument that the Veyron improved every VAG car that came after it is one of my favourite.
To me, there’s no doubt that it’s true. The car was a risk that paid off in multiple ways.
I used to hate the Veyron, I had no interest in it, but 20 years later I realise that I maybe didn’t understand its legacy.
The Veyron is in my opinion the most beautifull of these two cars. For me it is the one that will stand the test of time looks wise.
The later model Veyrons will always be high on my list of favorite cars of all time. It's design just speaks to me more than the Chirons and the later models perfected it.
Great video and an end of an era. I did my university project on the Veyron. It really was a one of a kind, "concord moment" in our industry. Let's see what Mr Rimac does with the brand and lineage going forward.
