Here's how it really works: Australia buys EVs from China. China buys agricultural products, natural resources, and ocean products from Australia. Australia gets foreign revenue from China and creates jobs for Australians while they save money on car fuel. Chinese have jobs making EVs and get to enjoy eating foods from Australia. Everyone wins. 😊
Depends though. With the orange man being inaugurated in washington will australia follow his tarrifs? Because most of the time they just follow what the "leader of the free world" says.
And it's only the beginning. Next, they'll give you solar panels for free to charge the car. Unless you go for a long long drive, you won't even need to go to charging stations. 🎉

EVs will last a long time, relatively little to go wrong and far less NVH, so the car's not shaking itself apart. The car replacement rate is going to slow down.
@@ZweiZwolf Very true although some Australians who have the money have an appetite for a new car every few years. As EV tech, battery density, range and price improves, early adopters will upgrade and hopefully leave behind them a decent supply of well priced, dependable EVs for the second hand market. I have an EV for our first car but now need a second car so I just had to buy a clunky old ICE car as the second hand EV prices are still a little too steep for me to justify for a runabout. In a few years I'm hoping to be able to offload it for a nice, cheap little EV I can plug into my rooftop and hopefully act as a backup battery. The sooner these ICE cars get relegated the better - for our wallets and the environment.
Great video, Sam. My daughter wants a new car and her mum and I are pushing the EV idea. As you mentioned, the resale value of ICE will soon be almost nothing. I have been driving an Atto 3 EV in Australia for two years and the savings are phenomenal. The Americans and Canadians (and I have Canadian relatives) are simply losing more and more money the longer EV's are withheld from them. Once the dam breaks, it will be mega savings for the regular person.
54% of NEW cars sold in china are EV. Still 46% petrol and the number of cars in use on the roads will be a much lower % for EV. If you are that 46% and you buy now, by the time new EV sales are 75% your car will be a few years old. Buyers in that 2nd hand market won't necessarily be EV or nothing. It's just supply and demand. But EV adoption is climbing, and the desire for petrol cars on the second hand market will diminish thus resale values will drop proportionately more as EVs gain more share, but won't be worth nothing until you can't buy petrol ;) I think the doom and gloom on petrol cars is a bit overplayed. The smartest financial decision is to not buy anything more than you need to get around, but who does that. I don't. Now if I can get a brand new EV for $30k that 's superior to the second hand petrol car that *was* $50k, yeah it won't be worth $30k second hand just because you paid 50k.But it'll be worth $20-25k to someone who can't afford any higher (putting them further into financial disadvantage due to fuel cost). Likewise your $50k EV won't be worth 30K used when better new EVs are the same price. It's also why we have EV incentives, not so those who can afford a $60k car get a good deal to be eco friendly, but to seed affordability for all further down the line through increased competition and 2nd hand availability. (I bought a BYD Sealion 6 I'll keep for 3yrs on lease then sell knowing full well it'll lose value, until I find an EV i'm happy to keep for 10years)
@@MetalPhreakAU "a few years"??? China is moving VERY fast to NEVs: 8 million in 2023, 11 million in 2024, expect 15 million in 2025, 20 million in 2026. China is at 52% today, up from 40% a year ago. China will hit 75% NEVs within 12-18 months. Within a few years, legacy ICE-only vehicles will be under 10% of Chinese car sales, obsoleted by PHEVs with 50+ km battery range.
It will happen, only a matter of time. Imagine wuling houanwang four door mini probably rebadged as MG for the global markets. It costs $6800usd and undercuts seagull
Don't worry, a used BYD Dolphin will be priced at around $15,000 in a years time and it will keep dropping from there on until its carted off to the scrap heap in a few years time with little to no value.
On my 70km drive to work. I pass about 0.1% of vehicles that are towing - so of course that market will be secondary…. FWIW I tow a 1.6T boat with my model Y. Shits all over my patrol for towing. If Long distance towing is your bread and butter you now have the BYD shark to order. Petrol with a 30kw battery at 57k with more features then any Ute on the market and quicker then a ranger raptor, (currently 2.5T capacity… 3.5tonne version coming next).
Yes many country or long distance trips won't be do-able with EVs for a while, however 80% of Australians live in the city and drive almost exclusively in the city. If EVs take over in the city, it won't be long before the long-distance, offroading and boat-hauling EVs will hit the market too.
Champ 🏆 the cost of fuel savings already makes ownership of an EV simple. If you can get solar and battery and forgo grid power. The amount of money you will save in your life will be immense
China should just flood the zone with everything EV in Australia. .The legacy OEM.s have been taking the piss out of us for years . Gov closed down our industry so no tariffs could ever be charged. The range anxiety noise is dying down .Just sit back and enjoy what comes to town over next 1/3 years. EV motors are really simple engineering . German engineering not required. Can't wait for full automation . Transport as a service will not only make things vastly cheaper but a whole lot safer . Road Tolls will become negligible . Insurance costs will be pittance
Nailed it in general, but what about China’s demographic collapse inside 10 years, spare parts? Ongoing supply chains? What about your audio and video being accessed by a communist country under the guise of ‘customer support’ ?
A bit hopeful with some comments about road tolls, but I agree, China is already getting a good foot hold and it is not surprising. US and Euro manufacturers have been ripping us off for decades, time for them to get real, or just fade away. My bet is that China will be our main source of vehicles in the future, and they are quite happy to eat our food, (NZ ) included, so a win win.
If you've got a driveway, you plug in when you get home, the car starts charging when the juice is cheap, and in the morning you're good to go. Never having to visit a fuel pump or a charge point away from home is very freeing. V2L on top of this gives your car another level for static functionality. EVs are the way forward.
it will be within the next 5 years unless they all get their sht together, but they will not. I have just watched a recent VW car manufacturing video, and there were all these people, and they were just wondering around? getting paid very well, and yet not taking part in the exciting developmental future of the world. Tesla can make vehicles 3 times quicker than VW, and they are not even Chinese. This does remind me of when I was just a kid in the UK watching the car industry being destroyed by the unions. I am now in my 70's but those headlines are still vivid in my mind. History may be repeating it seems, and VW, their employees, and other manufacturers should take urgent note.
Not quite yet. But I expect that we'll be seeing 30% of all vehicles sold by 2026. However, I could be underestimating the pent-up demand at the low end. Gasoline cars have been way too expensive for way too long
We already have this version in the UK badged as the "Active". But here in the UK it's priced at the equivalent of $52,000 Australian. They don't seem to be trying to dominate the market here.
@pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 We do have a 10% tariff on imported cars here in the UK. But that doesn't make up the massive difference. Obviously we have higher shipping costs too. Australia is an obvious place to start as it's a smaller market and has less compensation. There is probably less resistance to them doing this in Australia than here too.
good thats what we need cheap affordable cars As we dont make cars here anymore theres no need to slap tarriffs on them like they do over seas to protec the motor industry And the other importers have had it too good for so long with all of them charging same price for cars and over charging People need afforable cars
The issue is, no one manufactures cars in Australia, so they can't make the argument that it's "hurting local manufacturing" so there is no justification for introducing import tariffs. If Australia did put tarrifs on BYD, China would probably respond by putting tarrifs on Australia iron exports.
People obsessed with range, half the population isn't like you. Over 300km of range is heaps for Aussie city dwellers that like the odd trip to the coast on the weekend. Its all they need and want. Our cities are only a hour from beaches, weather is warm and traffic is heavy. Any more range is wasted money. extra weight and is less sustainable. This car is an excellent deal and better value than Toyota's tired offerings.
I can imagine all these little Chinese EVs doing a good job replacing all those Kia Picanto rental cars running about Mykonos and Santorini. Pair it with an array of solar panels for homegrown power and to give goats a little midday shade and you're onto a winner.
There are still so many new petrol station popping up in the perth northern suburbs. I believe that many people are so resistant to the idea of owning an electric car or is it fear?
BYD needs to build a copy of the Ford Everest. The Ford Everest is a great car but overpriced. Sexy and a great car, but way too expensive If they base it on the shark, it would smash it
I don't always agree with him on a lot of things, but he's got this one spot on. Outside niche things like sports cars or things designed to do long distances, EV or some kind of electrification is the future. You'd be mad not to consider an EV if it works with your lifestyle now. It will take time but sooner than you think for the infrastructure to grow. V2X, ever increasing solar installations creating a surplus of energy during the day, etc. I am lucky to have charging facilities at work and a garage at home to charge, and bought a BYD Sealion 6 PHEV. It's got the petrol range, and the EV performance, and during the week I run it pure EV. They aren't built poorly either, on the contrary the fit and finish on the BYD is better than any previous car from western brands. The only disappointing thing is the lack of PHEV choice here. It's a fantastic way to get people to experience EV benefits without the "range anxiety" (valid or not). Yes, if your daily commute is far higher than the lesser EV range on a PHEV, you should just get a regular hybrid. But i bet a vast majority of Australia does
$25k drive away is the break point price. If it's just the battery cost, if you hit this price, even just 150km range won't matter, especially if you provide an upgrade path for adding range later. Imagine, you buy the car for around town for $22k and in a year or two you spend another $5k of money not spent on fuel to add another 100km range. Make them upgradeable, sell absolutely no-frills base models first with a catalogue of things can be bought for it later.
I think that's the long term plan. My friend who owns an Atto 3 says that we should just treat EVs like computer. Their firmwares, hardwares, softwares can be upgraded or replaced, just like computers.
If you're wondering why countries like Japan and US have had Hybrids and EVs for decades but are slow to adopt pure EVs, the common voltage is 100/120VAC at home so type 1 charging. A stepping stone to PHEV seems more realistic until the charging infrastructure develops. I think usdot guideline is that Type 1 is 3 miles per hr of charging. Type 2 220vac is much better.
30 grand is still a lot of money, I think prices can fall a lot further for a basic reliable car without all the extras that you forget about a few months after owning it. I think a dolphin equivilant will be 20 grand in under 5 years.
Hoping they will start something similar in the UK. We are right hand drive too and out sides of the EU 17.5% EV tariffs but we still pay top dollar. The AUD40k is approx GBP20k for the Atto3. However list price (dependent on model) in the UK is approx GBP35k. No wonder importers have always referred to the UK as the golden isle. About time it changed…
We are seeing now in Zimbabwe cuts to environmental care during extraction of minerals, will higher price wars have effect on our responsibilities towards the nature we are trying to secure with this drive to electric?
Never, because Canada is following the US in its anti-China paranoia.. that and the fact that geography sucks. Canada is trapped by the US geographically. Unlike Mexico which has a way out through the south to Latam markets.
Obvious contradiction there. Whilst I have been an EV driver since 2019 and definitely never going back I find the hyperbole on this channel grating. There really isn’t any reason to believe that ICE cars will depreciate heavily in the next decade.
Toyota knows whats happening. Their number 1 car in Australia is no longer the Hilux but the HYBRID Rav4, GAC is 50:50 China/Toyota so look for more of this tech entering cars made in Japan.
Ripped off! The ATTO 3 Extended may have dropped in list price from $47,499 to $44,990 for the Premium, but the bonus $3,000 incentive and free charger have been removed. The drive-away price (NSW private rego) was $47,078 for the Extended, and the Premium is now $47,584. It's more expensive and doesn't have the home charger! How has nobody reported on this? I happened to screenshot the price 4 days ago, and just saw the new pricing today.
A suggestion, for highway driving, overall range is meaningless. What would be useful is a measure that answers the question: can you drive for 2 hours at 110km/h with less than 70% of the battery? i.e., from 80 to 10%. Around town, range is also meaningless.
Ummm... All good or not. I just looked on the MG site and there is a MG3 Car for $AU25600 and MG4 is $AU35000+-. The MG$ EV is 38% more costly than the MG3 ICE car. Just saying. I can see that pricing is starting to get more realistic over time and isn't $59000 for the MG4. I heard that sales of EVs (car) were less numbers sold in 2024(In AUS) than the previous year. This could be why they are dropping prices. Just trying to maintain some volume in the market. Demand needs to be high to cause pricing to fall over time. But this time prices seem to fall because volume is down.
I’ve said I’d not buy a Chinese car, nor anything other than a Tesla… I’ve discovered I could be “bought” by a cheap enough price… now I don’t know if I want these to come to America or not.
I wait!!! Resale value matters. New cars and technology every year and month. Most people cannot afford to buy cars like mobile phones. Buy new every 3 years and dispose or hand down to kids. Also insurance for a brwnd new EV will be at least 2* more than my current car. There goes the yearly petrol saving. To be fair, once V2x is available and affordable I am all in 😉 Once the battery tech and technology curve stabilises so will prices.
I guess you never buy a new computer or car ever with that attitude. They keep changing as new trends emerge. The BYD Dolphin already has V2L - you even get the connecter for free with the car. I'm planning on keeping my Dolphin for about 10 years like all my previous cars - so resale value doesn't concern me in the lease. after 10 years the battery should still be fairly good if current trends continue, and the electric motors won't be near their limits either. The insurance on my Dolphin was less than for my previous Prius.
@IanRussell1969 I buy a new phone and PC about every 3 years. Old one goes to the kids or gets donated. That way I stay reasonably up to date. My point is that we are in the early days of a new technology cycle and prices, standards, hardware and software constantly change. Sure, if you are happy with the current status you can buy in for the next 10 years. But next year you could buy in at a lower price with a better technology/ car. This effect will reduce over time once the new technology becomes more mature and established. That is when I will buy. Probably in 1 to 3 years. Very keen/ curious on V2x..
Nah it doesn’t matter. Just get one after 2-3 years at $5000 which means you have a disposable car at a very reasonable price comparable to a motorcycle 🎉 and after driving for other 3-4 years you can still sell at $2000 😊 or you could keep it and drive another couple of years until it’s gone

@@simonpannett8810 that’s what I did. In Australia a novated lease (for an EV) is FBT free. But … you need to buy insurance to get a guaranteed buy back price, otherwise you could be stuck with paying out the difference between the residual value of the lease and the actual value of the car.
Electric vehicles are simply not practical for people who live in unit and apartment complexes. For this reason alone I do not believe that they are the future. They're a toy for kids with rich parents.
@@Mr-Kind-au Sure but that's no reason to say EVs don't have a future or that they are toys. More anymore homes are getting solar power due to electricity price increase so more people will be able to charge at home.
How will you explain to ev owners in 12 to 18 months time when they are having to continually line up to charge there cars due to the number of new charging sites not keeping up with the large number of ev sales. It will be a nightmare and owners will start dumping them, as they are already doing.
For the most part the new EV owners will do the majority of their charging at home. I've had an EV for about 4 years now and have been surprised that even though the rate of new charging infrastructure hasn't kept up with new EV sales, the charging sites - especially those installed at petrol stations (Ampol and BP) are pretty reliably free most of the time.
They are arrogant, Ford and Holden Australia were arrogant, never valued customers and Toyota rest on there laurels, overpriced and underdone. Good riddance.
The big emerging issue with Chinese brands is spare parts availability not only when new but when the car is 5 years old or older. I see owners junking perfectly good cars.
This was initially an issue with Tesla but now seemingly better. Having said that my 6 year old Tesla hasn’t yet had any parts replaced except tyres and cabin air filters though I am replacing the wiper blades this month for the first time. One of the key benefits of EV ownership.

Australia gets foreign revenue from China and creates jobs for Australians while they save money on car fuel. Chinese have jobs making EVs and get to enjoy eating foods from Australia. Everyone wins. 😊
Well said.
In an ideal world, reality could be Chinese gov builds up its war machine. Hoping to take by force.
Depends though. With the orange man being inaugurated in washington will australia follow his tarrifs? Because most of the time they just follow what the "leader of the free world" says.
So that's a win win situation... Great!
If Australians buy enough EVs from China, China will probably stand up final assembly of EV kits in the old Holden factory to bring the cost down.
Consumer will win, win and keep on winning.
And it's only the beginning. Next, they'll give you solar panels for free to charge the car. Unless you go for a long long drive, you won't even need to go to charging stations. 🎉

When these hit the second hand market in a few years, they will cost peanuts. It will be great for increasing ev adoption.
More peanuts will draw the monkeys out of the ICE age
It is time to BYD ❤
G’day Viking, An article on which EV’s currently have V2G in Auz would be interesting ?
Great video, Sam. My daughter wants a new car and her mum and I are pushing the EV idea. As you mentioned, the resale value of ICE will soon be almost nothing. I have been driving an Atto 3 EV in Australia for two years and the savings are phenomenal. The Americans and Canadians (and I have Canadian relatives) are simply losing more and more money the longer EV's are withheld from them. Once the dam breaks, it will be mega savings for the regular person.
wr

Yes many country or long distance trips won't be do-able with EVs for a while, however 80% of Australians live in the city and drive almost exclusively in the city. If EVs take over in the city, it won't be long before the long-distance, offroading and boat-hauling EVs will hit the market too.

They don't seem to be trying to dominate the market here.
They are heavily tariffed by UK Gov on basis of the Chinese government threatening its neighbours. The Oz government turns a blind eye
That's because of the tarrifs isn't it?
Lithium prices have tanked, down 70%, hence the drop in EV prices.
Sodium is a less expensive battery chemistry that is growing fast.
Only the heated seats would have been of interest of the features they dropped.
Never underestimate BYD but of course they nearly always do Great value
It'll be OK, the big manufacturers can afford lobbyists...

But i bet a vast majority of Australia does
Who needs heated seats in Australia?😂
in the UK if China can undercut the Dacia Sandero petrol with an equivalent trim but better safety they will destroy the UK market
If you are fine with 150 km range, you won't need to upgrade. You'll put that $5k into rooftop solar and batteries, and drive for free.
Will these cars be coming to the UK since they are not in the EU?
Untill now nothing beats the value of byd dolphin and atto 3. You name them, mg4? Geely galaxy e5? Cherry omoda e5?....no way
If you're wondering why countries like Japan and US have had Hybrids and EVs for decades but are slow to adopt pure EVs, the common voltage is 100/120VAC at home so type 1 charging. A stepping stone to PHEV seems more realistic until the charging infrastructure develops. I think usdot guideline is that Type 1 is 3 miles per hr of charging. Type 2 220vac is much better.
In the US, in-home charging is 120VAC, but most homes have 240V for electric dryers, water heaters, ovens, and stoves.
My old Zoe has 89cv, and i use it in ECO mode...
