  • Due to the many problems Ian Curtis had in his life, Bernard Sumner decided to try a technique called past regression therapy. This involves being placed under hypnosis and having someone ask you questions about your life. Ian Curtis's experience of this was recorded onto tape and has now been made available for the first time.

They shouldn't blame themselves too much. Sadly it was a different time where things like depression and epilepsy weren't very well known about, and Ian seemed like a very private person who didn't like to open up about his problems. Also, there were all very young men in their early twenties and probably weren't equipped or fully mature enough to handle the situation.

I think Bernard was the only one who really understood Ian's dark side. Hooky and Steve both seem like the more upbeat fun loving guys but Ian and Bernard had their own demons weighing them down and probably connected on that level. Bernard endured some pretty heavy things in his own life, being raised in poverty by a single mother who suffered from Cerebral Palsy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he struggled with depression himself as a young man.

Absolutely. I read his biography years back and my god I felt so sad for him, he was treated in a very cruel way by his mother at times.

This is amazing! I listen to Shadowplay often, and I always think he is channeling something very deep and personal for him when he is singing. To me it sounds like he is holding himself back from crying in one part of the song. I thought to myself that maybe if he had done past life regression therapy, that it may have helped him, and here I found out today that he actually did, and yet it didn't help him. Although maybe if he had done it with a proper hypnotherapist in an extended session it may have actually helped him? I am a Buddhist and I strongly believe in past lives. Either way I suppose there is no point on dwelling on "what if's". Ian still lives on through his beautiful music and I think this is what is important at the end. One love.

In the song "Something Must Break," he sings, "This life isn't mine." Also, in "New Dawn Fades," he sings, "Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else."

Brodyn I think that's reading way too much into it to put it mildly. More likely to be The Book of Law by Crowley if it followed a spiritual theme, as he was a reader of Crowley, but I don't think it's either. Maybe he didn't know either.

Saints are pit against the toughest demonic forces due to their souls strength - it's an equilibrium - balanced out by being tested according to their strength . he didn't cheat on his wife exactly they had a platonic relationship...anyway saints sin too until they perfect themselves or off themselves.. many do that too it's not easy for them.. i highly doubt the Law here refer to Alistair Crowley...i should have shut my mouth on this one. if you want to find out for yourself go and spend the next 10-20 years meditating and then you can find out who the saints are too. im just responding and later i am deleting these comments as i obviously said too much here.
