Laura Branigan - CC "The First Time I Fell In Love Was You" 1978 3M Commercial

  • 3M's campaign of "firsts" included commercials with artists like Ray Charles. (Memorex and TDK had similar commercials, also featuring greats like Stevie Wonder, Chuck Mangione, Ella Fitzgerald and Blondie) Sid Bernstein had a friend at 3M and convinced him to feature Laura in one of the commercials. It was a huge thing for an unknown artist. Though the commercial was seen by the masses, no one knew who she was, so it didn't give Laura the exposure that Sid was hoping for.

She was. This was a huge break for her. I understand why her PR people shaved off the 5 years, but I look forward to a time when her "history" is true. Ironically, the only person fighting the truth is the one whom Laura thought she could trust to do her right online. Go figure.

***** Actually, she shaved 2 years off of her age when she was 25 (reporting herself as 23), then shaved 3 more when she was signed with Atlantic. She was born in 1952. Cocaine was never a way of life for her, any more than any other 20-30 something girl in the entertainment business. The commercial came to be during the time that Sid Bernstein was trying to create a buzz for her, to get signed. He had a friend at 3M who starred her in the commercial, and it got a lot of play, putting her in the digital tape campaign that also used Ella Fitzgerald and Chuck Mangione. But, it didn't do much, because even though they saw her, no one knew who she was. It was actually shot late 1978, my bad on the title. I was in a hurry. And, agreed, she was beautiful. Much more so in person. Thanks for watching! :)

runandplay You are right, Byram Hills High School gives a scholarship in Branigan's name. It notes that she was the class of 1970. If 1970 is correct, and most likely it is, Branigan was more likely born in 1952, not 1957.

***** Her 5 year younger brother, Billy Branigan was born February 28, 1957. Her first time singing solo on stage was her senior year in high school. She graduated from Byram High School in 1970, they have an annual scholarship program that she set up. She started at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, the same year. Meadow, her first band, recorded their album The Friend Ship in 1972, released in 1973. She was on the European tour of Leonard Cohen in 1976, where she celebrated her 24th birthday in a wild little bar in England. She signed with Sid Bernstein when she was 25, but, she told him she was 23. She signed with Atlantic when she was 28, but, they (thinking she was 25) reduced her "biographical" age to 23. So, at her passing, her "biological" age was just turning 47, when actually she'd just turned 52. I hope that one day it will be common knowledge and she can have a memorial plaque celebrating her life.

+RunAndPlay Branigan Now that I think about it, she was cremated, so she didn't have a tombstone. Therefore her true age wasn't discovered until 11 years after she died.

She looks so young. Did she really tour with Leonard Cohen when she was 19? She looks older than 20, but so much younger than the Gloria video. How did she go to the academy of dramatic arts after high school, if she toured in '76? Did she not graduate from high school? Whatev's, she's brilliant. Thanks for all of the new stuff.

On which album can I find this song?

+Abinash Mishra Laura never recorded this song, other than the commercial for 3M. It was part of the "Digital Dawn of Firsts" that was part of 3M's branding at the time. I don't know if this is an actual song, or just a line written for the commercial to showcase Laura.
