- On this day in 1901, Grambling State University opened its doors.
The first sessions were held in 1901 but the history of Grambling State dates back to 1896, when the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association dreamt of cultivating a school for the region’s Black youth. The institution’s first president, Charles P. Adams, was also a driving force in the early steps of the organization.
The first baccalaureate degree was awarded in 1944, and after expansion from a singularly-focused curriculum, university status was reached in 1974.
