A few important things to note about Fox in 64: A big thing holding Fox back is that his disadvantage in this game is his worst in the series. On top of the stuff mentioned in this video, Fire Fox's charge-up has no hitbox in this game, making is hilariously trivial to gimp Fox's recovery. A big part on why Fox has historically been ranked high in the tier list has to do with the fact that he SUPER abused Hyrule Castle being a legal stage for the longest time. The stage gave him unparalleled camping potential with his lasers. He was widely considered #3 in the tier list while the stage was legal. When the stage got banned in favor for the much smaller Dream Land being the only legal stage, then he started falling off. Remember that the latest official tier list of the game was made nearly 10 years ago, in 2015, and since then, Yoshi has widely considered to have surpassed Fox. A few players have even argued potentially Jigglypuff surpassing Fox, due to Wangera's strong performances with the character.
Fun fact: During Melee development, Sakurai himself adressed how people complained about Kirby being waaaay too powerful in 64, saying that they nerfed him in the upcoming game. Kirby quite literally got jumped by the developers at HAL.
@@Kajssbm He also never makes the Zelda characters very good, except for some reason, Sheik. I think that has more to do with the fact that like Falcon, she doesn't really "fight" in her game. They had to come up with a move-set that they figured would reflect her being basically a ninja. In the more recent games, variations of Link have hovered around mid-tier, MAYBE the bottom of high tier.

64 Kirby is such a beautiful sight to see; I love seeing my boy as a meta top tier. If only Sakurai didn't go overboard with the nerfs in Melee due to wanting to avoid "bias". This is why I'd like to see a new director for Smash 6. It's time for a reboot!
8:50 no, it's actully a frame 4 up smash, is still the fastest smash attack in the series, comes out at the same frame as meta knight's down smash in ultimate
Good video! Smash 64 still holds a special place in my heart. It is janky, simple, and lacks the content of future Smash titles, but it still is fun despite its flaws (like many N64 games). When this game was released, I always played best with Pika. I didn't know about tier lists back then, but I could definitely hold my own against friends with Pika (even as a super casual player). I have to say, Luigi made quite a comeback in Smash since the N64 days. He is truly a character to fear in Ultimate!
Very interesting seeing Kirby in this game. Sakurai's character was great right away and then not so much afterward. I very much enjoy the Smash 64 content, Great video!
Honestly, Falcon's up-air combos is like an early version of the ladder combos. Fox's Blaster is also basically an early version of Falco's. And boy, Kirby was truly a powerhouse in Smash 64. Shame he ended up being nerfed so badly in Melee to an awful low tier. Brawl version is a huge improvement, but later Kirby became a low tier AGAIN in Smash 4 and currently struggles to get out of Ultimate's low tiers. Also, a fun fact: There was one moment where it was thought that Fox is better than Kirby, with Fox ranking 2nd in the second tier list instead of Kirby, before Kirby returned to the 2nd place and was ranked there since the third tier list onwards after being ranked 2nd in the first tier list.
Also fun fact, fox can multishine in 64. He has to jump and then press shine, and since shine cancels when you land, just jump and repeat. Its much easier than multishining in melee
Three objections, maybe more? 0:54 wrong, Mario doesn't have the strongest Upsmash in 64, it is Donkey Kong, though Mario does have the second strongest Upsmash in the game, also shared with Luigi. 7:53 Falcon doesn't have low hitstun, Falcon deals a large amount of hitstun on most of his aerials (except Fair), you probably meant the opposite, as Falcon fast fall speed and high damaging moves are what makes him having the best combo game in the series. But it is true he suffers less hitstun when being hit, but he is still combo food. 10:10 Lastly, Kirby only loses to Pika, but it does beat Falcon and Yoshi harder than Pika could. Lastly, regarding Fox placement on the tier list, it is being debated that the SSB64 Community believes Yoshi is better than Fox.
This was my first Smash game, I used Pikachu a good chunk of the time. Pokemon is my favorite game franchise, so I am drawn to the Pokemon characters. Since I was so young, I uses to make up my own stories with my sister about the Smash characters, and in this silly little lore we had, the Pikachu with no hat was considered to be the most powerful in the cast, and she was the sole, elusive level 10, and the one I'd act out as the most when we incorporated our stories into play. I find it kinda funny that Pikachu ended up being the most powerful in the competitive scene.
Yoshi’s recovery is definitely not a disadvantage. Armor lasts forever, so it’s very difficult to edgeguard him. He probably has the second best recovery in the game
One thing about Kirby's Dair is that it isnt just a spike, but rather a multihit spike where EACH HIT IS A POWERFUL SPIKE. In addition it has like 0 windup compared to newer versions of it. This is THE best gimp in the game (probably)
20 invincibility startup frames too so not only is it the best recovery in the game, it also lets pikachu get out of combos and makes him the best at ledge camping.
Unrelated but I've heard that background music in the beginning before and have been trying to find it since. But can anyone tell me where it's from? Need it for a video. Thanks in advance! 💚
Kirby and Pikachu's recoveries are ridiculous compared to the average member of the cast. They are basically rocking modern Smash game caliber recoveries. When Yoshi might have a case for 3rd best recovery in the game that's when you know being offstage is a struggle in this game.

I'd love to learn more about Samus in Smash 64 because I remember I was checking tier lists of smash 64 years ago and Samus was the worst fighter in the game but she has since moved up. I want to know why.
I'm interested in Ness, who spent an entire decade being considered a top 3 character, and then overnight dropped to the bottom half. It's one of the most sudden and extreme meta shifts in the entire series. And basically the only explanation I've ever heard is "it took ten years for people to realize his recovery is exploitable."
If you arent skilled then yeah Kirby and Pikachu are the 2 best because they are the easiest to be competitive with, but if you are skilled with everyone, the best character is Ness by a mile. Im really good with everyone on the original, and when people see me pick Ness they think either 1. I dont know what im doing or 2. It’s a joke. Then i precede to dominate them. Ness can take a reasonable amount of damage, if you have skill there is not a place on the map he cant recover from, his throw is powerful, he can spike better than any brawler and only Yoshi with little damage can survive Ness spike, his bat smash attack while a little slow is fast enough to time up if you have skill. I certainly wouldnt recommend Ness to newcomers that is where Kirby, Pikachu, and Captain Falcon in my opinion are the best, but if you have skill and want to be unbeatable, Ness is the best choice. Only character that Ness doesnt match up well with is Fox when playing someone really good because if Fox gets Ness off the map, he is quick enough to foil Ness recovery. I dont particularly like Pikachu but I will concede the #2 spot to Pikachu. Its a shame though that i never see Ness get respect because he is the most fun if you play enough to use him to his full potential. This also not based on numbers, this is all based on personal experience, i dont really care whos attack is technically stronger or who is faster this is about overall playing the game and seeing other people play, and i have never seen anyone who uses Ness who actually knows what they are doing not be dominant.
