  • Why did Jin Kuwana become a serial killer?
    #lostjudgment #lostjudgement #yakuzaseries #judgment #judgeeyes #judgement #lostjudgementyakuzagameplay
Jin Kuwana from the game Lost Judgment is an interesting character. He goes from being an average person to a murderer. How could this happen? In this video essay, I want to explore that question by doing a deep dive into the mind of Kuwana Jin. I intend to contrast real life psychological concepts with information from the game Lost Judgement.

Kuwana's a really refreshing take on a serial killer type character
Most serial killers, like in real life, are usually depicted as narcissistic psychos. Not only is Kuwana one of the sanest depictions of a serial killer character but his reasons for doing so are sympathetic. It helps that his victims are so despicable that you can't help but root for the guy, _especially_ if you've been a victim of bullying yourself

Kuwana is the same as The Punisher, who resorted to killing bad guys in his own terms. Because if the law won't do anything about it, he will.
Especially bullies who are always protected, either the school for their own reputation, or the bullies parents for being big shots.
It is tragically unfair, Kuwana just don't want another kid pushed to the end of the line, and the bullies no longer walk free from their actions.

That's a really interesting point and parallel to draw! You're right, his motivations are good but his methods are a bit cruel. That's why it's so hard to hate him

@@stevediament1448 To be honest with you. Kuwana's backstory writing was horribly bad. RGG had a history of doing so many... convenient writings that it annoys me a lot sometimes. As in, they make things as simple as possible so they can go smoothly with basic reasoning and without any sophisticated creativity.
Kuwana was a goddamn plot device, the fact that he was the one who said "don't overdo it" to a student being visibly abused and assaulted, shows that mentally, he was a nonempathetic person. His impulse of regret to become deeply pained by it is rather impossible to attain.
the student wasn't anyone important to him in the first place, he had no interaction with him, no shred of concern nor any attempts to comfort the student. Yet where did that regret even come from? The most realistic thing here would be Kuwana having the same reaction as the bullies themselves/ The student jumping was just an inconvenience in their life and it has nothing to do with them.
Kuwana's past and personality absolutely do not make sense to his motive at all.

that's not at all why Punisher started killing, he did it because he misses the war, he misses being in action, he enjoys violence, since the war ended, he was empty, but a miracle happend, familly died in gang violence, criminals became new enemies and killing them a new war for him, finally he was at peace, he admits it multiple time, he is flawed even in that lettin and even being romantic with Electra, other killer, he dose it because it makes him feel alive, like Walter White cooking meth, Punisher mindset is that no one really misses criminals (flawed assumption since they have famillies too) so they are easy mark to become new war enemies.

Something that wasn't really covered and not a lot of people pick up on is that supposedly, Kuwana only killed bullies where a victim died or almost died as a result of the bullying. For a supposed psychotic killer, that's a pretty big distiction to make. I think Kuwana says so himself; it's too bad the plot kinda just skims over it.

In a franchise that on average has more great antagonists than not, Kuwana really stands out- I know the gold standard is Ryuji (for the rivalry), Nishki (for the build up and drama, even before 0), and Mine (for the three dimensional dynamics with Daigo and genuine sympathy), but Kuwana might just be RGG's best antagonist yet.
7 has a great casts of foes for Ichiban, and 4 and 5 had great rivalries for most of the playable characters, but none of them, to me, clash with their protagonists on such a personal and philosophical level. I've never seen an antagonist I've sympathized with more in this series, that even though he had to be stopped, it leaves a sour taste in your mouth; in a good way. The fact they left him alive to reinforces their dynamics; Kuwana is that "Justice" we wish we could take and get, but he shows the consequences of it. Yagami is the "Justice" we need, and have to uphold, but, more than any game I've seen from Japan, baring perhaps Persona 5, the game takes every opportunity it can to have its cast, AND its protagonist, comment, critique, and even deconstruct its foundation and fabric.
Tl;dr Kuwana is the fuckin man- I hope he comes back.
Edit: forgot to say- love the video! Will definitely sub

I thought nobody could top Judgment1's main antagonist (will refrain from naming them to avoid spoilers), and they do still hold up high, but Kuwana, and even the antagonist for the Kaito files were absolutely amazing. One thing that really bothered me about the plot was that the corpse that had been rotting for 2 months was only covered loosely with a tarp laid over it unfastened, in an empty building that has no windows on a street that has a fair amount of foot and car traffic as well as being a stones throw from a playground. You could smell that body from across the river! And the building is also adjacent to the hideout of the Geomijul who knew about it and apparently were paid off to look the other way. (and risk being discovered)

Kuwana is one of best written character in the series imo. Not being asshole like Iwami,Not being fooled like Kume,Might not gunned at higher-up seat like Aizawa. Also,Might not used good before and corrupted 10 years later.
From moment Yagami met him,Dude were already corrupted.

I subscribed cuz you're the only one i saw making analysis about Kuwana Jin. What's your opinion about the script and dialogue put too much on Sawa argument by Yagami.
Understandable that yagami projected his regret with Emi to Sawa, but many hope he could use other arguments to make the last part of the game more gray, not more Sawa sensei

    • @amberhernandez
      @amberhernandez 10 місяців тому +1

Sawa was his trump card against Kuwana and Kusumoto. When people see the consequences of their actions, they tend to avert their eyes and ignore it as much as possible. If they can reduce the impact of such monstrous actions, they can continue to rationalise their mistakes. "It was just collateral damage," or "for the greater good" are some of the most common excuses for people like Kuwana, but even he still feels remorse or pain when an innocent gets harmed.
Yagami can't let Sawa's death go unanswered, because she's the one person who was wholly undeserving of her fate. The blame for her end can be placed on Kuwana, Kusumoto, and Soma, two of which still feel remorse. Yagami presses that ugly wound to get under their skin; this is what happens when murderers like them are allowed to go free. She can't be reduced to collateral damage, because there's no saving Kuwana or Kusumoto if she is.
If you're familiar with the Photography club's school story, you have a funny little microcosm of this exact concept at work. When people see the worst of themselves, tangible stains they've left on the world, it makes them hurt. Using that pain can make them want to be better, and that's the first step they need. Just as Toribe shows the bikers how much pain and fear they cause, Yagami shows Kuwana and Kusumoto the innocents' deaths they're responsible for, appealing to their humanity.
Funny enough, it's all he's got against them. If he had another card, that would mean more deaths on their hands, and I'm positive that's not what RGG wanted.

One bully had all the blame forced onto him by his cohorts but basically got off scot-free by running to Kamurocho and joining the scum off the city, who applauded him for what he did. The other was out of Kuwana's hands, and had his actions covered up by his school, even silencing the one witness in the absense of hard evidence like the previous bully. I can't speak on the other 5 we never see, but there was no evidence on the 2nd bully to ruin his reputation with, and the first was now in a position where that wouldn't have mattered. There was never going to be any punishment for them if he hadn't done what he did.

Not sure how Skill Up gave this a game a bad review in terms of story progression and writing. I bet his JUDGEMENT is clouded by his personal opinion against some mechanics of the game that is, not gonna lie as well, a bit forced and is just there for the sake of padding. This game is easily one of the best titles in RGG history, and I never felt this fulfilled playing an RGG title since Yakuza 5. Kinda late comment, really loved this exercise at 4:51 but I feel perhaps the video lacked to mention the possibility of a minority of people choosing to demonize the babysitter and or the driver (which I think fits Akihiro and Kuwana), I honestly dunno about the subject but I feel while lots of people would´t help the child thinking at the moment "it isn´t my responsabilty" a number of them would lead up that though later after the tragedy by saying "it was the babysitter´s fault ENTIRELY!" or "the driver was at fault!" as a means to cope about their inaction, in the example they might even become nitpickers, JUDGMENTal and even aggresive towards all babysitters/irresponsible drivers (fiction would portray even one leading his life towards a position of authority to have control over babysitters or traffic so they be responsible, dunno if that could happen in reality) basically take the guilt inside and lead it outside towards others in the form of hatred, and I feel the game portrays this when Akihiro recalls when his son told him about the bullying and he reprimand him by saying "Grow a spine", same with Kuwana being super submissive towards Kusumoto Reiko (him kneeling and his tone of voice at the ending looks more like he was trying to apologize like he was the one that push her son), they both feel hate towards themselves but instead of acting on it towards them they do it towards the bullies (one documental said John Wayne Gacy kill his first victim over something like this, he feel ashamed of being gay and a pedofile but instead of doing self-harm or improve, his selfish twisted mind decide to kill, kinda like punishing others instead of himself, and that act give him pleasure, of course that is just one of many interpretations). I don´t see Kuwana as an "antihero" as others because like Yagami points out (over and over) he doesn´t look like he feels some responsabilty over Sawa-sensei´s death, because he learned to cope with his guilt by shooting it towards others, so much that he became cold, he consciously says he´s doing justice and making a better world, but unconsciously he´s punishing himself, "his soul" if you want but also living a paranoid and secretive life in the underworld, he´s ending the bullies thinking it will kill his guilt with them, but like a bad habit, we can see it doesn´t.
But obviously that is my take sorry for the long read
