How to take Lupin basal cuttings, quick, easy and free!
So i've already got roots in 9 days, even I'm shocked.
GreenTipsGarden Well done Leigh....you have done a good job...🎋🌿☘️🎋

The reason we keep the cuttings to the edges is to get some warmth and relatively moist /dry compost towards the sides of the pot than the centre. So ideal conditions for root growth basically, and secondly it encourages rapid secondary roots growth as they hit the plastic more quickly being to the edge, and branch off to produce more secondary and tertiary roots. Hope this helps.
That's very informative. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
Makes sense.
Technique dates back to terracotta pots era all the above stands true + better air circulation = less chance of disease development
Very nice presentation Leigh...I think you do very well...your nan would be proud
Thank you for sharing! One of my old lupins didn’t survive last winter, so I shall definitely try this!
I have a wild Lupin and going to take some cuttings. Thank you! 💚🌱
Why? they reseed themselves, but the seeds are hard, score them and soak them in water before planting. Do it in pots if you want to be more precise than tossing them on the ground and waiting for nature to take over. If you've got one wild one, you should get more.
The ones I've bought in garden stores have never reseeded, it's possible the seeds are sterile...lots of information on the internet, plants are genetically altered so seeds from that plant are useless....all about the money, selling seeds.
I have many wild lupin, none are perennials. Garden stores label them as such, but they're not - at least, not where I live, location might make a difference.
merci beaucoup mes enfants!!!!!!tres bonne conseil!!!
Hello, thank you for thos video. I'm definately going to try it.
That's great. Let me know how you get on.
Thanks really informative! :)
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Thanks great video !
I'm glad you found it useful
I have a lovely lupin which I bought in Asda, so not very expensive. It has three different shades of pink flowers so I suspect there were three seedlings in the pot. The most amazing thing is that the slugs do not seem to like it. It did have a white friend which did not survive the winter, and a purple/blue one which is ok. So I really want to try and propagate the pink ones, firstly to separate out the colours but also to try for more slug resistant plants.
I tried it and you're right, the basal cuttings rooted in no time and have taken off already - this spring, Aotearoa/NewZealand ...but I planted them directly into the garden
Thank you for the update, that's great to hear.
We plant around the edges of pots because if you think about it. Not as much for drainage but when you tape the plants out of the pot where are the roots. One in the middle would bind these together and cause more root damage on separation. You can get over this by stapling a small home made funnel from plastic milk bottle for an extra center cutting..
Leave The centre vacant and tell the cutting it will have rootspred space in it's final positioning so it can make ready for a bigger healthier plant
Keeping then at the sid elf the pot. I think it's to keep them with good air flow so they dont mold out I think
I'm excited as heck - off to Home Depot to buy a mother plant:)) Had no success growing them from seeds and it takes to long. Subscriber from Florida

can you use the seed pods to start lupine in the spring?
Thanks for this. This is very helpful. I only just came across it and wondered whether it was too late now to take cuttings for this year? Would it be worth trying or have I missed the boat.
I think you might be a bit late. It really is a spring job with those little shoots just as they emerge. But you could give it a try. They just need to be still solid, not hollow.
@@GreenTipsGarden Thanks- I will definitely try in the Spring.
Hi there, thanks for the video!! Will do this now (1/5/21), when you pop the cuttings into the bag and close it to retain moisture, how often should you open it? daily? same question for watering, is this done daily? sprayed or watered? lots of questions, hoping you can answer someone who is a total novice with a large garden and small budget!!
Hey Jo, great questions. Once they're sealed in the bag you shouldn't need to provide any more water. It's a sealed environment. I would open them up every couple of days, just to freshen the air in the bag. All the best with your cuttings, hopefully you've saved a penny or two by propagating.
I was told cuttings root better near the edge of the pot
My lupine is just about finishing blooming. Is it ok to do basal cuttings now?
According to my readings, clay pot edges are porous and allow O2 access to the roots…you are successful with plastic. By leaning on the container edge, perhaps the O2 is able to get to the roots anyway.
Cuttings round edge of pot so that heat on side of pot aids propagation
How do I propograte lumpins
How do I grow lupins I have one but would like to have more
what is the best time of year to do this? any time of year you should avoid?
Good question. Take them in spring when the shoots are just appearing. They'll be able 5 inches long. Remove them as close as possible to the main stem with a sharp knife.
I heard in a video the other day the edge is warmer than the centre and I think that encourages roots. But I may be wrong I watch alot of videos
Thanks for leaving a comment. Yes I've heard that too. Also the right balance of air soil and water apparently. I hope you get to do gardening and not just watch.
i just have 3 lupin pots from garden centre recently and was going to repot them.. meanwhile today's wind blew my another plant pot which is big plastic container, over these and crushed the nice long stems :-( I am heart broken and was looking if i could use these broken big stems as cuttings.. I guess not as per your video a they are hollow and spongy ??
Glad it helped
Sir which state or country do you live. Will this grow and come back in zone 4 areas? Thank you very much. We get lots of snow and cold weather here. I have lupine in the pot but I am so worried it won’t come back after winter and heavy snow fall.
The guy is a Brit (like me) so am guessing he's in Britain... lupins will tolerate Winter cold up to about -25C. They don't like being waterlogged and they like full sun. They're not bothered too much about soil except they don't like heavy clay. They're also frost hardy when Spring arrives but I would cover baby leaves with upturned plant pot if you're expecting a heavy snow. Other than that you can leave them to do to their thing 😃
The edge of the pot has the best drainage.
Thanks. I watched something recently that explained it's the area where the air/soil/moisture ratio is best for rooting.
I did all this but my cuttings rotted! I had them too close to a radiator and they wilted and went brown, breaking off. Was it the heat or were they also probably too wet?
Unfortunately it might happen sometimes. Were they maybe too wet? Periodically opening up the sealed environment can help with humidity build up. Were you able to provide good light and some warmth? Were the stems still at the solid stage, as in not hollow? But it's still early in the season, you still have time to try again if you have viable material. Don't give up.
I didn’t think I overdid the watering but they were too close to a hot radiator for a day or two and I think this caused the problem. Otherwise they were on the island in our well lit kitchen which would have been warm but not hot. I’ll try again.
How long should it take at this time of year for them to start to root?
By three weeks you should see roots I would say
I picked my pods too soon. Can I still wait till they turn brown and save the seeds? Help. Thank you.
It depends how near they were to ripening. If the seeds were developed and just needed to dry off then you're ok. But if they were not yet fully developed they won't germinate. Once the shell has developed it's dark hardened colour sow a few in a pot and see if they germinate.
@@GreenTipsGarden the seeds look like they r fully developed but r green.
@@marshagallant9395 give them some time. Leave them in an airy place to dry. Or in a paper bag
I guess you plant them on the edge so you can separate the roots easier 🙂
Another good reason. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
It was very useful. However, you didnt state when this should be carried out. that would really have helped.
Thanks for the feedback. 👍🏻
Hi Shaun, spring is best. Linda
In the spring to be planted when? My question also.
NE usa here, asking.
I need a better map for this stuff!
@@jgrant4242 Hi Jennifer, once you can see roots and new growth you can pot your cuttings on. Once they are growing well, have a strong fibrous root system and you've hardened them off you can plant them out. It's hard to say a date, as it depends on a number of factors.
Does anyone want lupin seeds? By the way, great video as always!
Thanks. 😉
Would you like seeds GreenTipsGarden? I have some outside and it doesn’t cost anything except for shipping
@@violette80 thanks for the very kind offer. I actually got some sent to me from an instagramer, thefrontgardeners. They sent loads! 😄 so I'm ok for the moment.
