Have now moved to North East. Used to start growing in South in January but when should I start growing in Durham. October for June bedding plants?
Hi Kath, it's very difficult to be 100%. I would suggest that you speak to your local garden centre and as they will know the area very well.
What’s the best way to protect them from slugs and snails if in a border ? I planted in pots to avoid the slugs / snails, but they got pot bound and I had to cut them out with a bread knife ! Currently replanted in cheap plastic pots as doing ok as opposed to my expensive pots
I would try a garlic spray, the allicin in the garlic is both a repellant and is toxic to slugs and snails.
I had lupins in the borders that got absolutely hammered by snails so I replanted them into pots. They were OK until the snails found them again, and I've had to just give up and since they're no longer flowering I've let the snails have a lupin buffet. I've tried everything, egg shells, wool, pellets, strulch, picking them off at night (and lobbing into my neighbour's garden) - but they still seem obsessed by them. Is there a point where you'd just give up growing something? Also should I cut the lupins back since they are currently just stalks with tiny bits of leaves left?
Try a garlic spray to deter the slugs and snails. The allicin in the garlic is repellent and toxic to slugs and snails. Leave the lupins until the dieback in autumn and then you can you can cut them back to ground level.
Are lupins safe for pet owners ?
If you pets eat plants, then best to avoid them.
Do Deer eat Lupins?
As a last resort they will.
