for anyone who has never own Lupins from seeds before (including myself) this is the perfect tutorial video to watch , It sets out in plain & easy to follow instructions how to deal with each stage of the growing process & planting , excellent video for anyone with limited experience of growing anything from seeds , a very well put together tutorial , Thank You
I used seeds from one my lupins I have growing already and they are starting to grow but it's September so I may have to bring them indoors before it gets too cold. Great intuitive video thank you.
You sure make it look easy! Thanks for the great instructions, as always! These will be on my list of seeds to purchase! one more beautiful perennial to add to my garden space. Thank you so much! EDIT* There seem to be many varieties of Lupines. Do you have a suggested favorite? I'm going to try to purchase perennial Lupine seeds in a couple of colors!

Looking forward to this new addition to my garden once spring/summer arrives! Be well and enjoy your gardens!
Really appreciate what you said about the lupines blooming in the same year. I plant to fall plant mine since I live in a frost less zone -- Coastal California. I wonder if the same is true of digitalis, hollyhocks, and other biennials?
Excellent tutorial, I've grown my seedlings from the seeds I collected last year, they have germinated well, my next job is transplanting, I hope for good results after watching your video, thank you.
I suggest that you get several packets if Lupin seeds and plant where they get at least a partial shade, and not where it gets real hot. These are absolutely gorgeous in mass, not paced in a row. A perennial that will reseed - so don't go about digging around the area and only pull weeds when they are young.
Just love lupins ❤. Thank you for your clear guidance. I've got about 40 in little pots not quite ready to plant out. Would you recommend putting them out for a few hours first to harden them to outside temperatures gradually? Thank you 🌷.

Thank you for your informative video, I have two sets of leaves now and am ready to separate them in to individual pots, should they still be out of direct sunlight? I have them on a windowsill indoors. It's 19th January in UK 😊
i put mine in water for 6 hours then wrap in a wet napkin for 24 hours and they start popping out roots put them in compost and 2 days later they have grown about an inch above the compost so way faster.
I live in Thailand and there is only 3 seasons here, wet, hot and hotter. It is now August so I am going to start the seeds now as it is the start of the rainy season so by the time the seeds have developed it should be near the hot season. I have also got Foxgloves, Gladiolus, Dahlias and quite a few more types of seeds so lots of challenges for me. I am open for advice. I had no problems growing plants in the UK.
Thankyou for your information. It is hard for me to appreciate growing in such a different climate from that which I am used to. Best wishes and good luck with your growing!
@@LearnHow2 Thank you for your reply. I have been working and being interested in planting and landscapes for the past 50yrs from when I was a young British soldier in Germany to working with the environment agency in England. This lead me to go to University in Leeds getting a BA with honours and a graduate diploma in landscape architecture. I moved to Thailand 11yrs ago met my Thai wife and we have travelled around Thailand due to me working in various schools as an English teacher. I found that each area where I travelled each has its own native plants that cannot be intermingled around Thailand from Pattaya to Chang Mai to now where I live Korat (Nakorn Ratchasima). I bought these seeds and bulbs in Thailand from Lazada a Thai shopping agency as opposed to transport them in from another country that may require permits. It is going to be a challenging time for me to create a Thai English country garden under these weather conditions. The area where I live it is salty and in parts sandy so a greater challenge.
So if I start on Feb 3rd, will they flower this summer? Also can I keep them in pots? If I plant in the ground, the rabbits eat them same day. Then voles will eat the roots in the winter. It's been frustrating. I do love lupine though. I hope pots are ok as they'll be high on a wall away from critters.
Lupins prefer to be on the ground, but you can plant them in pots too. It's recommended that they are deep, well draining pots, and ideally have 3-5 plants per pot (they like being together apparently!)
Excellent video sir 👍 If I were to sow some seeds in early July is it best to plant them into position when they have grown large enough or keep them in pots over winter?
Once established outside they can be left year after year. For new young plants I would play it safe and keep them protected over winter then plant out early spring.
Thankyou for the video. Can I ask - will these grow year after year? Do you cut them back or do you pull them up once they've finished flowering? Sorry - new to lupins!
Some experts say you have to scarify the seeds between two sheets of newspaper or keep them in a cold area (fridge) for a few weeks to weaken the hard shell.
Mine seem to be growing so slowly. Perhaps I didn't sow them early enough. Next year I'll follow your tips and this from the RHS website: "Sow seeds in early to mid-spring. The large seeds have a tough coating, so it is best to nick them with a knife, then soak them in water for 24 hours before sowing. They should germinate in 10-14 days at 10-15°C (50-59°F)"

Which season did you do this seedling?
Brought some lupin seeds today was wondering where the best place for thier final resting place is partial shade full sun etc?
Step one, get seeds from neighbors garden. Step two because I have about 1kg of seeds just toss them on the soil then rake .. vigorously. Enjoy

Is only vermi compost or along with some Coco peat & Garden Soil/sand has been added
The soil is a general purpose compost with nothing added.

Hi Angela. They should be ok in sunlight now - especially as it is not very strong at this time of year.

My experience says damp dry is better than thorough watering before transplanting. it helps keep the shape of the root ball

Yes they will come back each year. I leave mine in the ground over winter. They die off then new shoots appear in the spring.

This is an invasive species in many countries. Make sure you are allowed to grow them first unless you want to pay for sanitation.
