The ejection hurts but the suspension is a killer. Why doesn’t MLB have a way to get a sample off the players hand and determine through chemical analysis if it’s illegal? Then the suspension can be issued if it’s the case.
Agreed. Get a sample sent to the lab b4 u issue a suspension. Yet ohtani bets on baseball and there’s no investigation. Too bad the Mets didn’t sign him as a closer.
It was an entry inspection. Diaz had yet to take the mound... Therefore, having rosin on his hand was a violation of the rule. You aren't allowed to come into a game with rosin from the dugout or bullpen, you may only use the bag on the mound. The rules were correctly applied.
@@snerdtergusonyeah.. that’s not true. According to rule 3.01 and 6.02 a player can’t have a foreign substance on his glove or uniform while coming into the game however can have rosin on his arm or hand. Once on on the mound the player can not add any substance directly to the ball or be in possession of ANY foreign substance including rosin which is why they use the one on the mound
As a Dbacks fan i think its weird that both these save pitchers said that they didn't and won't change their routine after the suspension. it does seem like the umps are doing that on purpose to give the other team a chance, glad the cubs didn't come back. Hoping Diaz appeals successfully
Sugar and Mendosa should have argued much more vehemently against the ejection. Even David Cohn said on the air that looking at the zoomed in pic - Diaz's hand appeared to be "normal"
About Edwin Diaz getting thrown out of last nights game the rule states: "Major League Baseball (MLB) Rule 6.02 states that pitchers cannot have any foreign substance on or in their possession. This includes pitchers' hands, gloves, and uniforms. Pitchers are allowed to use rosin bags on their hands, wrists, and forearms, but only with league-approved substances. Other substances that are prohibited include spider tack, pine tar, and sunscreen mixed with sweat. If an umpire determines that a pitcher has too much sticky substance on their hands or other areas, they can be ejected from the game and automatically suspended. The umpire has the final say on what constitutes too much, and they may conduct more thorough and random checks. Players who refuse to be inspected, or managers who argue the ejection, may also be ejected and suspended" Now if the rule is stated and worded in this way why was Sugar thrown out and suspended for using a legal substance (rosin). The rule needs to be written in a way where the blue pieces of the field can just throw someone out of the game because they dont like how sticky someones hand feels
Yeah, When a Pitcher is Caught using something illegal on His Pitching Hand, instead of being ejected from the game, that Pitcher Should be Forced to Pitch with His Opposite Hand/Arm for at least Three Batters.
what better system can there be when the umps caught him "red-handed", and ejected him. League rule then kicks in and the pitcher gets an automatic 10-day suspension. The system is pretty good, if you ask most people about this incident.

The problem is pitchers are allowed to put stuff on their hands and then the umpires, who are basically incompetent have to decide whether that the stuff on the hand is illegal. Most times they have the pitcher wash it off, but in the case of an exceptionally incompetent umpire they ruin a team’s season. At least MLB should wipe off the offending hand and test what is on it, before suspending someone for 10 games. Why the players agreed to giving umpires and mlb this power over them is dumb. Thank goodness I don’t go to games anymore.
The catchers load the balls everytime the ump's hand them a new one. You ever seen them check the catchers? Just little dab will do ya. Any residual on the pitchers fingers usually gets wiped off on their hats. But they'll always cry rosin if they do get caught. That's what their told to do.
@johnnyappleseed79 the magic of chemistry was hiding the substance from that weak method of checking by umpires. From now on, when they check the Mets, it will be more thoroughly. It appears, from bits and pieces coming out after the game, that the Mets pitcher(s) hide it by using resin with the chemical out in the bullpen, before they come to the mound. The umps won't wait for Mets pitchers to wipe off hands before they check, from now on.
MLB rules has gotten ridicules with there rules. If it’s going to be a problem using the same substance that pitchers have been using for years, then ban it.
