A long, in-depth look at my workflow for creating a song from scratch on the Dirtywave M8 tracker. This intermediate walkthrough/tutorial is meant for M8 users who are already familiar with most of the basics. I cover a lot of ground and provide commentary about my thought process as I'm composing a song. So come with me on this journey as we meander through chords, beats, melodies, basses, and samples!
This track can be downloaded here (if you pay for the song I can send you the M8 bundle upon request): littlelosses.bandcamp.com/tra...

Pls note: at 30:00 you should set the SRC to your kick. I wasn't even paying attention, doh!
Long form content I love, and I think it's great to get one video with comprehensive guide/info.
For me, I at the moment have trouble getting to watch an upload so long in a whole play-through - maybe you can triple up on your content by having the whole original video like this, and then a version with the first half and then a part with the second? It would certainly help me make sure I don't miss any of your expertise!
Please don't stop sharing the M8 knowledge and experience ❤
Had a M8 for just less than a year but with life haven't used it as much as I would like to (every day!!!!) - so watching your stuff is like a speed run on learning curves!
This is hands down one of the best tutorials on the M8. Thank you for sharing your workflow with us.
M8 skill level: Infinity.
This is real magic. Will watch it at least 10x to process everething what is happening here.
Insane mad respect !
Appreciate it! Let me know if you have any questions on your journey with the M8 and I'll do my best to help ya out
Been watching a few minutes every day and the amount of things i've already learned at 45 minutes in is crazy! Thanks for making this
Awesome! Really glad this video is useful for you :)
Awesome workflow tutorial and lots of neat M8 tricks, dope track! Thank you for sharing it! :3
Good ol' happy accidents. The Bob Ross method of creativity.
These techniques are not only helpful for the M8, but other trackers in general. Thanks for this breakdown!
Late to the party, but I just set up a headless m8 and have been working through some UA-cam tutorials.
… and then I found this one. It’s like going from learning basic algebra to calculating black hole physics with a Nobel prize winning mathematician.
I have a Polyend tracker which I quite like but now I *get* why everyone prefers the m8 by such a large margin. The automation tricks are so deep I’m not sure the pool has a bottom.
Crazy. Well done m8!
The M8 is a truly magical device. And the beta version of the new firmware just dropped recently which has massively expanded this thing's potential. I also started off with the Headless version, but only because I knew I wanted the real thing and wanted to practice as much as I could before it arrived. If you haven't already, definitely hit up the M8 Discord server. The community there is extremely helpful and kind.
This is easily one of the best M8 tutorials I’ve seen so far. Fantastic stuff mate
I’ve admittedly been struggling to do anything at all with the M8 for the past year. It’s always just felt too inaccessible to me. I figured that knowing the controls and what everything does from all the videos I’ve watched on it would have been enough, but it wasn’t. Your walkthrough is the first time I’m actually making progress with it and feeling like I’m taking away methods that I will actually remember and be able to use to get a song. I’m excited to get all this music out of my head and into the real world. Thanks!
That’s so cool!! I’m really glad this video could help you out! If you have other questions about the M8 or workflow stuff, don’t hesitate to DM me or something and I’ll do my best to help. Cheers!
I learned so much from this. I hadnt picked the M8 up in a while and forgot so much, and you taught me more than I knew before by miles. Thanks dude!
Very cool to get an idea of someone else's workflow, interesting! Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Wow 🔥This composition is mind-blowing!
Superb, thank you for taking us on a ride. Lots happening in the LFO land. ❤
Need to watch again. Listening to it while working, really like your creativity
LOVE these workflow videos! So good to see the way you improvise and problem solve as you cook up your beats! Hope to see more stuff like this in the future!
🔥
you're blessed mate! thanks for sharing!
I've been watching this in chunks over the past week and it's a really great walkthrough of your process, really cool to watch! Of course, it is making it harder to wait for that July -Aug batch 😅
Just over halfway as I type this (adding in the zealous abyss vocals), really cool song! Getting a bit of Wii shop channel vibes from the chords!
Just got an m8 headless setup a couple weeks ago, your SONGS are some of the cleanest I've encountered, looking forward to watching this and stealing your ideas!! Thanks for making this
Absolutely great video, with a great final jam. Thank you.
Please do another one of these!
I really hope you record another one of these. This one was so good, and I got a lot of great ideas by watching it. Thanks!
yep please do, u earned my sub. also, it would be nice if when you use hotkeys, you mention what buttons u r pressing. like when u cloned a phrase, i had to look up how to do that,.. 😅
So many great nuggets in this video. Awesome work!
Thanks for watching!
This is excellent. Will be playing this half the speed to follow ) please do more. Subbed
Wow ! Nice video. Very comprehensive! Thanks for the uploads.
Thanks very much
this is excellent, i finally ordered one in the latest batch... i can't wait to watch this again once i get it :) incredibly helpful overview and tutorial, subbed for more my dude.
Nice! Really excited for you!
Thank you mucho! My M8 showed up yesterday. This is definitely an intermediate/advanced lesson. I still need to get my beginner tracker chops in. I’ll be back! 😂
Inspiration for hours..Thanks a lot for this insight in your workflow and super ninja skills!
Glad you found this helpful!!
Delicious! A big TY for that!
Your theme is also very attractive!
Thank you! I love that you can customize the theme however you want on the M8
Nice Video, Thank you man! :) cant wait until my m8 arrive ☺
Awesome! Almost 3 hours? That's crazy you've probably spent so much time with this little machine. I am still learning so thank you !
Yeah I've spent a good amount of time with it, but there's still so much to learn! I hope you find this video useful.
Thanks for this presentation! A pleasure to watch.
I'm not sure if you physically own an M8, perhaps you need to to use this program, but another video showing all the button pressing you're doing, starting slowly, then letting the viewers know that it all starts to become second nature, that would be really fun to watch.
@@CaidicusProductions I do have the hardware version of the M8. I did try to set up the display so we could see the button presses but that application didn't run as smoothly as the web display one. Thank you for your input!
@@that_Ranjit You betcha, and thanks again for the video.
Epic, thank you so much for putting this together! I'll be giving this the time it deserves with my M8 and a coffee or two - hopefully tomorrow. :)
Thanks for the encouragement and for giving me the motivation to make this happen!
@@that_Ranjit Your music is great, you know how to write a decent track - it's inspiring to get me on my M8 playing around again properly. This tutorial is not only perfect, it's going to super-charge my (and I'm sure many others) music making, so thank you!
Thank you so much for making this! I learned so much! Never thought I’d watch a 3 hour video all the way through lol (I never used REP now it’s become a main FX for me)
Hell yeah i'm super glad this video could be useful for you!
I don't know why I was scared of trackers till I got the polyend one. After you get a hang of the navigation and basics, the little tricks you can do to hack up things to make it interesting is really nice. I think thats what appealed to me about the Elektron stuff, is things like probability or conditionals (Probably because I have a computer science background). Digging the use of indian percussion for the examples too. Great, now after using this headless I am going to want the real thing (At least the hardware is even better with the refresh!)
Thanks for this! Please make more videos like this to help the newcomers :DD
Wow, this is beyond in-depth! It's mind-blowing! I might have to break it down into smaller parts, but hey, at least I know what will keep me entertained during my commute this week. Thanks for the awesome content! 🙌😁
Thank you! Yes best to take it in chunks over the course of a week or so
ha ha, look who I find in the comments :D
@@raz_van__ heya😁
Just commenting again to say I've watched this all the way through twice now 😅 You just have so many great ideas, its great to watch. The final track is fantastic ⚡
thank u so so much! i would like to also make some shorter-form videos that still contain lots of useful information, but edited down a lot. but maybe at some point i will also do a walkthrough of another song that I already have finished.
@@that_Ranjit That would be great!
Awesome tipps in here. In my dreams your sample bank was available as one juicy download :)
Nice, thank you.
superhelpful, thanks a lot
there's a command RNL randomize left, which can randomly scroll through a few instruments, if you wanted to make your percussion even more chaotic!
Great walkthrough: really enjoyable following your flow:: aux tables might be a good way to introduce Fx to numerous instruments simultaneously
Thank you! Absolutely. The more you use aux tables, the more creative freedom begins to open up. I'm excited to keep learning more!
cool video! at the start when you are creating kits, ive found its faster to copy and paste your first sample instrument over to a new slot and then you can hold edit and left and right on the samples to select a different one. Makes creating kits really fast
Interesting! Does that method also audition the sound?
nah it doesnt audition the sound but its useful if you have a whole folder of hats for example
Dope
Merci 🙏
Which theme do u use in this video ? Is it available by default ?
I kinda wish M8 was available in a web browser like this and you can use it with you keyboard for a subscription
You could always go the Headless route! You just need a Teensy chip, then you can absolutely use the browser to run the M8 software. That's actually how I started before purchasing the hardware device. Good luck!
same. go headless first!
Quick question: as a newcomer, where does one get those sound packs? feel like the ones I have are very limited 😢
If you just google “free sample packs” you will find tons and tons!
Great Tutorial but PLEASE make your Voice the next time a tiny little bit louder then the Music. NOT the Music as doubgle as loud as your Voice. That will be much easier to watch/listen. But anyway. GREAT TUTORIAL!!!!!
yo bro, so you asked if anyone knew how to copy over settings in an instrument to save time and there actually is a way to do that. go into the instrument, select the name of the sample (if its a sample or what ever. so like select drum 3) it should be just to the left of edit. and just copy/paste that just like how you would copy paste anything else (shift/option, shift/edit).
What’s the key combination you do for the Random Pattern at 14:27 ?
option + right
excuse me bro is there a way to nudg notes off the grid ? or track delay feature , to make unquatized feel ?
Yes, you can use the DEL command to delay a note by a certain number of ticks. The default is 6 ticks per step.
@@that_Ranjit thank you so much im sure it was capable ! making hip hop or what they call lofi now should be cake even though i dont see hip hop producers talking about this piece of gear . this is way too portable more than mpc or even the famous sp 404 ,
Also you could use custom groove settings for that. So each step could have different length
@@TheK0lyan definitely making hiphop with this thing
sounds good but looks like a excel spreadsheet to program
that is pretty much what it is
@@that_Ranjit i still need to try it
@@SonicVibe It's the best spreadsheet you'll ever play with.
@@HenleyBailey i can't knock the sound polyend tracker ok but the m8 sounds better to my ears I wanted to try one they just never in stock
I'm only a couple minutes into this, but you FLY through the interface. And i'm wondering - do you hold it and use your thumbs, or have it face down and use your fingers?
I switch between the two. I think for most of this video i had it laying on the table and was using my fingers. But if I'm on the couch or something I hold it like a Gameboy and navigate with my thumbs
Can you save the instrument then open a new one, load your first instrument and rename it?
yep!
its the sfhift feature?
Do you have a link to the India Beats sample pack?
howtomakeelectronicmusic.com/free-indian-percussive-samples/
What theme is that for the screen?
Made it myself
MFW you don't call it "mate" : ¬¬
