- Given these insights, the Dark Night of the Soul can be framed as both a theological and psychological phenomenon. On one hand, it involves the relinquishment of false idols and the purgation of attachments in pursuit of divine union (John of the Cross, 1991). On the other hand, it may also represent a deeper engagement with the unconscious aspects of one’s psyche, prompting significant restructuring of the ego and integration of previously disowned elements (Jung, 1969; May, 2004). In both frameworks, suffering serves as a crucible for transformation, highlighting the potential synergy between the mystical teachings of St. John of the Cross and contemporary psychological theories.
In seeking to unite these perspectives, pastoral counselors, spiritual directors, and therapists often advise a balanced approach that takes seriously the spiritual dimension without neglecting mental health needs. Peer support groups, spiritual direction, and therapy can all function as vessels through which individuals are guided safely through the Night (May, 2004). At the same time, the “darkness” is not pathologized but rather recognized as a catalyst for growth, healing, and a more authentic spiritual life.
