- Defeat in the Betfair Chase had taken plenty by surprise, but Kauto Star bounced back here, reunited with Ruby Walsh. Despite another final-fence error, he was much too good for this strong field.

The acceleration when Alberta’s Run - a multiple G1 winner - came to him was exceptional. The jump at the second last was even better.
Kauto Star was doubted before this race by many people (me included). He had only won one out of his previous four races, and that was a soft Grade One at Down Royal. After defeat to Denman in the Gold Cup, he also lost to Our Vic at Aintree, then unseated when in serious trouble in the Betfair Chase after winning in Ireland.
People questioned whether he was regressing due to being French-bred, or the two gruelling races at Cheltenham and Aintree had left a permanent mark. He put those doubts to bed with winning here then becoming the first horse to regain the Gold Cup a few months later.
His greatest performance would come 12 months after this, and he would bounce back from further defeats to win another Betfair and King George at the age 11 to cement himself as one of the greatest of all time.
Travels, jumps, courageous, consistent, one of the best chasers of all time
Has to be rated the best since Arkle
Seem to remember this one. It was actually Kauto's first victory since the Ascot Chase in February. Redemption from Haydock.
Kauto Star was one of the quickest horses ever but he always wacked a fence or 2 on the way round fell a few times as well
