  • Numerous Cyrillic alphabets are based on the Cyrillic script.
The Cyrillic alphabet is based on the Greek alphabet, with additional letters invented to represent Slavic sounds not found in Greek. There was a close connection between the Orthodox faith and the use of the Cyrillic script (“Slavia orthodoxa”: Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Serbs). We could also mention the Cyrillic script for rendering the languages in a number of Asian states, e.g. Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
