My favourite line ever happens, when Morpheus confronts Lucifer in hell and Lucifer threatens him, saying in hell, Morpheus would not have any influence. Then the Lord of Dream says: "Tell me, Lucifer Morningstar. What power would hell have, If those imprisoned here would not be able to dream of heaven."

I’m new to Sandman and Books of Magic. What Dream implied meant that if those in Hell could not dream of heaven, would rebel against Lucifer?

@@arnoldrivas4590 I think it means since hell is based on torture, if its inhabitants were unable to dream of heaven or a better world, then the torture would be pointless. Would you feel deprived if you didn't know there was something better.

My favourite Sandman scene is when Dream faces Lucifer in Hell and Lucifer tells him that’s he’s powerless here, but Dream hits him with a “Hell would have no power if it’s inhabitants could not dream of Heaven”
    I got shivers

    • @danman101stefan

Another moment (though it’s from the Lucifer solo series) is when Dream is just listening to Lucifer justify how he’s had enough of being in hell for bullions of years and that humans are the true monsters. There’s a scene where Lucifer sits on a rock and says he’s tired, and it look really aesthetic.

Sandman really is something else. I've read it like 10 years ago, it was my first graphic novel, and I was blown away. To this day I still think about the story, the characters, the art. It's something that really stays with you. I should really read it again, it's been a while.

My favorite comic series, period. I mean that as if were a giant graphic novel with some side stories, but all contained as a giant comic story cycle. There are many wonderful comic series out there and I've read/owned a lot of them, but Sandman was that comic that was a joy to collect when in its original run, to share with others, even if they weren't comic fans and then re-collect all over again in the various hard covers that became available over the years, in particular the giant 5 volume leatherbound with slip cases. I'd also add that just like Lord of the Rings and Dune, it led me to so many other writers, artists and personalities mentioned in the series.....a grand achievement in literature, but as a comic series....Oh, I loved it when Gaiman won the World Fantasy Award for best short story which was A Midsummer Night's Dream...A story about Shakespeare and his son...plus the world of Faery. Back then, mere comic books were kind of looked down upon. But thanks to Sandman, it changed that perception.

This is also my favorite graphic novel of all time. It really helped me understand metaphor and symbolism on a deeper level. I recommend just starting with Preludes & Nocturnes, Overture should only be read once the main series has been finished. There's a good reason why Gaiman started where he did, and it's fascinating to see the art style evolve over time and get more and more amazing. I hope this video gets more people to read The Sandman. It's one of the most underappreciated masterpieces of fantasy literature.

Gaiman, Morrison, Warren Ellis, ....I know the 90s is often ragged on for it's lack of storytelling and bad art, but these three creators were at the top of their games in the 90s and we won't see comics like that maybe never again!

  • @TheJohno95
    @TheJohno95 4 роки тому +3

I was just watching one of your Dune videos and saw this! Awesomeness! The British Invasion of comics in the 1980's definitely changed the medium, but I would argue that Sandman from Gaiman did more to bring comics into the mainstream media, even though it was predated by Swamp Thing and Hellblazer. Comics in the 80's were mainly just looked on as trashy, easily digested kids' stuff that parents could buy their kids at the grocery store to avoid buying action figures. The 90's brought in more acceptance with the hoopla over the Death of Superman, but that waned quickly when people realized the comic store wasn't the new stock market. But, some of those readers stuck around when they encountered things like Sandman, that worked on a deeper level than dudes in capes beating the hell out of each other. Sandman even got attention when an issue won a World Fantasy Award and the medium was made ineligible after that since it was "only a comic". But all the little things....Like the mad desire of fans for back issues making the trade format into more of a thing. Which got trades in bookstores. And made comics the more accessible medium they are today. I love haunting the aisles of my local comic store, but I know a lot of people prefer to hit up their bookstore and not have to go to that mysterious realm of 4-color. So, I feel I can safely share my love of Sandman here without catching hate for it like my Dune opinions. And, just for the record, I'm going to stay away from talking about the new Sandman and Vertigo comics that are out right now. I honestly haven't formed an opinion. Except House of Whispers. It's awesome and I'll go on record as saying that.

Destruction would be my favorite character in this series, were it not for Barnabas! Delirium, Death, and Fiddler's Green/Gilbert are all close runners up. What a great story. Gaiman has called the first arc he did with Sam Keith 'awkward', but other than The Kindly Ones, it's the story I've read the most from the series. The Kindly Ones is likely my favorite arc, though there are some one-off issues which are brilliant: Song of Orpheus is a really great yarn.
It's nice to see Sandman getting some play so many years after it ended. Neverwhere might be my favorite of his novels, though I've read American Gods the most. If you haven't read A Study in Emerald, his incredible short story that crosses Arthur Conan Doyle and Lovecraft, I recommend it highly.

No way. My buddy convinced me to buy the omnibus a few years back and I tore through it. Great analysis, as always. If I remember correctly, Gaiman talked about a TV series in the works for Netflix. That was like 2 years ago. Haven't heard much about it since then. I feel like it might be hard to capture the vibe and eerieness of it all on screen, either way.
Edit: Just looked it up. Netflix ordered 11 episodes last year. At least Gaiman is heavily involved.

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I hope there isn't a show. I'm a huge fan of Gaiman's, and love Sandman--I actually have the first 8 issues, first printings--but I'd rather it remained a graphic novel. I'm not a big admirer of the American Gods show: It doesn't hold a candle to how it felt to read the book the first--or even second--time, which was a magical experience for me.
Adaptations of great works are like cocaine cut with 3/4 baking soda. Why settle for an adulterated taste, when you can go to the source and enjoy it in its purest form?
Just my opinion. Not trying to crap on everyone else's parade.

    • @houselorebridge
      @houselorebridge 4 роки тому +1

Josh Morris that’s a totally fair opinion, and I do agree with you about American Gods; I liked a couple of the show changes and most of the casting but it was overall lacking for me.

:) But... if there is ever a Sandman show, I'll probably break down and watch it. I just hope they cast Morpheus with someone awesome.
I actually think an actress like Tilda Swinton would be a better choice than a dude with muscles. She's got the acting chops; she's tall and thin; she has a British accent (for some reason I feel like Morpheus has to have a British accent); and she's played a man before (Suspiria remake). Casting a woman to play a male's part would help to give Morpheus that added otherworldly quality that I think he needs to make the show really work.
Sorry, got carried away there. Harrumph... No adaptations ever!

    • @houselorebridge

I'm curious if you have a copy of Sandman: Dream Hunters if just for the illustrations alone. Yoshitaka Amano, mainly of Final Fantasy fame, and to lesser extent Vampire Hunter D in concept art. One of the best illustrators of this generation leaves beautiful and lasting memories with each stroke. Even a first edition from 1999 won't break your bank and is worth a look into.

Sandman was the graphic novel that made me realize the sheer potential of the medium, the collaboration of visual and narrative. I was quite young when I first read it, and I was surprised to learn that sometimes, a single issue of comic will have multiple pencillers, inkers and colorists. It made me wonder how Sandman's art and words fit so perfectly.
One page that stuck in my mind was the one where the elf Nuala asks for Dream's love, to which he says that love can't just be given away like a trinket, and instead offers her a dream of his love. Nuala replied, "But I already have that, Lord."

M.R. Carey's Lucifer is actually quite comparable to Sandman. I loved Preludes and Nocturmes, but my interest waned a few volumes in. With Lucifer, I was hooked from the jump and it just captivated me all the way through. Dalliance with the Damned is one of the best short stories of all time.
But Sandman was truly amazing, and you're right that it was the first of its kind. Lucifer is the only thing that compares to it.

You MUST go checkout the audio production of this comic on Audible! It's absolutely the BEST performance I've ever heard on Audible. Goes along PERFECTLY with the comic book, IF you wanna do a read-along.

Look, if you are new to Sandman DO NOT start with Overture unless you're used to very heady and abstract stuff. The original Vol 1: Preludes and Nocturnes is a much better place to start and has a bit more of a grounded approach to get you into the world and the characters. Overture was written decades later, and is awesome, and a cool place to start when *re-reading* the series, but new readers should start at the original beginning of the series.

Thank you for making this video so I can show my friends how awesome the art really is....and the story is ...well for me the funniest and freakiest part is the "Cereal" Convention.

Right on, the graphic novel can be a superior story telling medium. Sandman is my fave with Death and Delirium my fave incarnations in the Family "D". History reads well in graphic novels too; Maus, Persepolis. I recommend "The Harlem Hellfighters" to anyone. If ever there was a story that should be made into a movie.. about the men of the 15th New York National Guard who fought and sacrificed everything on what was the breaking edge of the modern world.
I look forward to your novel. Looks magical and love the title :-)

I absolutely love The Sandman. The story was/is deliciously rich and detailed. Every character is so interesting. The Endless are some of the most interesting characters ever put on page.

Sandman is the greatest, but I strongly recommend against reading Overture first. Despite being a prequel, it contains major spoilers for the original run. Read Overture and the other spinoffs afterwards.

You do such an amazing job at introducing this series. I'm currently working on a video where I talk about 10 things I love about it and honestly will probs link your video if the audience isn't as familiar with the series or gets lost in my geeking out, if that would be fine by you!

Will you make more content of Sandman? I adore this graphic novel series, although I haven't read the newer ones (Overture and The Dreaming, with Daniel/Dream). I'll love if you make even an additional video about them. Thank you so much!

That and the Death Graphic Novels - The High cost of living & The time of your life
