Scourge of Fate is a great book about a Chaos Lord doing his last trial to become a Varanguard, gives you great insight about how Varanguard society works and give you a detailed account of how Slaves to Darkness warbands live in the Eightpoints and at the Varanspire.
Among other things, Varanguard see themselves as “paladins”, losing sense of personal gain and status, seeing service to Archaon as the greatest glory there is. They also see Archaon not only as their leader but as a philosopher-king, and there’s tidbits about how they make it a point to never give oneself fully to one True God :)
Highly recommend it.
I also recommend the book Scourge of Fate. It's excellent.

My history teachers will be quite disappointed of me, it took me years to get to this.

There is always the Scourge of Fate Novel which was great
The way you describe them puts me in mind of the Nazgùl in Lord of the Rings. Like how the Witch King is such a more interesting character with his backstory in the appendices. Also how they're both tier 1 generals / heroes the equivalent of any Good hero but also subjects that can be sent on a fetch quest if its crucial enough.
By far my favourite StD units. They are just so amazing.
I wish they'd release a second set of 3 for some more variation and focus, I can't help but think they treated the most epic of bodyguards as an after thought. Thanks for giving them some flavor Doug!
If you're taking requests, I've been wondering about the Eidolons of Mathalan myself. How are they created? What's the relationship between the Idoneth and a god of the old world? Anyways, love your videos. Your enthusiasm for the lore really comes through in them, makes it infectious.
So, 1 in 1.000 champions may perhaps take the trials. Of those, 1 in 10.000 may perhaps be worthy of joining archaon's elite. That means that, out of ten million champions, one joins the Varanguard? Does that make sense, given the massive scale of the Nine Realms?

Well, each realm is many times bigger than surface of our planet. And there are 7 of them with chaos warriors, and unknown amount of smaller pocket worlds. So this is not so absurd to me (well, this is aos, you MUST set your absurd standarts lower)

In case you didn’t know. The swords of chaos are in total war warhammer. And they literally have a mechanic with Archon called Gaurdion which gives him phisical residence

I’d say he succeeded. Whenever I hear or think of Archeaon, all I think about is Grimgor sneaking up behind him and kicking him in the Slaaneshi zone.

This should give you an incite into just how many Chaos worshippers there are in the Realms.

Absolutely! I don’t recall one by name but there is absolutely no reason to think there would not be any!
The chaos gods and archaon don’t care about gender, as long as you are useful to them in a way, you could be a snail and they would still use you

why are they garbage... the can kill every unit in one charge and with support they are really hard to kill
