    I just seasoned mine tonight. I’ll get it nice and hot and take cooking oil put some in a cup then I’ll take this mesquite seasoning grinder and put that in the cup with oil. Stir it up with a sauce brush then brush that oil and seasoning mixture on my grates. Then heat it back up. Basically same thing but I use the oil and seasoning.

    I finally got rid of my old gas grill, it was about 10 years old and I tried to clean it out and my scraper went through the bottom of it..completely rusted out. You should spray the oil before heating the grill. So its two steps, Step 1 heat up the grill for the burn-off (30 mins). let the grill cool. Step 2 now spray to season the grill and now heat up the grill for 30 mins

    • @SDSBBQs
      @SDSBBQs  2 роки тому +2

      Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you really don't want to let the grill cool. You want the pores of the metal to be open (hence warm) so that your spraying is more effective in soaking into the metal as opposed to just on the surface.

    You won't grill in the rain lmao. You must not be from Michigan, we will grill in 3 feet of snow but i also get a new grill every 2 years because i use a burner for wood to smoke meat for a couple hours before i cook it and using wood in a propane grill and using them in all weather can be hard on them but it's the easiest way to smoke meat because you have more control over the smoke and it's easier to keep from getting dirty smoke than with the grills that have a smoke box attached. I've never used pam or canola oil or whatever it was in your spray can to season a grill i usually just use a good amount of vegetable oil and rub it on everything while it's cold then turn it on and keep it around 250 for about 3 or 4 hours. Ill have to try the spray because it's probably easier to get it everywhere.

    • @SDSBBQs
      @SDSBBQs  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately I don't remember talking about not cooking in the rain, but using a spray can is much easier than wiping it in. Also there's really no need for multiple hour burn in.

I think the second time you said something like it was about to rain so you might not be able to. If you look up seasoning a new grill most say to do several hours at around 250.

      So I won't or don't use that grill in the rain because I have others that are covered, so no need. Guess I should have been more clear. And in my opinion burning a grill for hours is a waste of time. 30 minutes of high heat will do the trick. But to each his or her own. Thanks again for watching and your comments! Keep them coming!

  • @Ron-fw6bm

    Pam cooking spray...meh...really not ideal to season cast iron grates...at all. Ideally you want to use peanut oil, preferably, organic, high heat peanut oil. This can and should be used to season stainless steel grates too but ESPECIALLY on cast iron grates. Peanut oil has the longest hydrocarbon molecule chain of all oils and gives cast iron a beautiful, smooth, deep...DEEP black look like nothing else can. It also hardens and protects like no other oil. The process is lengthy though. Each coat should be applied as thin as possible. Wipe down the surface with a paper towel with the oil on it. Just enough to thinly coat it, not heavily at all. You then want to bake it for 1 hour at 400 degrees. Repeat the process for as many layers as you want but the more the better. Minimum should be 7 layers. Yes, it takes time and propane...lol. Time, propane, peanut oil and...patience. Only Master Grillers perfect the art of seasoning to such a degree and I am...A MASTER GRILLER!!! One must Master the season, lest the grill...season the Master. Become one with the grill else how else does one know when to turn the steak? Far be it from you to ever turn it prematurely...or too late. Nay, may you always turn the meat at just the right time.
    Alright, all nonsense aside...you also want to remove, not bake on any oil the manufacturer had on there before seasoning because Lord knows what they use for one (whatever they use is just to prevent rusting while in storage and transit and is likely not ideal for seasoning) and secondly you want just the peanut oil on there for that first coat.
    If you do feel like doing this process you would have to remove what is on there already. The best way to get it back to bare metal is to soak it with EZ-Off oven cleaner heavily, making sure every inch gets covered heavily with the oven cleaner then letting it sit in a thick, plastic bag (not a garbage bag) but a very thick plastic bag, preferably a clear plastic bag and let it sit in the sun and then overnight for at least 24 hours, then rinse it off very well. The bag needs to be closed insomuch as not to allow the oven cleaner to dry out and allow air to hit the bare metal surface, that would start it to rusting. Of course a heavily coated old piece of cast iron cookware may require a second application of EZ-Off and another 24 hours of soaking in it with lots of scrubbing in-between. You can do that anytime you want to just start over with your grates and season them proper. Most people would only do that with heirloom pieces of cast iron cookware that they love and want a beautiful season on. All of this applies to anything cast iron you want to season or re-season. Remember too, that anytime all the protection is removed from anything cast iron as soon as water and air hit it, it will begin to oxidize...rust. So get that first coat on as soon as the item is rinsed off and dried. Peace.
