You have literally saved the day. I was so bummed out that my Nintendo (which I have had since I was six) wasn't working, now it works like a dream. Thank you SO much!! (I'm going to go and play some Mario now)
The reason you have a problem with the springs locking on the nes and have to loosen the cartridge tray, is because there is a small portion on the front of the tray that needs to slide under the motherboard instead of resting on top of it. Loosen the 6 screws on the tray, slide it forward while gently pressing down on the front of the tray and you should feel it drop, then slide it back into place and screw it down. That should take care of your problem.
back in the day (early 200's) I bought an NES and from Amazon bought at 32-pin connector I think it was, changed it out and had an amazing NES...good vid my friend
I've heard a lot of mixed info in regards to using glass cleaner on carts. I use muti-purpose Windex which works great, but I've heard glass cleaners dry out, and eventually corrupt the cart.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, can't be arsed reading all the comments :/ If you don't slide the loading tray on properly then you will have issues with the tray not locking down. Slide the little lip type thingy under the front of the motherboard so that it catches, preventing it from lifting, then screw the motherboard down. Works a treat!
hey.... I just bought me a nes the other day & I must say this video will help me in the near future. by the way... the video was hilarious also😂😂😂 I was laughing as I was watching. thanks for sharing.... I appreciate it.
the lock out is what stops games that are PAL or some unlicensed. It was intended to lock out games. If you disable it, it helps make not only those games easier to play but it stops the flashing that nes' usually do.
The lockout chip is easier to “fix” with a fine tip fingernail tool, the metal is so soft you can literally just cut through it with almost no effort. Also, you should boil the 72 pin connector, not a chemical bath scrub down. After it’s been boiled in distilled water the metal comes out looking factory new... so shiny! Just make sure to fully dry before reinstalling.
I cleaned & straightened my pins for about 2 years and it would last a few months at a time. FINALLY I broke the bank & spent $8 on new pins :). Hell, most of us collectors are cheap (ironic lol). Nice vid. More Ppl need to know this b4 paying some retail store 60 bucks. ... if only the Genesis pins weren't soldered to the motherboard!
I think you forgot to mention to unplug the nes...(ZAP!) Nice video, I can only imagine the # of nes's that were thrown out when all they needed was a simple fix like this....I put a new 72 pin connector in mine and it works perfectly (you can buy them on e-bay for a few bucks) the only games that wont work on the first try are the really dirty games themselves....(which can be cleaned with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol.)
Hi Eric I found a NES outside in the cold walking home from work a few days ago. No joke, left near a building besides some train tracks. I swear saddest moment for me as a 32 year old adult and gamer. And yeah you're damn straight I rescued it!!! It was rained on and it's case is dirty scratched and not very damaged but yeah it is damaged, and sun faded. I don't think it's in bad condition, I think. I have no training or repair skills for game systems of any kind. The buttons don't seem to broken, the inside looks good. The AV and things on the back look good. I found no power cord or controllers I was going to go back to the place where I found them near a building to see if anything else was left but it snowed. MY problem is it's full of dirty, sand and grit and I want to make it my project to clean and fix it so long as I can with putting money into it that's not power cord, game or controller related. I can take pictures and would love some advice on what to do and how this video is very helpful but I have a mess to deal with. And I don't even know if it works yet. I still have yet to open it up. I've been looking for good help you'r video, I found yours to be very helpful. If you can, my email is sandman2783@gmail.com
Mine was weird. I hooked it up properly but when I turn it on, the red light just blinks. I don't even get a blue screen. If I do everything in the video, would that fix it or not.
I've did every single step..but in the end i still got a purple screen... I gave up..and just thru away the damn thing along with the games... Now that is rage quitting. Downloaded the roms to a raspi and im much happier... Emulation all the way from that moment on
I am not sure what is wrong with my NES. When I try to play the super mario brothers game with duck hunt on it, the screen will either be white, purple, or green. I dont know if it is the NES is messed up or if it's the game.. Do you have an idea??
Instead of windex cleaner I would use brass cleaner on the copper pins, it does a better job because brass is nothing but alloy made up of copper and zinc and this way you will not only clean the pins but protect them from corrosion and mold.
When im in Dallas Eric,I can show you how to properly Rebuild a NES! 2 very common mistakes most do, that most people miss! You yourself, said you dont know why you have to unloosen those 2 screws in the loading doc, if you loading dock was properly in place, the screws should be tight all the way! Again, not trying to be a butt about it, just trying to help! Me you, Mc D's Mike, and Game Chasers can meet up if you want! IM a nice guy, ask Mc D's Mike
I found a nes at a goodwill and when i tested it a few months ago it worked fine. I take it with me to college and plug everything back and...nothing...no light or screen display, i guess i gotta open her up and find out what's going on
The reason you dont have to push game down, is probably cause you over adjusted the pins on the 72 pin connector! Most down know how to properly put the loading dock back together, there is a slot on the motherboard, if you dont slip it on properly, the loading dock is gonna have issues with how you tightening the screws both on dock and outter shell!
This is really good! I'll come to this if my NES starts being a dick! Can you do more videos like this please? And also, whats that box on the bottom in the middle of the NES? Mine doesn't have that.
I bought an aftermarket 72 pin connector, because I tried fixing the original one, and it just didn't work. Bought one made in Taiwan (supposedly better than ones made in China) off ebay. Of my 11 games, I can only get like 7 of them to work. The other 4 just keep giving me the blue screen. The new pin connector is obviously tight. I removed the lockout device pin, not sure what else to do. Can you help me?
SNES is very different from the NES. I believe there is no lock out chip for it and you can't take it apart unless you order a special screw driver from Nintendo to even open it.
I need some help with this bud, i've done everything as explained on the video now my NES doesn't blink but it also doesn't shows anything on the screen
Try using some brasso, window cleaner, or rubbing alcohol (or all of them) on your games, and make sure your 72 pin connector and the games are dry before playing. Hope this helps.
its a region lockout chip, makes it so you cant play pal games and stuff, but from what i understand its kinda screwy and if the game or pin connector is dirty it will make the lockout chip think its a game from a different region even if its not, so good to disable no matter what imo but i believe theres like 50-100 games that have minor glitches when you disable it, i dont think any game breaking glitches tho
Should probably mention that you don't even have to push the game down anymore after removing the #4 pin. I always thought that was cool for some reason...
There is no point to cleaning the non contact areas of the pin connector or the contacts to the motherboard. These points have never been moved since it was assembled and should have the same continuity as in 1988. Just clean the game port pins. I have tried bending 2 pin connectors and both didn't work great. Try this and if you fail buy a new pin connector. I prefer to snip the lockout pin with a tiny pair of pliers. But whatever works I guess.
i get a grey screen and the red light. also I notice when I slide the cartridge in or pull it out, its not a snug fit. I assume it needs a ne 72 pin or atleast fix it?
8-Bit Eric Followed your directions to a tee. Cleaned the 72 pin connector, bent out the pins, disabled the lockout pin, cleaned all the connections on the board, cleaned all the connections on the games. Everything works like it was new again, first try every time. So awesome. Thanks so much for this vid!!!
I have a issue. When looking trough the trunk of my mother's car I found a very dirty nes in there under a used tire. When I tried to plug it in the absolutly nothing happened not even a light showed up. Can someone tell me what can I do to make it work again!?
also if u cover a credit card with a t shirt or something you can get it inside the pin connector and move it back and forth when I did that there was so much dirt in there my nes works like new after cleaning the pin connector and the motherboard
+Sarah Hikes 😂😂😂 I was gonna say are the cartridges clean. I have an old Zelda game that was dirty and it wasn't working and I was really mad about it until I bought me some acetone to clean it
when I turn on my NES, it gives me a solid red light when the game is in, but I always get a black screen. I haven't played my original NES in years and it was left in the attic. I tried cleaning the 72 pin connector but no luck, I still get the black screen. Do I need to get another connector or do I have to fix something with the motherboard?
mine was doing similar stuff. I replaced the 7805 power regulator. If you don't what looks like, it's the black thing with three legs by the power input. Cheap item, easy solder work. Fixed mine.
guess you getting ready vegas. Sin citty. Have Fun. all the great youtubers will be there hey gamester&pat you& Billy&jay&Mell& Roo&so much more hey. have fun..
Is there ANYBODY on the whole net, who knows SOMETHING about pitch and speed optimizing to different regions? :'( :'( I'm trying to obtain a Powerpak, and with that I would like to test games on it which were never released in Europe, but the problem is as you might now: The regionfree mod has two bugs: if you put a NTSC game into a PAL machine, (or vice versa) the videoframes will be a bit tighter, and the speed will be -16,6666666% (or speed up) and you get a -1 (or +1 on vice versa) little secund soundpitch.

Thanks Eric, I needed this. I had an extra NES that a buddy wanted and I needed to get it working for him, I appreciate the video.
A pleasure to connect with you here.
Looking forward to future videos.
Enjoy. Bill, Lynn, & friends of Bewitched!

I use the tips of a small nail scissors to clip the 4th pin, it is like using small pliers! Cool video
Thumbs up for keepin it PG

hahaha i dont take the cords off either, when you were putting it back together i was thinking "here comes an edit"
Thanks Eric. This worked like a charm. Now im gonna bang out some Wrestlemania Challenge.
Bang it hard

fun drinking game: drink every time Eric says "screw" or some variation of it lol.
Thanks. Fixed my Nes. None of the other videos worked half as well
Major throw back
Absolutely
Great video. Easy breezy.
great video man. i gotta clean my pins still and clean it. matter of fact, im going to do it right now!

I just made a deal for a couple NES consoles the seller described as having "Blinking Red light syndrome" I a hoping your method will fix them.
thanks for watching man, appreciate it!
This video helped me fix mine, thank u man.
Thank you for checkin it out
8-Bit Eric I tried this once and it worked but after it didn't thanks for this though

question... what does it mean when your cart clicks down like normal and then after a few seconds it pops back up?
Or just wiggle the cartage left and right when it's on. Most of the time, it works!
love your vids!!!!
cool video . now i can do it thanks
I subbed. 1 question, did you need an anti static strap for your ankle or wrist to protect yourself from static?
I don't think that's neccessary for a nes but it won't harm anyone.
Hi mate here from oz love all your videos. Was just wondering should my power light flash when no games are loaded in the console. Thank you.
What does the lockout chip do/why disable it?

It's fucking legit
Thx man
thanks for the knowledge!!
thanks dude my black part to put load the games work
yeah it is good idea
You're a boss bro
do you have any clue at all why they put a lock out chip in the NES. To me it makes no sense to me to have the chip in it.
i did all the pins. also i mentioned that the loading dock wont work if the screws are too tightened. i guess you didnt hear that.
I need some help with this bud, i've done everything as explained on the video now my NES doesn't blink but it also doesn't shows anything on the screen

Yeah prolly have to either tighten them with a clothespin or get a new one
Try boiling the 72 pin connector I boiled my 72 pin connector I did that same thing I fixed 6 NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS
nice never heard of that
thanks!
whats the lock out pin what does it do.and why did you lossen it....just wondering i have 2 of those console and they dont work i want to fix them.
its a region lockout chip, so after you disable youll be able to play PAL games
Thanks

never mind, figured it out
lol yeah sometimes
I followed everything and I only get a solid grey screen. I also then used contact cleaner and same thing. Any suggestions?
Never mind, turned out I had dirty cartridges
+Sarah Hikes 😂😂😂 I was gonna say are the cartridges clean. I have an old Zelda game that was dirty and it wasn't working and I was really mad about it until I bought me some acetone to clean it
Nice bro !! Can u fix mine ?
i like to wipe everything and adjust everything, just my preference. thanks for watching dude.
yup, plus back then Nintendo was really strict about their games.
I did all this now all I get is Blue Screen. Fix???
I can't get the screws of mine I've tryed different screwdrivers what I do?
when I turn on my NES, it gives me a solid red light when the game is in, but I always get a black screen. I haven't played my original NES in years and it was left in the attic. there is no lockout chip on snes

lol ummm did you have it plugged in when you were doing this?
Alternatively for $65k James rolfe will come to your house and do it for you!! Lol

Yeah i just did it actually, games work much better, not perfect, but better than before. Now i just have to get some good games (donations accepted)
It's really super easy to take apart and put together only like 10 or so screws and 3 connector pins.
***Goes in the attic to find nes***
Btw what does the lockout pin do?
***** nice. Thanks for your response. I'll be looking at my nes and do that. Thanks for your response. I appreciate it
