Your video is going to be used as reference for eternity. These consoles suffer from the same symptom. I bought one 4 years ago used it for a little while then stored it. I recently took it out and the trouble began. I have to play with it by moving the cartridge. It works sometimes. I am now thinking of following your method of cleaning it and ordering a new 72 pin since they run cheap.
Most of the time after cleaning the cartridge, I push reset and while keeping it pressed, I move the cartridge to either the left or right gently then release the reset button. And 9 out of 10 that works for me and has for over 20 or more years. And of course if it is real bad, I take the NES apart and clean the 72 pin connector.

Removing the 72 pin connector, brushing it with alcohol, along with q-tips and alcohol cleaning the motherboard pins and any grounding surfaces worked. There was haze of corrosion on the motherboard pins and motherboard grounding points👍
I've got 2 old NES consoles that work intermittently but that sometimes get the flashing red light. The flashing red light is actually why I have 2 of them. Growing up, my brother and I would just rotate them if one wasn't working haha. I'll have to give all of these methods a try. Thanks so much for the tutorials!

Perfect video! Thank you so much for the concise video without all the “I love to listen to my own voice” ones out there (tho I must say, your voice is pleasant to listen to). I’m so glad I decided to just do it and clean the inside as there was plenty of dust in it. One thing I want to share is that when I tightened the lower front right screw to the lower plastic tray when reinstalling, I must have gone a bit too much as the tray wouldn’t lock. I loosed it up about 1.5 turns and it was fine. So much better than jiggling every game.
Great video, personally, I use a cartridge connector called blinking light win. It’s a full 72 pin connector replacement which will make it so that the cart just snaps in and you don’t press down, it just connects. Only bad thing is that the cart is gripped really tight, which can be good, but also bad when removing the cart. It makes the nes region free!
Cart adaptors like that ruin ypur game chips. In a very short time the gold on the cart pins will be gone making the cart useless
@@jeremyspigner1320 I’ve had my blinking light win for 4+ years, I’ve had no issues with any of my nes carts. It does have a tight grip, but it still works flawlessly as do my games. I don’t think you can even get it anymore.
What i love is there is allot of people with the nes and they believe a blinking light is a problem with it and it is not. Its how the system works. Wish people would educate them selves about the system. The moment you add stuff like a blinking light fix you have ruined the system. What do i know obly heen gaming since 85 when the nes was released

I have an nes dated 1988 on the motherboard no adaptor on it and every single game plays first try. Putting them in hard bends the contacts and scrapes the copper off the game board. Mabie I am lucky with mine
Quarantine made by family bring out the old nintendo we had hidden in the garage but we had a hard time getting the games to play. Each time we had to call my older brother in or wait 15 minutes to get it working. This helped so much, thank you!!!
Scrubbing bubbles works too. They work hard so you don't have to.

You can also boil the 72-pin connector in water for 15-30 minutes, which causes the contacts to spring back to their original positions and thus grip the cartridge more tightly. Better than replacing it with a potentially inferior replacement which might fail rather quickly due to oxidisation.
Another option is to cut one of the pins on the lockout chip. I did both, actually: boiling the connector and cutting the pin.

Not one of the pins, the fourth bottom pin. Any other pins can damage and not read the game roms
I would be so scared to boil my pin-connector, so that's one thing I'd never do.
@@TucBroder I initially found it scary too, but as I already had a spare one, I tried it out and it worked amazingly well. My NES has been running with the boiled original connector ever since and I've not needed to repeat the procedure, nor use the replacement part. Have since done it to several other NESes as I restored them. Never had any trouble caused by the boiling. Just make sure it is thoroughly dry before reinstalling and powering up.
Here I was about to do open heart surgery on my NES only to find out that the second way worked the whole time. I appreciate this a lot!

I just bought two second hand NES consoles. One had a blinking white screen and one had a blinking red screen. Followed this guide to clean the contacts of the game cart, inserted and removed a a bunch of times and did the little jiggle the game cart move once you push down the 72 pin connector to the locked position and now both work one the first try about 70% of the time (probably because the panther is too strong)

Ah the good old days. Did anyone just want to throw the control into the TV after playing paperboy all day and your getting ready to beat the first week and it blinks out
You can disable the lockout chip on the motherboard (3193A), by bending back the 4th pin from the left. The light will literally never flash again. I just did this to an NES I bought recently, that I could not get a stable connection on, no matter what I tried. Now it works better than when it was new.
Thought the 72 pin replacement i made on one i bought off eBay totaled the sucker. Found out, thanks to you, that leaving it in the UP position works like a charm!
I love you! Step 2 worked for me. i was going to open the nes to clean the pins, but I saw your step 2, give it a try, and all my games work now. My nes is save from my hands now.
I thought cleaning the game with isopropyl alcohol would do it, but it didn’t. But then, moving at side to side was the thing that fixed it, I guess it helps with the metal contacts. Thanks very much!
Missed the 6th fix. Delete Pin 4 on the CIC Lockout chip on main motherboard. Works a charm and lest you play ANY region.

You should absolutely clean the mother board contacts, as well as rebend the pins on the 72-pin connector if they've flattened out. You can also always disable the lockout chip to get rid of the blinking red light forever and ever.....and ever!

You forgot one option: push the game down and stuff another game in on top of it to hold it down. Worked 9/10 times! Great video though!
The famous blinking light win from arcadeworks.
I recommend putting some rubbing alcohol on the cartridge pins and then sticking it into the system wet and then taking it out, and then pushing it back in, and then cleaning the cartridge pins of the cart, and doing this process again a few times. This will get alcohol into the cartridge connector's pins and take some of the grime out, and maybe that helps. It did with my Sega Genesis. You can also just buy replacement cartridge connectors. You'll know your cartridge connector is cleaner when you try to clean your cartridge pins again and there's no more dirt on it. I mean it's using a cartridge as a squeegee.

Cleaning everything is a good idea. I disable the CIC chip on my NESs. That way I don't have to worry about it and it is also region free now.

Hello thanks for the content. I wanted to let everone know how my dad fixed the blinking on the nes back in the 80's when my brothers an I were very young. We all blew in the cartridge and sometimes it worked. But did the blowing actually work. Maybe. When you put the cartridge in evertime, sometimes the contacts wiill contect and the game works. So not necessarily it was blowing in the cartridge. My father to the machine apart and bent the clips for a tighter fit. Worked every time.

This is what worked for me. Picked it up , open thrash lid, dropped it, got in my car and picked up a better version AVS system. No time to fck around with home remedies.

Your fix number 3, having the cartridge in the up position only works with a replacement, non-OEM 72 pin connector. The original connector will not allow the game to be played unless it is fully pressed down because of the pin design.

Well thank you,just brought my nes and snes from attic, NES was collecting dust a lot,and it had mario 2 in the slot this whole time, games take some strenght to put in the slot. I had blinking red light,and jiggling around stopped that LOL! , still do not have the tv cable,waiting on that tomorrow,so i hope my nes works, cant wait!

worked...I had to screw the front of the plastic lid over the cartridge sideways screwing one of the two front srews a bit less, to make it work.

The rubbing alcohol worked great but my system I have to jam something in between the game an the system to kinda set it fully in place, it locks in like it should just needs a bit more of pressure I suppose to make that connection but other then that it works thanks for the advice

I was thinking this was going to be the popular "joke" fixes from over the years... A few of them did make it but in different variations than I remembered.
You used the 1 Up card on the cartridge but you could have also used the 1 Up console cleaner cartridge on the consile itself. I have gotten several consoles to work just fine by buffing those pin connectors with a console cleaner cartridge from 1 Up card.

I try to put the Cart in at the earliest point it can go down and push it slightly left and hold down the reset as I hit power. Doesn't work the first after everytime but works eventually
None of these worked for me but I blew VERY HARD on the cartridge and it worked
Except blowing into the cartridge is bad, since the moisture of your breath would cause the cartridge to corrode faster.

great video. I was surprised you used the 1UP card to clean the game cartridges. You can use a q-tip with a dab of rubbing alcohol to clean the games like you did on the mother board back and front.

That was pretty good and i feel confident in taking mine apart to clean it! But i think i made a few thing's loose when i was transporting it in a box and i put it down roughly. Now the area that holds the game won't stay down. But even if i hold it down the light blinks and the connections area seems loose because it gets static if i move the wire's. No picture just a pink a then black screen blinking off and on again. Do you have any idea what i can do or what it might be? Thank you, JC

I had to take it apart but it wasn't too terrible AND IT WORKED! It's my original from my childhood and it was pretty dusty in there. I used qtips and alcohol and made sure to not leave any cotton fuzz behind. There was one tricky part though. Once I screwed it in, I tested the spring action on the case where you insert the games. THANKFULLY SO BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T BUDGE! I just guessed at loosening the screws just a smidge and it worked. BUT it happened again. I had 1 successful go round at playing dr mario and decided to play super mario. Once I was done with that it was stuck in the down position 🤬🤦🏼♀️ so i had to take the cover off and ever so slightly loosened one of the screws that was in the black case that appeared to be tighter than the others YAY... Buuut it happened again. I really didn't want to take it apart again... Not that it's hard... I just didn't wanna. So, I don't know what makes me do things sometimes but this time, instead of taking the case off, I just tried to slightly loosen the 2 screws that are in the center of the exterior cover & BAM! Good as new. Next step is to take these controllers apart and see what's rattling around in there and see if I can figure out why one of them randomly decides to not let me move left 🤬🤣😂🤣😂 good times!

So one of the last things you took apart was the one tiny screw out of the half rectangle thing next the vga port to flip the motherboard. I have done that but cannot for the life of me get the screw to connect the screw lines it's suppose to go into. Any tips on that or could you make a video showing how to get the screw back in? I've been working on this alone for 3 hours and I don't know what else to do.
