Loved the first one for the suspense, second one for the action and this one for the atmosphere. None of the following sequels and prequels had anything of these three aspects.
I would argue that Prometheus and Covenant have the visuals. Resurrection has no suspense, mediocre action, a goofy atmosphere, and shitty visuals lol.
Such a wonderful video, guys! I love Alien 3 despite it being deeply flawed. I saw it at 15 and was hypnotized by it. I remember telling my friend in biology class with great surprise, "I saw Alien 3. It's really good." Like I was surprised at how I liked it. He looked at me like I grew a second head. Fincher's direction is deeply compelling despite the script and production problems. In James Swallow's book, Dark Eye: The Films of David Fincher, Swallow says that the movie was being edited in LA near the Rodney King riots, and Fincher hoped that the building with the film would burn down.
Definitely flawd I saw this on release I was 5 years old my parents took me to see it I didn’t like it on release and didn’t see it again till I got the trilogy on vhs in 95 which came with the special edition version of aliens
Ripley always held the rank of Lieutenant. Her position on the Nostromo was as the Warrant Officer. She was not stripped of her rank. In Aliens, after the Weyland/Yutani board of inquiry, she had her flight credentials revoked, not her rank. The company then agreed to reinstate her flight credentials if she went on the mission to the LV-426 colony with the marines. Hope that helps!
It's a classic trilogy and part 3 perfectly closes it off. All other movies can seriously be ignored. No AVP our prequels, just these 3 classic stories and every Alien fan is good to go.
Im glad Alien 3 didn’t end up a story about how Ripley, Newt, and Hicks ran around the galaxy holding hands while they fought the mean aliens. That woulda been some lame cookie cutter shii. Alien 3 is a dark and hopeless punch to the jaw and reminds you of the ultimate fate of anybody unfortunate enough to come across the xenomorph. Both versions offer a unique experience and helped expand the lore in one of biggest ways with the idea of the alien taking on the characteristics of the host. Ive always enjoyed this movie and its probably the one I rewatch the most now days.
Assembly Cut is the best version of the movie by far. A little long but it helps a lot. Also, I can totally buy at the end of Aliens that the queen smuggled some face huggers on board, but man, never thought about it getting through the glass. Its a missed opportunity once again not having Newt and Hicks in the movie. Newt could have EASILY been infected before Ripley saves her in the end of Aliens. Oh well,
I am grateful to have the assembly cut on my quadrilogy DVD box set. So many additional scenes and plot twists that in many ways it seems like a different film. I much prefer this over the theatrical version.
@@blabbercast Oh yeah, I would love to see another video if you do. With the assembly cut you have more moments with a lot of the prisoners and (even though arguably it still feels a little rushed) you have the romance between Ripley and the Dr explored more. For me it went from a 3/5 to a 4/5 easy.
Michael Biehn is very underrated. He has done some awesome stuff. In regards to sequel films, I really hope someone will make an Alien: Hadley's Hope were we see the colony be destroyed.
The one credit I always gave Alien 3 is that it portrayed life how life can go. Not every part of life is super-entertaining like a movie. Sometimes life is boring and dull and bleak like Alien 3 is, and your favorite people die, and misfortune happens. This film being the way it is really gives a realistic view of following a story of someone's life. If Alien 3 was action packed and exciting, it would seem like a fabricated story. Like the cameras knew that the 3rd act of Ellen Ripley's life was gonna be a slow, depressing, downer, but they followed her anyway to finish telling her story, as opposed to the "cameras" following a character and every act of their life is unrealisticy entertaining and exciting. I hope what I'm trying to convey gets across and makes sense to whomever reads this.
Very intelligent POV. It holds a more somber tone throughout. As we said, certainly an enjoyable film even with all the mess behind the scenes. Enjoyed reading this perspective!
For me Alien3 stands out from original trilogy because of the score. Goldenthal's music fits the mood and style of movie to the point (saying this also as Goldsmith's and Horner's fan). It might be because despair and fatigue of "fighting" with alien just allows for deeper emotional layer. From this point of view the trilogy is nicely structured: first encounter and pure horror of escape without real chance to fight, second encounter and first attempt to fight back that ends again in fleeing. For me it makes sense that now when alien first time "follows" Ellen, she ofc tries to fight back (no escape possible this time) but the whole movie has a feeling of despair, fatigue and hopelessness. In the end she escapes again, but this time somewhere where alien can't hurt her anymore.
I was only 18 when this came out so was able to go and see it as i was only 5 when the first one came out in 79 and 12 when the second one came out in 86 so never got to experience them in the cinema although i made up for it watching them on VHS as watched them before this and loved the first two and hearing this would be close to the first one and knowing that was a total classic i thought this would be amazing and yeah in some ways it was but some of it was also unexceptional not a repeat of the first one at all but did still enjoy it for my first Alien film in the cinema and did have a great cast of mainly British actors apart from Sigourney Weaver Charles S Dutton etc but i was disappointed Charles Dance was killed off so early in it as he and Sigourney had a great chemistry and he was incredible in it for how long he was in it and enjoyed the sparring he had with Brian Glover who was also awesome and killed off too quickly! Also killing off Hicks and Newt spoilt it for me as was looking forward to seeing them again but didn't detract from my enjoyment of it although still not the film i thought it would be and to kill Ripley off was huge and a total gamble sure if Sigourney didn't want to carry on which we all know this was supposed to be her last you have to somehow give her a happy ending by maybe escaping and living a happier and peaceful life free from fighting Aliens and without the main Heroine you simply don't make anymore but of course we know what happened money talks and BS walks as they gave her bundles of cash and more control over things to come back for the 4th film Alien Resurrection which ok wasn't great was by no means terrible unlike AVP 1&2 and Alien Covenant as i actually liked Prometheus it dared to be different as obviously was a prequel to get to the first Alien but Covenant was a let down for me! Getting back to Alien 3 i also watched the Assembly Cut and wondered why some of the scenes were cut as might have actually made the film better imho also Sigourney had the bad ass head shave before Demi Moore did for GI Jane and actually thought it suited her 👍🏻💪🏻🙏🏻
As much as I love ALIENS, it has one major flaw with it. How the xenomorphs are depicted. They’re not scary. They come across as dumb swarming bugs. It’s the exact opposite of the original film. The alien in the first is terrifying. It’s savage and practically unstoppable. In ALIENS, had the company actually informed the marines about what they were getting into, had the properly prepared etc, it wouldn’t have gone the way it did. It makes the aliens seem very weak as an antagonist. This was something we heavily discussed in film school years ago when it comes to franchising. Once a turn in tone is made, it makes it very difficult to return to the roots. So A3 trying to be like the original again actually ended up harming the script. They brought in a bunch of new fans who wanted action and more action then those who preferred the first were now being left behind. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t. The series has been unable to recover since then. A3 depicts the xenomorph better than 2 does but 2 is a much better movie.
Insightful and I can definitely see that. Can't have it both ways with tone. Must have been an epic discussion in film school for sure. Thanks for watching!
Good take R4R 4R4. I agree A2 does make the xenomorphs look like a swarm of insects vs A1. Cause I love the 1st 2 films so much, I've never been able to watch A3 all the way through. I like Aliens better than Alien. The thing about Aliens that turns the movie for me is when the majority of the marines die in one swoop. I understand it because of the overconfident doubting the enemy premise, but I just really loved the group. They set it up so good leading up to that encounter to make you feel like you were a part of the team, then they die cause Gorman is having a nervous breakdown & wasn't really qualified to lead the team.
Well, agree to disagree, aliens I dont feel make the aliens any less terrifying. Yeah I guess it makes the xenomorphs space bugs, but James Cameron did take inspiration from star ship troopers. Also when Dan Bannon, wrote the script he took some inspiration from real world insects, most notably the hawk wasp, for the concept of the Alien, Ridley and Giger just elaborated on that concept, a parasitic creature. Cameron wanted to do a more action based film rather than just remaking the original. Alien and Aliens I find compliment each other. It felt like a natural progression for the franchise. Problem with Alien3 is they didnt have a clear idea of what to do unlike Alien and Aliens. If they just stuck with 1 script and went for it, plus too many chiefs in the kitchen as it were with alien3, if the studio just let Fincher get in with it, might have turned out much much better
Of course, returning to horror was going to alienate the fans but, I do still love that they went for a more gothic horror vibe. It was the perfect return and it could've been a pretty solid end to the trilogy with horror/action/horror and the looming sci-fi elements because at its heart Aliens will always be sci-fi. I think that's the problem with horror, it usually doesn't work as a sequel since we're accustomed to the threat, and the unknown aspect is gone. So, when you have to make a sequel the best course of action is probably to turn it into a comedy like what Evil Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street did or go into the action genre like Aliens. Since action and horror already work well together it's kind of like the logical step.
One version of the opening involved Newt being impregnated then the queen chestburster crawling into Ripleys mouth. The beginning is like a fever dream mostly lol
Experienced Alien War in London it was quite the trip at the end everyone just ran out the last door straight into a busy shopping center like lunatics .
Had the Alien Experience in London also a few years back where you run through the corridors of LV with a Marine trying to escape the Aliens it was expensive but an amazing experience as i went to it with my mates once
No no. Ripley was granted temporary marine rank of LT. For the mission to Hadley's Hope. She was an educated lady with flight experience, thats why. It had nothing to do with her Nostromo contract.

I watch Alien 3, but I always thought they made the wrong movie. I always thought part 3 would take place on Gateway Station. While Ripley was searching for Newt, Bishop could have implanted an embryo in Hicks. Bishop isn’t as trustworthy as they thought. Ripley didn’t trust him in the beginning, for good reason. When they get back to Gateway all he’ll breaks loose.
The whole Alien taking on characteristics of its host was a stupid thing this Alien was running around because it came out of a dog.... The Alien is meant to be a perfect organism it doesn't need to change its structure.
I needed Hicks to die. What made the Alien series special at the time was having a female protagonist. At the very least, with or without Hicks, Ripley needed to close out the trilogy against “the company”.
