Another great episode Tim! Thanks again for the firewood and the chance to operate that 2038R and grapple. I wanted to clarify for your viewers that while I did build this splitter at home, this is just my version of a mechanical type splitter that has been around for years and not my invention. There are various versions of these splitters available for sale online if someone wishes to purchase one. Thanks again and let me know if you need my help to run some of your tractors again!
Would it be faster to split a large amount then use the front bucket to scoop and load the pile? Only problem I would see is getting dirt in with it if not on concrete like in the video.
@@SLCFarms Very true. I have done it a number of different ways, just depends on how big of a hurry I am in. If someone else is there to run a second machine it changes things too. We have used a rock bucket to pick up firewood and lets all the dirt fall out.
I enjoy it when you share your post with another. This was a great series and I liked the splitter on the end of the backhoe. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
I just watched Neil's video where you guys made all that firewood from that huge oak tree. Wow! That was amazing! He said to check out your channel & let you know that I came here from Dig Drive DIY. I know these videos were from three years ago, but better late than never! And if I'm lucky, I'll see you in the next one!
Excellent combination Tim and Neil are; pleasant, interesting, and their personalities are different enough to combine into something more entertaining as well.
That’s a neat application that you’ve done, Neil and it’s obvious you’re quite accomplished in using it. Fun to watch. Great team effort of making short work of a big ole oak. Christy, you were great with the video!
I am blown away that there was a concrete slab under all those attachments. Seriously, I can't believe all those things fit into your buildings, and the backhoe adaptation is just awesome. There is clearly a learning curve, but what a great concept.
While Neil was running it, I had a feeling it’s harder than he made it look. Great looking set up though and I was amazed how easily it split through those giant rounds
Another great video to watch. Tim, you and Neil work out great together. That must have been several trip from the woods to the basketball court carrying all the wood.
Tim, you never gave us a close-up look at the splitter. I kept hoping for a detailed look. Very handy and simple. On a quick change head it would be great. Good luck.
I really like that backhoe log splitter design. Could you do a quick follow up video that shows it a bit closer and throw a yardstick on it so I can get some dimensions for making my own.
"It's really easy on your back." That's been my justification for buying all my tractor implements recently. Back injuries are no fun and are very expensive.
Back on the 1950s my grandfather built a spliter for his old Fordson Major steel wheel tractor . It was a wood structure that he mounted on the back & used the p-t-o to lift a steel block about 1’x1’ with a wedge welded to it , you rolled the round under it , then he had a trip that let it fall , one day a car driving down the road , pulled in his drive way & asked grandpa if he minded if he watched , no , - the next yr Massy Ferguson came out with the first commercial splitter
Will be there it's my buddy and my other buddy that I like to watch. It's the best of both worlds hi guys. Hope you all are doing well? Neil I am still looking for that hat in the mail :-)
Good morning GP! This splitter has been a very useful tool that I couldn't be without now. Just to clarify though, while this is a homemade splitter it is not my original idea. The mechanical splitter idea has been around since the late 1980's but just aren't commonplace for whatever reason. Great to see you here. Take care!
Awesome 👍! I am happy that you got to run a full size John Deere backhoe! I really enjoy running my cousin's John Deere 310s' when my dad and I borrow them 😁!
Good stuff guys!! I do like the comment at the end lol outdoor wood stove keeps the gym member ship cost down🤣🤣. But to be honest he is right. More tools which a man needs!
Tim you might have save me some money. I purchased the Stihl MSA 200 C a couple of years ago. Now I see Stihl has the 220 available. My thinking is it's bigger so it must be better. After watching this video I might hold off on the 220. One reason I might still buy the 220 is the wife likes to run the 200. She calls it her saw. I do have a couple of gas chainsaws but the battery power saw as so nice. Thanks for the another great video.
Great video that's a very ingenious log splitter. Neil have you tried attaching cross wedges to split smaller dimension logs? Just wondering if it would work.
I think he could sell those like hotcakes. I could see alot of people using this. I'm sure there's a way to make them for the 2 series and up with a country back road engineering.
That is a very cool "bucket"! One thing to keep in mind when it's comes to tractor hydraulic power is you can always trade between force and speed/distance by changing the mechanical and/or hydraulic geometry. For example let's say you have 2100 psi (lb/in²) of pressure. A hydraulic cylinder with a cross sectional area of 3 in² will get you 6300 lbs of force from the cylinder (I don't know the backhoe cylinder's area; I'm just guessing) Then when designing the backhoe splitter let's say you use a couple of mechanical linkages that cut the speed the splitter moves at to ½ of the cylinder's speed. You now double the force again, to 12,600 lbs. So the question isn't does Johnny have enough hydraulic power to split wood? The question is does Johnny have enough hydraulic power to split wood at a decent speed? I suspect it does...
The first time that I saw a hydraulic wood splitter in the70's I was floored! Wow! I don't need to use my axe anymore??? Well yes, you still need it, was the reply, just not as much!
Would it be a little more productive to split several on the ground and then grab multiple at one time with the grapple bucket? Nice attachment for sure though!
Hi Neil I ended up buying that 310E backhoe. I also have an outdoor wood boiler for heat and was wondering if you would be interested in emailing me a set of plans and measurements of the splitter end you made up? I would pay something for your trouble. I thought it would be easier to get what works instead trial and error on my end.
I'm wondering if you could do a short video of the dimensions of the splitter. I have some 42" dia oak and a JD 310D waiting for a splitter like yours. I'm in SW Michigan, thanks
Slick attachment. I'd buy one for the rare occasion I have to split wood. Looks like a business in the making to manufacture these. Should've patented it. Seems like a compact tractor would be able to do this pretty well. Maybe not a subcompact. Idk. Maybe some type of knurling on the rollers would help.

Nice 👍🏼 I’ve thought about building one for my BX23S but don’t know if it has the grunt needed

That splitter on the backhoe is really cool.
Thank you Tim for introducing us to your friend Neil, went to his channel and subscribed with him, wow what a treasure.
I love the drone views. The operator did a great job! The splitter was a great idea and a very useful tool.
@@allysonhanks9159 Not a problem, I always enjoy having friends.
Always easier watching someone split wood than doing it yourself . Sure makes it easier , for sure .
I enjoy it when you share your post with another. This was a great series and I liked the splitter on the end of the backhoe. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Great video on the spliter! Thanks for having Neil on! I subscribed to his channel yesterday.
Real neat split and load with the backhoe really handy for the big chunks. Saves time and back breaking work!
Good morning Tractor Times with Tim it looks like every one had some fun and stayed safe doing it.
ur friend Neil has a great channel too, been watching him for a good while as i found thru splitting wood and have stayed since.
💥 Thanks Tim, great camera work Christy! I'll be sure to check out Neil's channel.
*Keep on tractoring!*

Oh the toys you men have! Love it..now going to Neil's channel and watch him push snow..
Wow I was totally wrong! F750. Very nice. Cool splitter for the backhoe :)

My neighbor built one for his backhoe a few years ago. He now loves to split firewood. lol Cheers.from Va.

That was a good episode. Teamwork and fun, all at the same time.
Works perfect with those big rounds. That is a clean old backhoe
man I really like that splitter. may have to copy that design and build one just to see if it would work on my small Kubota.
Awesome invention for a backhoe log splitter! Split and load all in one!
While Neil was running it, I had a feeling it’s harder than he made it look.
Great looking set up though and I was amazed how easily it split through those giant rounds
Great vid especially the instructions. Tanks
The overhead shots on this one are amazing, great camera work. Soo many toys in one shot :D
Nice video tim and kristie and the drone did a great job looks beautyful 👌👌
Another great video to watch. Tim, you and Neil work out great together. That must have been several trip from the woods to the basketball court carrying all the wood.
What a great attachment. Thanks for the demo
That backhoe operator has potential. Keep practicing and you'll start to get it down.
Looked like fun. Great drone work. Thanks for making my morning......
He has a very nice setup for dealing with wood.

Time got away from us! We were having too much fun. Sorry! Perhaps Neil’s channel will have a closeup?
Hey Greg. Tim is right in that I have some close up videos of this splitter over on my channel. Thanks for checking it out!
I like this! Very neat. I can see how good this would work by myself.
Tim Neal this is very interesting never seen anything like this make so much sense to have something like this thanks
God Bless All

That will make some great firewood, really cool homemade attachment, great video folks 👍🏻
Super video!! Sve ste lijepo objasnili, nije sporo, uvjeravam vas da nije, jer sve što čuva kičmu, je dobro!! A naš život je ubrzan bespotrebno!!!
Folks at home- this is easy after a couple thousand hours of practice- I'm not there yet
Neil is a very skilled operator!
Agreed.

Great idea. It it would work in Johnny 2, I want one for my 2032r
Great gadget.
And a nice looking F750 as well.
I see a Deere backhoe in your future! Have a good Palm Sunday, God Bless.

Ingenuity at it best right there! Great for big rounds! Neil everyone with a tractor needs a grapple, out of all my attachments I use it the most.

You might have enough power to use it with J4!
Pretty slick idea. I liked the engineering.

I bet that the Jonny family of tractors was very happy that the 310D Deere was visiting. They are kinda related.
what a clever attachment

Cool I have thought about making a splitter somehow with my loader
Great video. I want some time on a multi function machine
Nice Video Tim.
It would be interesting to see if Johnny could spit wood.
TIM! Save some of those rounds for table tops!
Awesome machine
Very cool!
Build one would love to see it. So I could make one for my backhoe on my little tractor.
I've got an old 1969 Bucyrus Erie dynahoe 190. Any chance you can post a blue print on how you made this attachment? I want to build one for myself.
I was thinking he could weld some ridge lines across the pipe.
Do you have plans to build one of these for my JD 310?? Love this product
some decent size wood
Could you have loaded split would faster with the grapple bucket the two machine's work good together thanks for the videos
The difference between men and boys is the price of the toys!

@@allysonhanks9159 Hi Allyson :)
I can't possibly be the only person who, when Neil is speaking, hears the voice of Kevin Costner?
I get that a lot for some reason. I can't hear it but have now had about a dozen people mention it.
@@digdrivediy Hey, it's a good voice! 😉👍🙂
pretty daring running that dump and trailer without dot # and name on the truck
Entirely legal. As long as I stay in state here in Indiana .
Nice truck
Looks like maybe a 4 way splitter thumb would make that a little quicker to get smaller pieces , cool idea though!
Make one for Johnny 👏👏
Do you have prints on how it’s made or is some making them? I’m running a Kubota K71
Would it be a little more productive to split several on the ground and then grab multiple at one time with the grapple bucket? Nice attachment for sure though!
could you reverse the wedge and and have it split in the opposite direction? or would that put too much stress in a twisting motion?
very slick 😀

Running your small machine at full throttle helps with multi function on the backhoe.
Very kewl!
Tim, maybe you should have reduced idle on the tractor to prevent splitting the logs when you intended to pick up the logs?
I'm wondering if you could do a short video of the dimensions of the splitter. I have some 42" dia oak and a JD 310D waiting for a splitter like yours. I'm in SW Michigan, thanks

Maybe its just me but that Neil Koch kind of sounds like a young Kevin Costner.
There's another one with the Kevin Costner sound alike. I've heard that from quite a few folks now. Hopefully it is a good thing...
It would be VERY interesting to see if that splitter would work on Johnny 2. If it would, I want to buy a splitter from him.
