- Nickel Creek performs "21st of May" off their new album, A Dotted Line, available now on Nonesuch Records. NickelCreek.com iTunes: smarturl.it/nickelitunes
Sean wrote this song on May 20th, 2011, the day before the supposed rapture as predicted and advertised by Bay Area pastor Harold Camping (whose point of view he sings it from). It was a close call but we made it.
Oh man... this was my mom's favorite band. She passed away on the 21st of May.
This beautiful song is already a classic.
Nickel Creek= musical geniuses.
Instant classic, red-hot flatpicking! Hats off to Sean Watkins.
is he flat picking or finger picking? I guess he might be switching between the two.
It's all flatpicked. He's picking out the melody and crosspicking the fills. Easier said than done!
RandyHooHa yeah . I feel like I've seen him flat pick with thumb and pointer finger while picking with index and pinky fingers before but on this tube it all sounds like flat picking. I remember watching him play this live on tiny desk def with a pick
He employs a technique called 'hybrid picking' occasionally; in the middle section of 'Destination' between the first chorus and second verse, for example.
Right?!
Lyrics:
It's time to bid this whole world goodbye.
Oh, glory, time to fly away.
We'll meet our savior in the sky.
Hallelujah, the 21st of May.
Sinner, heed these words of mine
'Bout the coming Judgment Day.
Yes, the end is drawing nigh.
Hallelujah, the 21st of May.
They laughed while Noah built his boat,
Then cried when came the rain.
They mock me now, but I will float
On the 21st of May.
Well, I've never been so sure
And I've never led no one astray.
'Cept in the fall of '94.
But Hallelujah, the 21st of May.
They laughed while Noah built his boat,
Then cried when came the rain.
They mock me now, but I will float
On the 21st of May.
They mock me now, but I will float
On the 21st of May.
Hallelujah, the 21st of May.
Backstory, from the e-mail they sent today:
Sean wrote this song on May 20th, 2011, the day before the supposed rapture as predicted and advertised by Bay Area pastor Harold Camping (whose point of view he sings it from). It was a close call but we made it.
Well, I'm sure glad Sean Watkins and the rest of Nickel Creek made it past the 21st of May! Glory be! Y'all are still around!
Found this song while looking up an event on the 21st of may, a good tune
They are really underrated.
Don't mind me... just coming back again for my yearly listen.
See you again next month! 👋
I love that this is poking fun at Harold Camping
How is it poking fun at Harold Camping?
Harold Camping believed the world would end on the 21st of May?
and on several days in the fall of 1994
@@anonymousdratini Dont worry...Harold will have the last laugh this May 21st ..!! :)
@@jz295491 Amen.🙏🔥🙌
My favorite band is back. Thank God! I've gone through so many of their albums playing them too much.

This song hits way different during quarantine.....but hey its the 21st of May & I'm still here =] if you are reading this be safe be well
Happy 21st of May.
It’s sad this band isn’t talked about more. Some of the most talented musicians out there
It's even sadder that people can actually hate bluegrass. But hey, I guess people are allowed to have opinions.
@@TheSignatureK how anyone can hate bluegrass is beyond me. To each their own
Amazing song, extremely talented musicians! Bravo.
funny thing is that i listen to this on a 20th of may, and it's the first time. ever
Love it! Can't wait to see you guys in Seattle a few days before the 21st of May 😉
LOVE IT!!!
It may not have been the day for all, but it certainly was for one - a precious & gracious woman of faith. The power of words is for the listener to discern within their circumstance. That is the beauty of well written songs. Musically, it is a pleasure to listen to as well.
The new offering is incredible!
I had have listened to this song about ten times. It just dawned on me what they were singing about. Love it! (now that I get it.)
Why do you like it (now that you get it)? why does there always have to be some underlying message in music, why can't you just listen and enjoy?
Jordan did it not dawn on you that they listened ten times? You don't exactly listen to a song that many times that you don't enjoy. I enjoy the song and I love the meaning.
The song makes fun of a preacher who predicted the second coming and, obviously, failed.
+Jordan Horan ur dumb the message is clear and Sean ( who sings it and wrote it) even states what its about u lardhead!
Good to hear today
Here we go again!
All praise Harold!
Finally, my dream came true. A song on my birth date! And this is pretty amazing. :)
Received the CD as a Christmas gift...LOVE this song, but was mystified as to the significance of the date--until now. Marvelous :)
Happy May 21st
I was confused about how heavy handed this song sounded, then did a little digging into the line about "Except in the Fall of 94", and found this guy who I had completely forgotten about!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Camping
Gives a little more context to the song.
True song almost 1 year ago I lost a true great pet friend hero I will miss her she lived to be 21 american shorthair cat :')
My 16 year old son was killed on May 21st,2006.
So sorry. Yet your a great pet owner. Don't forget that
Thank you Dorothy Catalano.
A day late to my annual listening, but could almost swear the rapture was going to happen yesterday 😅
I send this to my former brother-in-law almost every year for his birthday.
We got married on this day in 2011!! And then the religious people rescheduled the ending of the world to my birthday Oct 21 of the same year! 😂
21st of may is my birthday!
Me too!
It was also my grandmother's and it's my niece's. My daughters were also due that day, but came a month earlier. :-D May 21st is a great day to our family.
Me too!!
Lol me 2
My birthday!!!
Today is the first time I've ever heard this tune (Its the 20th of May)
Here we are on the 21st of May
You don't have to wait until May 21st to float.
We all float down here.
21st Of May 2020, where else would I be?
Please add another show in Seattle! I'm sure another would sell out. It sold out in 3 hours and by the time I got on to get tickets it was too late.
tickets still available in Missoula :)
My son’s birthday ♥️
TODAY?????? OH CRAP, I'M NOT READY!!!
It's official!
#The21stOfMay

Ironically enough this day is the same date as my wife's birthday. We weren't planning on the world ending that day though.

we love you Poland loves you( at least country lovers:)
its now 27th of may, 2017... im a bit late haha
👍
Today (in Australia)
This song is a brilliant parody of fundamentalist/American "Christianity"--the sort that is obsessed with "End Times" predictions. And the folk music is just the perfect accompaniment to this theme. I say this as a Christian.
ObjectiveBob c
Could be he was just early, it’s too good of a song. It sounds like it’s spiritually written, Could mean after Noah closed the ark on the 14-15 of May
Continued after the 71st year in 2019, God waited 7 days before it rained. It could apply this year. May 21, 2019. We only hope, God Bless us all!
There's a line in the song that says "I've never led no one astray. Except in the fall of 94". What do you think he is referencing?
Actually you're wrong. This song is making fun of Harold Camping who told everyone the Rapture was going to happen in September of 1994. They don't poke fun of religions, just idiots who make assumptions about things that they don't know anything about.
my birthday is special
RIP Harold Camping
21st of May but it was release in June 18
Well, what happened to the preacher that predicted this- 21 of May thing?
The day he got saved?
That guitar playing 0.0
No person knows the day or the hour, but this could be irony at work.
This song feels oddly relevant on March 4, 2021. I wonder why...?
There are many like me whose bday is also 21st of may who search in youtube.hehe
May 21st 2015 ?
+David Talbot
The rapture according to a certain preacher was to have happen on May 21, 2011. I believed he changed ( after it didn't happen) to Oct. 2011. He later passed away
william miller? i believe thats who i believe your talking about.....his birthplace/church are a mile down the road where i grew up in washington county ny
Happy 21st of May, I guess it never happened! *****
+Colton Blumhagen if u watch their tiny desk concert, you will understand what the song was written about
Wait that's my birthday 🎂 i was born in may 21
Didn’t realize until just now that this is making fun of Harold Camping... thanks to Internet Historian lol
I listen to this song every 21 of May, then my husband scolds me for making fun of poor old Pastor Camping.
Poor old Harold Camping who had to deal with the crushing ramifications of being wrong. Again. Meanwhile, his followers were left destitute, some were in prison for trying to kill their own children before the end came, and some families were grieving because terrified loved ones had committed suicide.
I think this is such a great song, even though I'm an athiest haha
It's sardonic afaik
sounds like something tony rice would sing
I enjoy this song but sort of contradicting since god says no man shall know the day hour or minute the savior will come back.
The song is poking fun at a man who claimed to know. Nothing contradicting here. (P.S. Happy 21st of May!)
It's my birthday :(
I mean, we laughed at him, but look at everything that happened these past eight years and tell me anything is real anymore.
(also, posting to get in on the doomsday birthday club)
[Glances at the calendar] Hmm. Well, this is embarrassing.
Yeah you got left behind like me and everyone. We're all sinners.
DottyIce But nothing happened on October 21 2011, either. That was supposed to be the *real* end of the world.
Happy 21st of May.
