- Опубліковано 23 лис 2024
- So does hair grease really grow hair? Does grease clog your scalp with its mineral oil and petroleum that's bad for hair ? Is hair grease better for natural hair or relaxed hair? Does grease really moisturize your hair. We recently got back to basics with blue magic hair grease on our relaxed hair, but we really want to see what is it about grease or any secrets that's in grease that make it maybe too good to be true.

All these negatives about grease were put out by those big corporations when they realized that our hair is EXTREMELY PROFITABLE!!! Grease was fine for the bulk of us growing up as our mothers and grandmothers did not spend hours and hours on different “methods”. They kept it simple and consistent: wash it, condition it, grease that scalp, braid it! Tfs!🤗
Real Eyes Realize Real Lies Except corporations bought up Black hair brands a while ago and when Black Women first moved away from grease it was diy products that were popular.
I swear the lie about grease clogging your pores and causing product buildup and all that nonsense came from someone that just didn't wash their hair as often as they should. I went back to grease a month ago and while I have yet to notice length retention, I have noticed SHRINKAGE, thickness, literally little to no shedding on wash day or any other time I have to detangle. My hair is holding moisture and my scalp is squeaky clean. Wash once a week, wet in shower twice a week and re-sealed with grease. Haven't seen my hair this happy since I was a child.
Sugar Face Doll I agree.. Grease and co-washing do not go together and that is probably why it was given such a bad reputation because every natural if not most started opting to cowash more than they shampooed. Just started using grease as a sealant and it has eliminated the need for me to remoisturize my hair every night to once a week after my wash day which means less manipulation for me.
@@PurpleDiamondQueen girl yes 🙌🏽🙌🏽 I'm telling you, they just not using it right. My hair sops up any and everything you put on it. Gone! By the end of the day! Grease as a sealant also eliminates the need for me to remoisturize constantly, so yes I get it, less manipulation. So now instead of everyday, I will remoisturize once or twice a week.
Sugar Face Doll should i USE it after deep conditioning? And is the blue or the green better
@@babyfacesavagesub7008 yes after you deep condition. Add a leave in moisturizer and seal with grease of your choice. So far as which grease is up to you. My hair likes the heavy stuff so I use kuza indian hemp. That could weigh down someone else's hair tho.
Same here. Since I've started using grease, my scalp is not dry anymore and I don't have as much damage. I don't think a lot of the new natural products protect from the sun that well.
I think its time to get back to my roots and pick up some blue magic
Right? It was fine back then, so why not 🤷🏾♀️
Peace love and hair grease for real..
@@jaelove3121 Yesss!!
I stopped using grease following naturalistas saying how it 'clogs pores.' I'm finally past chest length and I noticed since then, I experience reallllly dry scalp. Dandruff patches and everything. I used all the oils that usually worked in the past; coconut oil, olive, Vitamin E, vegetable glycerin, shea butter, but they only provide me with temporary relief.
I talked to my hair dresser who washes my hair and cornrows my natural hair (when I don't feel like doing it myself) and he recommended I go back to grease. I used Bergamot as a kid and I loved the Indian Hemp one so I went back to that.
It's only been a week but my dry scalp is gone and it doesn't itch. My hair is also maintaining moisture much better without extra effort. So yep, the LOC method is cool, but adding some grease in the routine has def improved my hair & scalp health. Back to the basics lol.
WOW. You’re comment is literally SPOT on to what I feel. I also stopped using grease as a natural - exact same thing you said - and I also have a dry scalp and tried the oils, coco and shea butter. I JUST bought Indian hemp so I’m excited to try it.
How is it going now? Do you have better length retention?
When I think about it my hair used to be long. I used to put blue magic, vo5 hot oil, and sulfur 8. So I say yes to the grease!
Giiirrrrlll you got my childhood on lock. That was my exact routine. All my fave products plus pink moisturizer lol
I don't know why I listened to the hate on hair grease. My mom used that on my hair as a child and my hair flourished! It was long and thick!
Thanks TwoLaLa for clearing this up! Grease has been getting a bad rap for a while now. My mom used grease on her hair and my hair when I was a child and we still use grease til this day. Grease doesn't clog pores unless there's already buildup on the scalp. It doesn't stop hair growth. My mom's hair is halfway down her back. If used properly, using clarifying/sulfate shampoo you won't have a problem with your hair.
THANK YOU!!! 👏🏾 I watch alot of grease videos on here and I saw so many comments about that..lol
I just read in the primary science literature (Journal of Dermatology) states that petroleum, lanolin and lecithin prevent water loss, and lock the moisture into the hair shaft. Petroleum reduce water loss by 98%, which 170 times better than olive oil. Yeah, it shocked me too when I read this, but if you think back when we were younger, it worked and grew our hair.
DeliciaTrini thanks for those facts! There’s a reason it works!
The problem with black natural hair, we got away from what worked from generation to generation. Hair grease kept our hair well conditions. It's when they made our roots and haircare a business. Since I went back to what my granny, grandmother and mother used on our hair, my hair is back to it's well condition state. Stop asking is grease good for our hair, the question you need ask, why they say it isn't good for our hair. I use royal crown, hair good or blue magic.., also hair grease is good for your hair and scalp.
Ann Prince I don’t understand this belief that Black Women just up and ditched a method that had been working with no problems. Many Black Women had (or believed they had) problems with grease. This was also at a time when the Natural Hair Movement was forming and the importance of moisture was being hammered hard. Moreover there were plenty of Black Women showing off impressive results using the loc method with shea butter and natural oils, which for some was going back to the roots of Black hair products. Definitely there was misinformation being touted about grease but it wasn’t alone there eg the “porosity test”.
When I was a kid and a teen grease was all that was used, and Hair food grease.
Yess!! I remember seeing hair food! That was the one I couldn't remember the name but knew it was everybody's favorite :)
True but when we were little girls, our hair was usually in either braids or twists so it didn't matter if the pomade made it stiff! lol
That yellow hair food in the little jar? That was my favorite in high school! That and hair mayo! 😂😂😂😂
I'm still growing my hair out using the gold medal products and blue magic. My hair is thicker than it was a year ago and growing like crazy.
I started to ignore the natural hair community rules and starting doing what is best for my hair. I avoided grease because of all the bad rap abut it. Oils did not work for my hair, it would be extremely dry, it would always break and the split ends in my hair was crazy. Now im just going to use whatever works for my hair. My hair loves grease and the health of my hair has improved
Same for my hair 😔 love grease
Yep a lot of the natural oils if not used in moderation can dry out your hair
I also use both grease and oils in my hair. I know when I was using Sulfur 8 my hair grew pretty long. I made the mistake of going to a hairdresser who basically didn't know how to do long hair so I'm here today doing my own hair again nurturing it back to good health. 😊
Yep! Nothin wrong with having grease and oil in your routine. Y'all are so serious about the sulfur 8, I almost want to try it, but I can't with the smell..lol
which one do you use first, oil?
I went back to basics during the pandemic and my scalp is so happy. No dandruff, itching, or anything just full of volume and growing like a weed.
What grease are u using plz
Grease is what I used a lot growing up and I still use it. I agree that grease CAN cause hair to shed as you two said, the people that say grease is bad and blah, blah, blah they just don’t know how to use it properly yet. That’s why they complain about it. Very good video you two 🥰🥰🥰😘
Exactly!! It's all in how you use it. Thanks girl!
There is not evidence that it stops hair growth. If that was true then who would want to shave their legs when theres vaseline to stop it from growing and add a glossy finish?
Lol true
The thing about hair grease is that a little does go a long way. On freshly washed, conditioned and styled i.e. blow-dried and flat-ironed hair, for example, part hair two ways - front to back, and ear to ear. Apply grease down the parts. Massage. Comb through. That should be enough until the next weekly wash day. On natural, pressed i.e. hot combed hair, hair grease actually keeps the hair from reverting.
I'm a silk press natural. How often should I use grease on straightened hair?
@@Monicaizpeace I am not familiar with the silk press process, so I can't actually comment on your question.
This is brilliant. My roots are always the first to revert and it's annoying. I like your technique. I think I'll expand and grease each quadrant 3 ways laterally and 3 ways vertically. I have too much hair to just grease the cross part.
Great video ladies. I always loved (and still do) Ultra Sheen...weirdly I’ll just sniff the scent because it brings back memories. Right now I use Softee hair grease because that’s the jar that’s open. I was so happy to find a lot of this brand at Dollar Tree. Its best to have some type of liquid moisture on your hair BEFORE adding the grease. The grease just locks in that liquid moisture you have. I do not put grease on dry hair...that’s a big no no for my low porosity hair.
Dollar Tree sells hair grease?! Those are good brands. I agree with the part about grease locking in the moisture.
I just bought some yesterday!!
@@lisadavis5741 Now I need to go look. What states are y'all in?
Thanks for clearing up the myths on grease. For a long time, I was believing that it clogs your pores, but it makes since that's only the case if your scalp is already dirty. I'm gonna pull mine back out and dust it off..lol
Hey ladies. Great content! I went back to my Dax and blue magic. So glad I did! I even thought about TCB which I used in the 90's. Miss that one! Stay safe!!
TCB! I remember that brand too!! Haha You be safe as well!
Use as needed , a cosmetologist on here recommend 2-3 times a week. I think he said try to get it down to 2x a week. Everyone is different though 😊
Hairstylists back in the day would relax our hair and before styling, they'd grease our scalp. Now natural hairstylists say it's bad. But our hair was healthy back then because we took care of it. Wasn't a lot of styles that caused baldness and alopecia. I went back to hair grease and I use the Blue Magic Indian Hemp one on my scalp and hair and the Bergamot one on my daughter's hair. No issues over here and my hair is super soft.
I grew up getting my scalp & scratched with a comb, then greased. My hair was probably healthier than ever. My mom nvr used Blue Magic thi- I know that for sure. I currently use Bronner Brothers Super Grow grease. 👍🏾
The fact is the masses are taught to use grease wrongly. Also, people need to wash their hair with shampoo! The myths of dirt growing hair, and grease being a moisturizer. Thank you ladies for the great information. I mostly use grease and water. I use S curl activator along with it.
Thanks ladies! Great info! I learned something new about hair shedding. I always wondered why my hair would shed more after a week of moisturizing and sealing. Now it all makes sense!! My hair is weighed down. I may need a mid-week wash day or decrease the amount of product I use. Thanks for the insight!
I didn’t experience hair issues until I stopped using grease and starting using oil. I grew up with my mom using grease on my hair and scalp and I had almost waist length hair that was thick! I then started seeing that oil was better and have had breakage and issues since switching. I’ve gone back to grease and already seeing a difference
Tea tree oil works but it don't last long.
Now I use African Pride Magical Grow.
This Herbal grease works as I apply it 1once a day and 1once at night + keeping it covered because too much exposure to cold/heat will dry up the moisture.
40 k. Congratulations ladies! Well deserved !😊.
Thank you so much for your constant support!
TwoLaLa you’re welcome! I love your channel! 😊
I prefer products that soak in and don't leave a residue on my hands when I touch my hair so I haven't used greasy in years. I've always bought products though that have petroleum or mineral oil as an ingredient. One of my favorite conditioners the silicon mix has mineral oil in it and I love it. Great video!!
Thanks girl! Yea mineral oil and petroleum is something to not as bad as people say it is.
I know the pink oil moisturer lotion does not smell the same it seem like they done something different from the 80s & the queen cholesterol conditioner still smell and works the same, my hair feels like butter!!
Yesssss your right.
This was a nice video on the facts and fictions about grease. So many of us used this back in the day.💜💜
That's what it all comes down to. Sometimes we need to get back to what works and not what's current
My mom used Bergamont, hairfood and ultra sheen products in my hair growing up. I used Blue Magic in my daughter's hair because I couldn't find the original Bergamont anymore it smelled so good.
R Mobley check your dollar store. My Bestfriend uses it in his hair still to this day.
@@kendraharer5753 I've seen hairfood by softee there but not the bergamont. I'll just have to check the store's further out.
R Mobley I’m in Texas and I can easily find it. Have you checked eBay maybe if not amazon? I’m sure someone has gotten clever and are making a profit on the fact that it’s just a $1. Best of luck.
@@kendraharer5753 I'm sure I'll be able to find it at other dollar store's around Western, Ny
Yes I remember Blue Magic and have bought it in recent years. I believe it is the exact same.
I saw Blue magic in my drugstore but opted for do gro instead.
I need to go back to using hair grease. Hair oil is just too messy. It so disrespectful how it drips everywhere.
I only grease my scalp and hair after washing . Never between washes so I tend to wash my hair at least once a week 😅…. Patiently awaiting the hair growth but hair has stopped shedding as much
I have dreadlocks. I was natural for most of my childhood and then went to perms toward middle school. and Transitioned back to loose natural hair in 10th grade and then I locked my hair 3 years ago. I’ve had issues with psoriasis and dandruff and the ONLY thing that has saved my hair and scalp is blue magic. I’ve tried the oils and sprays, shampoos and conditioners and blue magic is always what I end up falling back on. I believe my scalp is sensitive and I don’t use it throughout my actual dreads ONLY my scalp. It will cause buildup if you try to us it on the actual locks 🤣
Much love to all of you on whichever hair journey you’re on✨💜
Congratulations on hitting 40k you guys are one of my fav channels you deserve this!! So proud of you. Yasss I used grease in my daughter's hair for years and actually it makes hair grow.
Hey girl! Thank you so much! Y'all helped us to 40k and we are sooooo grateful for you!!
I have been using Blue Magic for years. Its great for putting moisturizer on my hair and great when I grease my hair to the scalp and put it on my hair.
THIS IS THE ONLY GREASE I USE WHEN I HOT COMB AND STRAIGHTEN MY HAIR. I don't need to put grease on it until my next wash/ and condition day.
I use grease all the time ! Does my hair good
Shampoo and grease alone are working beautiful for me, but I've thought about adding aloe vera juice before the grease.
I been using grease and oil for my curls I tell you this helps me more then the natural curling cream
it smells really good and i wants to know will this make my hair grow it feels good on my scalp i want to see what happens when i continue to use this i want my hair thicker and longer
Have been using blue magic for two months now. My hair is so soft...problem is after applying.. It itches alot on first day.. I use castor one.. Help
I checked the ingredients for that one. It contains coconut oil and some herbs which might be irritating the scalp.
Or
... Do you suffer from dry scalp? If you do not have dry scalp, then your scalp is most likely producing enough sebum so you won't need to add any other product to it.
You might need to detox your scalp. You can used 1 part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water mixed together, wash your hair with it and rinse with cool water. Next, condition your hair with a moisturizing conditioner, rinse well. Then use a liquid leave in conditioner, then lightly coat each section of hair with blue magic hair grease. Note, whenever your scalp is itching that soon after shampooing it, that is a good sign that your scalp has too much build up on it. Try shampooing you hair every 3 days with head and shoulders shampoo. This should take care of the itchy scalp.
Grease is a moisturizer and especially for natural hair.water and grease is amazing.
That’s not true at all, it’s a sealant
@@anniejoseph1242 To me it does both...it would mysteries when you apply water
I use grease and I have 2c-3a natural hair. High porosity. It seals the moisture info me. It’s a little heavy for me so I may experiment.
I use all the local oils we have here in Hawaii. Oiling my scalp is key for my fragile , dry and wavy hair
Great information ladies
💕love your videos
Aloha
Christy Smith Aloha!!! Thanks for sharing! I use grease to seal in moisture on my braids today. You’re right, it’s a great sealant.
You ladies look so pretty and that hair looks good.
Aww thanks so much!! It needs to get washed AGAIN..at some point..lol
I'm natural and I miss being relaxed. It's easier to take care of your hair when u have a perm.
Yes true
The other point that should be discussed is that oil is absorbed IN the scalp whereas a pomade tends to just sit on the surface of the skin.
It stays on the surface longer but does eventually absorb. That's why it's best to not over do it because you're right, it stays on longer.
i love love love grease! your hair is looking so good!
Hey! Thanks so much..it needs a wash soon though. I'm dreading it :/ lol
Hair grease is a moisturizer. It keeps your scalp and hair from dryness if you are using the right kind of scalp and hair grease. Have you ever noticed when you put too much of hair grease on your hair; it started to feel wet and weighted down. Because it is a moisturizer, but can be use as a sealant to seal in other moisture. Your scalp and hair will determine the best way to use scalp and hair grease, so listen to your scalp and hair. They are trying to tell you something!😊
girl there like 20 blue magic greases now 😅
Some are moisturizers
I am a little late to this video however the content is very relative today. Retaining hair length is not about products. It is about your method. My daughter and I both have 4c hair. Mine was down to my waist until I lost it due to stress after my mom was diagnosed and passed away from cancer. It is now back to bra strap length after I cut it to my collar bone. My little one is 5 yrs with a full head of hair almost to her bum. I used the very same products that worked fir mine. I never found what I would consider the perfect product for her hair until now, cream of nature repair leave-in repair conditioner and blue magic Indian Hemp grease. Her hair has never felt softer. Couple that with a cleansing shampoo and Aussie Moist 3 minute deeeep conditioner and her hair is gold. I shampoo it every 2 week and keep our hair in natural braids. Simple and effective.
Congratulations for this video! You know I have been using grease in my hair for a year now it will be two years coming up and the one I use if the original the one with the green tea leaves in it and I also use the other one that says Argan Oil it's a leave-in conditioner they both work well there my hair they are not allowing my hair to come out or clog my pores I am relaxed has been relaxed since 2003 and I love it I really do it's not a moisturizer but it does add Sheen and softness to the hair :-) thank you guys so much God bless you💕🙏👍👌
Nice! Long time relaxed hair like us! The sheen and softness is amazing, but it's not moisturized.
I am trying to strengthen my relaxed hair and soothe my scalp. So I am going back to grease.
Beautiful twins 😍 thank you for sharing this video
I bought some blue magic Indian hemp a week ago
I love grease it’s working for me! ✨
Yes!!! Glad it’s back in my routine as well.
hi what benefits have you noticed?
The problem with grease on the scalp is that the hair will not sway and move. It seems grease is heavy and weighs down the hair and that oil is a lot better than a pomade.
I just apply it a little bit .. My hair dresser since 5 told me to stop using grease i went back to grease a yr ago my hair touch my chest almost! 💁
That's why we wouldn't use it when we first get our hair done to keep it swangin! In fact, we don't use product in our hair for the first couple weeks of getting it washed and flat ironed at the salon. I'd get it in close to wash day..lol
Unless someone really wants their hair to move a lot, then it wouldn't be a problem, especially if you use less grease or a lighter formula like Ultra Sheen or African Pride grease. It's not like your hair would be super stiff and not move at all but grease will have more of a "hold" throughout the hair, which is fine.
How often should you use for hair growth?
IMG, I could tell who's who now😆😆 hi Ebony hi Eriva, I believe grease is good for the scalp to,thank you for clearing that up, Blue Magic never left they just added more to the line. great video as always love you girls. Tell Juan I said wassssuuuup😆😆

Can I just say something.... U guys, please don't attack me lol. I'm also not trying to say anything negative or attack anyone myself. Ok so, I'm a cosmetology student and I've been doing my research for many years now (not that that'll make my point any more valid) & I am natural but from what I've read (reliable sources but I could be wrong), no, grease doesn't stop hair from growing (nothing does unless u have some underlying condition or permanent scalp damage) but more so slows it down and stunts the hair growth when put on the hair & scalp, because grease is such a excellent sealant, (maybe the best) it locks moisture (water) in but traps moisture out (not all of it). So once the moisture beneath the grease evaporates it's no longer moisturized but is still pliable and lubricated because of the grease on top. Also, when it comes to the clogging of the scalp I agree that the dirt and sweat are what clog the scalp because it's locked in beneath the grease which I've read is what can stunt (slow down) the hair growth. As far as damage, nah I've never heard anything of it damaging hair lol. As a natural I just thought I'd clarify why I choose not to use grease.
Could you provide the source that makes the claim that grease stunts growth? Not sure how that makes any sense because the hair follicles are not trapped and the hair will still grow from scalp. Grease will eventually evaporate after a while when put on the skin or scalp, especially if someone has dry scalp.
@@Penelope416 I have the sources saved in my phone. I'm not saying it stops hair growth, I just think it has to be used a certain way to retain length.

@@lareshondatreadway3999 I never said that you said that it stops hair growth. You posted 3 hair blog posts that all said the same thing (clogs hair pores) and even they did not explain from a scientific basis, why exactly that would be the case. I asked you to back up your claims with scientific data lady, not pseudoscientific blog posts.
The molecules in petroletum or petroleum jelly are too large to reach below the skin to clog pores, so they just sit on top of the skin.
Do whatever works for you. Grease is not my preference.
@@lareshondatreadway3999 None of these articles you posted support your claim that grease will stunt hair growth.
Now how do yall wash it out and how often and with what? 🤣 sorry for the three in one question.
With regular shampoo. You can sue clarifying but don't use clarifying all the time. I don't pack grease on my head either, but you can also dry brush your scalp before washing to lift up buildup. I do it to help with hair growth :)

Petroleum?

@@twolala1 YES 👍💯🙏😇
But grease actually clog your pores, for example when you relaxe your hair you put grease on your scalp that way relaxer will not infiltrate in your follicules, it's not because you can wash it out that it doesn't clog your pores. If it's a great sealant for your hair i don't see why it wouldn't be a sealant for your scalp.
There's petroleum in it which is non comedogenic meaning it's not gonna clog your pores. I think it's a myth, but of you feel that it clogs yours, there are other alternatives.
Our parents used grease and their parents used grease. We all had hair on our heads.
