Your friend properly points out at the time of that mv they were up and coming and the production value is low but that’s 7 years ago. It’s still a great song and their breakout song but they’ve evolved so much. I was going to say you guys should both react to one of their newer mv “Warning” (I don’t think you did that yet). But Gary earlier recommends Blooming and that one is just as good!
You were reacting to one of the most popular bands on the internet. Band-Maid was formed by Miku, the supporting vocal and rhythm guitarist. Miku was originally in a J-pop girl group, after the group failed and disbanded she worked in a Maid cafe in Tokyo. It was at that time she thought a rock group playing in maid outfits would look very cute and cool. She found Kanami (lead guitarist) from UA-cam, Kanami introduced her friend Akane (drummer) who at that time took work as a section musician. Akane then get her classmate Misa (bassist) to the band. No one had a real rock band experience when this band was formed in 2013. Now in 2021 they have grown into the best hard rock band on the planet.
The breakout vid that went viral and helped keep the band together. This is as good a place to start as any. As for the maid outfits? That was Miku's idea. She is the second vocalists, pretending to play that Rickenbacker guitar. Miku was working at a maid cafe when she came up with the idea to start a hard rock band with all the members dressed as cute maids to create a "gap". That disparity between what you see & what you hear. If you watch any of the vids from the links I post below you'll see how the uniforms have evolved over time . Try the song *Domination* live next. This was their first MV, so you are seeing the Maids in their infancy. They've come a long was in seven years. Check out their live performances of Domination, Onset, Play, or Puzzle; or the MVs for Dice, Blooming, Manners, or Warning. Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista). Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme. Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit. Miku started heading into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory. Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free. Saiki took a head housekeeper 's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid. And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. '
Miku "guitar/backing vocal" worked in a traditional Japanese Maid Cafe when she decided to start a band.. so she did... the French maid uniforms setup what they call "the Gap".. I've always found this one to be a fun song, but it's nowhere near the top of most BAND-MAID fans lists. Try 'Moratorium', 'Dice' and 'Secret My Lips'. All three are a good mix for drums, bass and guitar. Best guitar solo might be in 'Daydreaming' though. BTW, they are: Miku Kobato (小鳩 ミク) - band founder, main lyricist, rhythm guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals and spokespigeon. Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波) - lead guitar, backing vocals, main music composer. Akane Hirose (廣瀬 茜) - drums, occasional backing vocals, sequencing. Half human and half gorilla. Misa (ミサ, stylized as MISA) - bass, occasional assassinations. Saiki Atsumi (厚見 彩姫) - main lead and occasional backing vocals.
This is an early song of theirs. I wouldn't introduce anybody to Band-Maid with this song. Their sound is different now, and they didn't write this song, whereas they wrote every song on their most recent album. And the skills they show on their most recent album are also far beyond what we see here. So, as your friend is a rapper, I'd show him the "Blooming" music video, as reactors frequently ask if Saiki is rapping on it (she sings so fast on it). If not that one, then the music video "Warning!" from their latest album is a wild and enjoyable ride.
