It's the thickness of the shells. To sit behind a set of drums with a shell that thick is incredible. Thin maple has a beautiful open, warm sound. But, when you have a shell half inch thick it's the difference between flicking a piece of saran-wrap with your pinky, and hitting concrete with a sledgehammer. I've got a set of Eames Mastertone's that have a 12ply shell, and it's absolutely spectacular....just in a different way. The only problem with the thicker shells is that you need a deeper shell to counter the pitch of the drum going up due to the shell thickness. Short of that, I'll pick the thicker shell any day of the week. Especially with recording.
Agreed, just wish I could afford a Sonor kit. They’re actually my favorite drum manufacturers of all time. Their kits just sound so good, and even though they are almost the same price as DW kits, they’re much better sounding, imo. I don’t know what it is about DW kits, but I’ve just never liked, the only DW drum I would by is a snare drum. But, TAMA kits are incredible, too. There are so many great drum makers out there that it’s hard to choose a favorite. But, DCP did on a good, by showing how each kit sounds.
sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Zayn Wilson I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have a maple DW Custom kit (with reinforcement rings) and though I absolutely LOVE them for their ability to produce a beautiful, pure note and their resonance... those SONORs were just incredible sounding. Whether it be the beech shells or the slightly smaller shell construction... they just sounded amazing.
I've been playing for 48 years and all I can say is that I've had just about every brand under the sun and Sonor has the best engineering. You won't find a flaw in anything they make. I love my 1985 Horst LInk Signature kit (bubinga). And talk about customizable! They've been doing that for quite a long time. Mine is a 20 x 16, 15 x 15, 12 x 12, and a 14 x 6 1/2" configuration (they were a basket case when I got them, but it only took some elbow grease and new heads to get them sounding, and looking, great). The hardware on Sonor drums may look a bit odd, but it's bullet proof and the woods that they use are only the best! Having said that, I did really like the sound of all of the kits. I think the Sonor had the most distinctive sound, but, as you said, that may be because of their slightly undersized shells with the "floating" heads. The DW actually sounded the "roundest" to me and the Tama had a lot of attack. The Sonor, though, did have a fuller tone and seemed to work better at both the low and high tuning ranges. Great video! I would also love to see comparisons between high end Gretsch, Ludwig, Yamaha, and Pearl. They may not be in the same "boutique" range as the DW, Tama, and Sonor kits from this video, but they all make some incredible "high end" kits that are worth checking out. Also, here's an idea for a future video...compare vintage kits of about the same year. Maybe late 60's? Whatever you might have...Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch and maybe even (if you have these) Premier and Sonor? It would be cool to see how they were all made back then and hear the differences. Cheers!
Wow, i don't think I'd kick any of those kit's out of bed but the DW has my vote overall! Sounds the best to my ear by just that little bit that, well is huge when tuning for different rooms and applications.
my god that Sonor just made my heart stop..... soooooo gorgeous and that low tuning just made me want to sell all of my kits and splurge on one of these!
Whoa! That Sonor kit was so big and so different than the others! I mean...Im a little late to the party, but thats the beauty of the internet...perpetuity of content! I had a Sonor Force 3005 that I sold in 2014...ah regrets.
It‘s not even a question of better or worse as they all sound amazing, but nothing sounds like the Sonor. I‘ve noticed that they even put their logo on the rubber (!) that protects the shell from the metal, now that‘s insane. Great video guys.
The three kits are stunning to say The least.! Absolutely beautiful. If you took the visual out,Sonar wins with the sound.Thats phenomenal. They just have that sound that so many of us have chased. Remarkable product.
All 3 kits are really nice, but the sound of the Sonor SQ2 is Great! I have a Sonor Force 3005 maple set, which is fun to play and has nice hardware. I can imagine that the beech shells are simply amazing.
I wish my guitar sounded so tight like those toms on the Sonor. They are class apart for sure. And I think I love the higher tunings on drums. Another great video, thank you DCP.
Another great video by dcp. You guys make choosing drums over UA-cam so easy. Highly appreciate the efforts you guys take to tune all the sets similarly so that customers can choose as per their choice. Thanks a lot 🙏 Can you guys make videos on double bass pedals under 300$ please?
Oh Sonor.... the stuff of dreams. I’m a Yammy guy. I’d get a PHX kit but just might pick an SQ2 over it. Not only do those Beech kits sound legendary, The finish and craftsmanship of Sonor is impeccable. One day......🤤
That SQ2 kit since the first time I laid eyes on it I was in LOVE. My first serious kit was a Sonor force 2007 Birch kit and I loved it. It had me sold on Sonor. The hardware is amazing on even their entry level kits.. but the SQ2 omg FUGGHEDABOUDIT one day I pray I can afford one!!!
Really Nice drums all 3. In my world Tama, Sonor, DW.... Tama is the best sounding and the finish is great. These Sonor and DW are more flashy but Tama for the win 😎👍
Sonor for the Win! I'm a maple/ DW dude but if I were going to spend the 💸... Sonor!!!! Sound alone is an eargasm... but the look in every detail... just sexy!
Another stellar video by Shane and his crew. Sonor SQ2's are my favorite and always will be from top to bottom. I own a few DW collector series maple exotic and they are stellar too. Thank you for the great video.
Normally I would say without even listening DW....but for me the winner is handsdown the sonor, fatt snare sound, clear but still full toms and a beautiful kick.
Holy crap i don't know why more companies don't do a matching inner shell ply thats beautiful. I'm a long time DW guy but that Sonor blew me away. If I ever win the lottery or make it big I'm totally ordering a set from you guys. Different sizes though.
I’d take the Tama anyday even though the mahogany isnt even my favorite out of the star line. Tama Star walnut and Tama starclassic bubinga are the best sounding drums in the world to my ears. The mahogany is super nice too but doesn’t have the punch and aggression that the star walnuts have without the sound focus rings but I still prefer the tamas over the dw or sonor.
I reached out to Tama directly on three occasions when inquiring about building my dream kit. They never got back to me. So I went with Pearl. I've played Pearl for 31 years, I love the quality, durability, and craftsmanship, and I only have an Export! lol. I just bought a 13 Piece Pearl Reference. Sorry Tama, if you replied to me you may have gotten that order!
Sonor all the way - just a perfect allround sound! I still own a Sonor Lite drumset built in 1984 and it is still one of the best sounding drumsets I ever heard! German Quality! However, Yamaha makes awesome sounding drumsets as well - still an underrated brand!! I had a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute and is was top notch! perfect sound as well!
Sonor drums are already pre-mixed;) perfect balance. You get what you pay for people. I know cause I've been playing sonor beech shells for years and they just keep sounding better with age.
The Tama and Sonor sounded great. I liked the wood finish on the Sonor but I kinda liked the Tama sound better. It's a toss up. Flip a coin. I've had Sonor Phonic all the way up to the newer Sonor and I can say, in my opinion, I hate that Sonor tom mount. But, like you said, you can order it without that big hunk of metal on your bass drum. Lately, I've been into mounting my first tom on a snare stand. I always hated the idea of that until I tried it, now it's pretty nice. Great video!
I agree that they all sound good. It would’ve been nice to have a head-to-head comparison, as it’s hard to remember what each one sounds like. I realize this would’ve extended the length of the video. Some observations, on the DW kit, I didn’t like how the seams came together on the floor Tom from the back looks strange to me. I found the finish on the Tama kit rather boring, and on the Sonor kit, the mounting system like Shane says, you like it or hate it. Didn’t turn me on. But hey if I had the coin Id be thrilled to own any of these. I love how DCP invests the time to get the maximum sound and performance out of the drums they feature. Great job guys!
"head to head comparison" they all also have different heads on, i like to hear they all with the same heads and you will always get a mismatched line up if you run the grain around the drum, i much prefer it running top to bottom
Surprise Surprise they all sounded awesome. Dream kits for sure but right now I'm dreaming of those cymbals. The signature series will be mounted on my current kit before I look to buy another.
With just the room mics, Sonors kick drum is a beast! Then with full mix you’d better hold on buddy. Tama’s Star kit is a anytime, anywhere, any style champion. DW is… well, DW. Gorgeous and is exactly what you would expect from DW, sounds good, looks good, plays good, did I say it’s a good kit? Thank you Shane for a treat for us drum nerds to drool over sweet dream kits. 🤤
Once again...great vid!!! Watched this vid maybe 50x already.. For me the only vids that give me, due to full mic/room and overheads, the clear understanding on how the drums really sound from diff perspectives! Sonorrrrrr....although I currently own a DW Collectors Maple and a Tama Star Walnut I'm in love with Sonor since my very first kit a Force3000 birch some 28 years ago. Hearing this kit I remember why..!!! Man... attack, full sound, articulation, roaring bass and floors and a clear sound (I really hate the OINGGGG on toms when not holding the keynote!). I the lower tuning that is...on the higher tuning (which I don't prefer) the Tama sounded best to me. But that leaves me to a point I hope could be a contribution to your vids... Since we as drummers have tuning devices now as well, why not give the tuning freq's from top and bottom heads? Would be a great addition on the vids (and learning steps for tuning in general for those in need of it..) I think!!
Damn those kits were incredible but I picked tama this time but they all were outstanding ..... Sonor used to be pinnacle of drum workmanship but tama is coming on strong with the star series...
I started back playing again ten years ago after a long time out. The first kit I got was a Sonor Delite and that thing sounded amazing... But, I'm really feelin those mahogany Tama's. They have that thunder and BOOM I love, so Star for the win here
My dream kit. Which I'm planning to get if certain events go to plan. Is a custom ordered Tama star maple. 6 Piece, might add to it over time. Emerald Sea Curly burst finish, sound focus ring inlays. 2 custom ordered snares with the Gloss Natural curly maple finish.
Wise choice of three intense dream kits. Every set sounds individually perfect! Balanced, concrete and absolutely warm! The only element stand out of the mix is the ride cymbal, which is too loud in my taste......
Man those Dee Dubs sound so good..🙌🏼 overall the best sounding kit in the video.. I’ve been A/B ing them for the past 20 mins lol amazing fundamental tones and punch with just the right amount of life. 👌🏼
LOVE IT !!!!!! How about 3 more Dream Kits from Yamaha, Pearl, and Ludwig. Don’t stop there though. Keep ‘ em coming. All About TAMA, but........ Drums Drums Drums !!!!!!!!!!
Y’all have one of the best sounding kits whether they’re entry or dream kits. Can you please share or do a video of your drum tuning, the mics used, and other equipment used to make them sound so awesome to the audio? I/we have to know!
I am not a fan of the look of the Sonor kit but man it sounds amazing, all 3 of them, but if I could pick one it would most certainly be the DW. That finish with the black nickel hardware is perfect.
Great comparison as always from DCP, fun, and so great to see my same kit sq2, just about (+8 tom), sadly only played for a few months before cyclical UK Lockdowns, still shielding my vulnerable other half, one day, soon, fingers crossed I can play it again :)
Sonor,Tama,DW, is my line up. The DW outer finish ply looks sloppy on the seams that I don't like on like Sonor and Tama there's look clean and sounds great, for my personal pick would be the Sonor SQ2 Heavy Beech its a Beast!!
30yrs go by & I'm still staying up late checking out drum kits
Living the dream Brian!
Try 50 years going by and even though I have 11 vintage kits I’m also up late checking out kits!,
Lol my eyelids are heavy. I see you Brian! Time for bed.
The Sonor kit is the one that makes my heart tick sound-wise! Such perfect balance between pure tone and bite in the attack.
i think that's mostly the single ply clears heads.
The only problem with the thicker shells is that you need a deeper shell to counter the pitch of the drum going up due to the shell thickness. Short of that, I'll pick the thicker shell any day of the week. Especially with recording.
Sonor, hands down. Nothing speaks with that perfect combination of attack, punch, warmth, and resonance of those thick German beech shells.
Agreed, just wish I could afford a Sonor kit. They’re actually my favorite drum manufacturers of all time. I love Sonor. Their the only drums with factory bearing edges that make sense. Beautiful sound.
That Sonor kit is what all drums aspire to be
Sonor without question is the sonic winner of this group. Outstanding German quality and engineering. außergewöhnlich!
Thank you thank you for including the SQ2 in this vid. Absolutely gorgeous! Heavy Beech sounds phenomenal!!
I'll take the Sonor please. What a beautiful set!
I couldn't stop watching the Sonor part of the video. The sound kept me engaged.
I think the Sonor won this battle.
It looks and sounds great.
The Tama came in a close second.
Great video guys 👍

The stock heads on the DW does them no justice.

The Tama & Dw sound great, but the Sonor sounds phenomenal. SQ2 has always been my dream kit
SQ2, Star, DW, in that order. Thanks for the video! 👍
That Sonor kit is the most interesting
The fact that you thought to add Ashley Schaeffer to your promo makes me a lifelong (what’s left of it) customer!

LOVE IT !!!!!! How about 3 more Dream Kits from Yamaha, Pearl, and Ludwig.
Don’t stop there though. Keep ‘ em coming. All About TAMA, but........
Drums Drums Drums !!!!!!!!!!
The Sonor's just sound amazing.
Excellent. Spectacular sound production too. 👏🏻🎶
I’m really digging both the SQ2 and the DW. They both sound wonderful, such tight clean sound. I’d go with the less expensive of the two. 😎
The Sonor Heavy Beech for me, hands down
The sound of floor tom sonor is so beautiful
Y’all have one of the best sounding kits whether they’re entry or dream kits. Can you please share or do a video of your drum tuning, the mics used, and other equipment used to make them sound so awesome to the audio? I/we have to know!
Thanks Jason! We may do this at some point. If you would like some info, you can email Tony: tony@drumcenternh.com
I am not a fan of the look of the Sonor kit but man it sounds amazing, all 3 of them, but if I could pick one it would most certainly be the DW. That finish with the black nickel hardware is perfect.
Beautiful drums and great videos, as always! Would you consider a video on micing drums? Your videos sound amazing!
It’s not sloppy that’s how the exotic wood ply looks, the grain doesn’t grow perfectly even they only painted the fade that’s it
Sonor was the best by far
